I wanted to carry a 10 pound fire extinguisher in my truck, and with my cover, there wasn't enough room to fit it vertically, so I built this horizontal mounting bracket.

It is a pretty simple thing, but I am quite pleased with it. I welded some 1" x 1/2" x 1/8" C channel into a T shape (barely visible below the strap). Then I cut about 1" off a piece of 5" schedule 40 steel pipe, and cut that in half for the two arms and welded them to the ends. After powder coating, I lined the two arms with a thin piece of rubber.

To secure the extinguisher, I bolted a piece of 1" 22 gauge stainless to the bracket, and riveted an adjustable tension latch to the ends. I used 1/4-20 bolts into rivnuts to hold it to the side of the bed.

Here is is all loaded and ready to go.

It was a pretty simple project compared to what many of you do, but I have been real happy with it.

not sure if you are suppose to store them on their sides, You might check with a Extinguisher place that works on them.
I would be afraid that the powder would harden over the valve.
Don't know but worth checking with an tech.

I ran one horizontal in my off road car for years. All of our construction equipment has them mounted sideways. It isnt uncommon to see guys with them bolted to floor pans, mounted to roll bars, ect; all not vertical.

Your comment caused me to dig a little deeper and this is what i found.

Seems as though a fire department storing them horizontally had issues with failures and i am assuming they use theirs more often than i used mine.

Personally I have never had an issue; Being that it is an off road car nothing really has time to "settle". n.

I think it falls in the category of "It works, but is not recommended."

It looks like a great creation. Is there clearance under the band so the two hex head bolts in the center don't rub on the OD of the extinguisher? I can see you have the foam/rubber there but I can't tell the height stackup. I would think it could be a bad day if it happened to contact and eventually rub thru due to vibration...

Duckface,
I haven't taken the time yet to work on it. I had a batch of large sign stands I built for church that I had powder coated and I added that in with them.

Matt,
I didn't think about that, but yes, there is almost 1/4" clearance between the extinguisher and the bolt heads (I just went out and checked).

Fire safety is one of my primary concerns in and around my garage. In my 20x20 garage, I have a 10 pound ABC extinguisher, a 2.5 gallon Stored Pressure Water Fire Extinguisher, and a 5 pound CO2 extinguisher. I have two other 10 pound ABC's in the back yard. Even though I am not a commercial operation, I do get all my extinguishers checked annually and refilled/tested as needed. When I NEED one, I want it handy and I want it to work.

I was deeply impressed with this thread a few years back. I replaced all of our disposable fire extinguishers with good Amerex or Ansul units.

Horizontal is fine

We have 30+ municipal vehicles with the extinguishers mounted horizontal

All of our trucks have them horizontal at work. I prefer mine to be vertical because its easier for me to grab when needed. In my work truck is is bolted to the center consel on the passenger side. It has a side benefit of no one wanting to ride with you.

Sideways is fine. We carry them on our trucks at work. I work as a firefighter and a few of our trucks have them stored that way. Just turn it upside and hit it on the bottom with a rubber mallet. This fluffs the powder so it does not settle.

Wish I'd seen this sooner. I recently made some vertical hangers for a few of mine and it may have been a space advantage to go horizontal.
Now this is going to haunt me for a while but nice job anyway!
