I forget how high mine is but you can see pics in the sig link.

I'd try to find something in your personal garage to set the height level of the stripe, top of workbench, bottom of upper cabinets, wall switches or the placement behind shop equipment.

10' off the floor. I forget how wide, I think 18". Just did it to break up the wall some. The interior walls are painted the same color as the exterior and the stripe ( and many other things ) are the same color as the roof. Just to be differant.

Here's mine. The top of the red strip is 42" from the floor. I chose this area as the receptacles were below it and the switches (of which 1 is visible and no, it's not crooked, the crappy cell phone lens has bent it like that) are above. I chose this location as I didn't want any slight deviation in my box height to be very obvious when the strip was added. Make sure you use the green "frogger" tape. It works well.

I painted my stripe 1/3 up the height from floor to ceiling - same placement as you would put chair rail molding. That placement supposedly makes the ceiling look higher than they are. Who knows. Obviously if you have really high ceilings that;s not a good rule to follow.

I painted my stripes on top of plywood. I took my time and got a good seal with the edge of the painters tape and it came out fairly good considering the texture of hte plywood wall. OSB may be a bit more rough of a texture, but painting the edge of the tape with the base color to seal the edge is the way to go there.

I used a laser level that I plunked in the center of the room. It's the type on a tripod that sends out a 360 degree beam. I ran my tape to that line top and bottom. Don't use measurements from floor or ceiling as they'll be off just a bit for sure and just a bit is really obvious to your eye. The laser level in my case was a quick and accurate way to go. I wouldn't do it any other way personally.

x2 on the laser level. I tried measuring at first and couldn't get the tape on straight. The laser makes it's 100 times easier. All you need is a cheap one and you can resell it when you're done.

I went just about 47" as the highest outlet was about 45". I started at the rear of the garage since there is a gradual slope down towards the door, and made it all level in reference to that.

The stripe is a whole other story :) Started with a 4" blue, then thought of adding some gray, then worked in some checkered flag, and finished with a thin black pinstripe.

Kewl thing is it's not paint, it's vinyl floor tape, (thanks to a member post on GJ) and can be pulled off fairly easily.

I didnt think Id like it but have to say it all ties in nicely. I'll get some pix up soon.

Yeah post up some pics. I was planning on doing something with checkered flag too, so I'd be curious to see how your stripes turned out.

That looks great! Where did you get the checkerboard pattern and is it all one piece with a blue stripe painted over it? Thanks for the pics :)

Actually no paint involved, they are all separate vinyl stripes. Middle 4" blue, 1" checker flag on each end, then 1" grays on each end of that. I actually finished it off with a 1/4" black pinstripe (after this pic)

I'm not one to "toot my own horn" and my custom projects usually come out OK, but this does look as good as it does in the pic, even up close. :bounce: Everyone who sees it thinks it's one piece.

Start http://www.identi-tape.com/vinylfour.htm This place has a huge selection. I used the floor marking tape.

Some other notes:
I did it mostly by myself, just needed a set of hands to help with the 4"
Took about 2 hrs to do my 22x24 - ish
Cost around 50 bux.

42" from Drywall on bottom. Tried somewhat centering on plug outlets, thermostat, garage door openers.

I used a two stripe scheme, different widths. Did that to hide the horizontal drywall seam.

A laser level would have been awesome for this. I had to do it old school - scribe the level lines with pencil then walk the blue tape.

I put a 6" red stripe 48" off the floor above a light grey bottom, a white top.

I know this is digging up an old thread, but I'm thinking about a stripe or stripes. I wondered if there's a certain type of laser level that's the way to go for something like this. Would a $100 budget work for a laser level for this task, or would I be better off renting a professional tripod setup for a day or two?

I used the HF laser. While not great. you can't beat the price and has worked fine for the couple times i have used it.

I used a Johnson laser level from Menards that was about $90. It came with a tripod and was excellent quality for the price. I chose to buy the one that made a vertical and horizontal laser rather than a 360° horizontal laser. I figured I'd find more future uses if it can do a vertical line as well. Since the laser didn't go a full 360°, I just rotated the laser on the tripod once I reached the end of the limits. It produced a long enough horizontal line to cover an entire wall. Menards also has 11% rebates right now IIRC.

By cheap you mean $50-$100... don't buy the $15-$20 black and decker ones because they aren't level when they say they are! I tried two different models of them and they were 3 degrees off. Over 20 feet it becomes noticeable.
