Horizonal Wall Stripe

I know this is digging up an old thread, but I'm thinking about a stripe or stripes. I wondered if there's a certain type of laser level that's the way to go for something like this. Would a $100 budget work for a laser level for this task, or would I be better off renting a professional tripod setup for a day or two?

You need a "chalkline" laser level. I bought a Dewalt DW087K for this purpose. It mounted to a standard camera tripod and made REALLY short work of installing my stripe (and the cabinets upstairs, BTW).
