Awesome build! Can you talk through how you engineered the clamp vice ends? What components did you use to make them? (All thread, 2 nuts, welded to plate?) Is the box up top for weight in clamping down or just rigidity in vertical flex across the brake?

I designed it myself.

6.5' of 16 guage. Will bend thicker shorter sections.

The blade is 1/2" x 4. I had it cut the same as a cutting edge, the heat distorted. So me, a grinder, 2-7" wheels and some clean up spent half a day together cutting the edge down.

The real neat parts (handles, turn handles, gussets) I all designed in CAD and had plasma cut.

The table top is a piece of HP14x70 piling that we use in construction. The bows were scrap pieces I had lying around. The bolts are all 7/8" left over stuff from our bridge construction. The springs were from Fastenal, the highest rated size I could find. The hinges were 7/8" bolts from same place.

The member 2x6 is turned upright for strength, again this was leftover from something else I had.

That's as nice as any store bought brake I've seen in a while. Great job.You could sell those easily.

Well I tacked it together prior to welding. Most of the stuff was thick enough that warpage was not a large issue.

I did have a few areas that warped, I had to heat and cool them with a torch until I got them into an acceptable tolerance.

Built an axle rack on the back and put it on some casters.

So for anyone who has built one of these. Do you have any tips for getting the pivot points lined up perfectly?
