Horizontal batts in pole garage

Hello All, hope everyone is staying safe. I built a 32 x 40 pole barn last year but had to get some hand surgery so never finished the inside yet. Was trying to come up with some ideas to insulate it myself to save some money. I don't want to spend the money for spray foam so looking at batts walls and a blown in ceiling. I saw this site for a place in Michigan about how they insulate their garages. I liked it because it looks like it would be easy to do myself.

http://jarvispolebarns.com/polebarn_with_attic/buchett.htm

They lay the batts horizontal and let its own weight keep the edges tight. I guess they just fasten it to the posts at the ends. Then they use 2 x 4 interior girts for the sheeting. Their picture shows metal sheeting but I thought of using osb for the first 4 feet then drywall after that. Maybe use 2 x 6 girts where I think I will install a wall cabinet or shelf. I'm no expert but think it is a good thing to have an air space on both the exterior and interior sides of the batts plus there is less contact of the posts to the interior sheeting to help reduce heat loss and noise. Just wonder if the batts might start to sag over time. Anyone do it this way before or see any problems?
Thanks

Most of the pole barn dealers can get big batts that will fill the whole space between the poles.

Yeah I have seen those from places like Morton. Just don't know yet how expensive they are and if I could hang them myself. The website I linked shows the builder in Michigan just uses 22" R19 that can be bought at any big box store and would be easy to install. Gotta have more air leakage though with all the horizontal seams but they also put 4 mil plastic over that.

I'm my opinion if you use 15 or 23" batts then there should be framing to attach the seams to.

I think it would be fine. The lack of vapor barrier correctly overlapped and secured was my only concern and the plastic would solve that issue. Their is there possibility that it could sag a little under its own weight over time and cause some gaping at the top though. You would probably never notice any appreciable loss in efficiency. It's an accepted practice to blow in insulation in walls and that settles over time so..... im not a fan of the way most pole barns are finished from a structural standpoint. Im a guy that hangs slot of heavy stuff from the walls and i prefer a vertical stud for that reason

Easiest way doing this alone is the large rolls. I put mine up by myself. This is 8' wide rolls that I hung horizontal. Stapled at the top and sides.

Thanks for the replies! I'll have to check out pricing for the different type of insulation and also if there will be delivery or pickup issues with the quarantine in effect. I checked out your build thread kj mustang, that is an impressive building you have there.
Stay safe everyone!

I got mine from a local building supply company that also builds pole buildings. Check your area for Agricultural Supply companies or pole building companies. If you google search, 8 foot roll insulation, you will find some online vendors but I am sure shipping will be high.

For not that much more material, you could flip those girts around and frame out the walls on 24" centers and just install the insulation in the normal vertical orientation.

FBI building sells their 55' long 93" wide 6" thick unfaced batts for $222. Our local pole barn metal supplier was selling the same exact stuff for $325 a roll. Went with the stuff from FBI and drove a couple hours to pick it up from them.

As to hanging it yourself, it can be done. It's no fun however. Make sure to put in some hanger nails to help hold it up. Also works easier if you roll the section your putting in back up and unroll it as you hang it from top down.

Sounds great. What is FBI and what location(city/state) are you referencing as local?

My pole building was done with the horizontal bats as you described. I thing your pole spacing has something to do with it. Mine were 6' and the bats fit perfect. Goodon did the work and they do a ton of buildings that way. I was suspect of it as well at first.

Also, check with residential insulation companies to see where they get their supplies. All the new construction homes with unfinished basements in my area are insulated with 4' wide plastic faced rolled fiberglass that they hang horizontal.

In the Jarvis pictures they are using 4 mil vapor barrier over faced insulation. I thought you didn't need a vapor barrier with faced insulation?
