Honda 3.0 V6 method for stress free crank bolt R&R

My old MATCO 1769 (IR 2135) gun with a regular impact socket will not take off Honda crank bolts. On V6 Hondas this is no big deal because you can use a wedged breaker bar and the starter motor to break the bolt loose.

But on L4 Hondas the motor is turned 180 degrees so you can't use that method. I have done it using the gut-buster method (breaker bar with cheater) and I finally splurged for that Lisle socket. My experience mirrors yours--a few hits with the impact gun and any Honda crankshaft bolt is loose.

Marking the bolt and dampener with a pick punch is a good tip.

doesn't mean you have to buy it. im just saying that's what i'd use on a stubborn honda crank bolt.

FYI: When replacing a pinion seal on rear wheel drive vehicles I punch mark the end of the pinion and pinion nut, this way I can retighten to exact spot (you don't want to add any preload to old bearings) Over the years I have seen many customers who had pinion seal replaced experience bearing failures shortly thereafter, quite likely due to someone excessively gunning down the nut and the old bearings couldn't take it. The only exception is if prior to removing the pinion nut I detect some play in the bearings I'll tighten just a hair more to zero it out.

Never even knew they made a socket like that. My impact wouldn't budge it with a regular socket. After messing with it for what felt like forever my dad asked if I lubed up the impact. Added a few drops and of oil and she managed to break free.

I've always used a regular socket on my IR2135 on my Accords without a problem. You guys must have some really seized bolts.
