I have harbor freight's $30 ($24 with a 20% off coupon) 18-gauge brad nailer, and it works really well--if you just want something like that instead of a whole set.

For the current price - I can't recommend the 56" wide rol cabinet. It's not as well built. Total load capacity for the 56" is 1900 or so lbs - Total Load capacity for the 44" is 2900 or so lbs.
FWIW,
Carl B.

First, none of this is directed at Carl B (quoted above). I have been wrestling with this comparison myself and researching this information, and I've found out that - while the weight numbers quoted above ARE what HF publishes - it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. IN FACT, IT'S DOWNRIGHT MISLEADING!

I compared the boxes in the store, and it just didn't seem right. Well, it turns out that the 2900 lb rating for the 13 drawer box includes an allowance for 1473 pounds on the top of the cabinet, while the 56" cabinet has no weight allowance listed for the top at all. This makes an "at-a-glance" comparison impossible.

I decided that the only fair comparison is to add up the weight capacity of each drawer...which I did. (If you'd like to research this on your own, simply download the manuals for each cabinet. All of the drawer weight info is in there. Also, I have used their alphabetical drawer designation, so if you want to know which drawer is which, well - download the manual.:)

So, without further ado, here is the accurate comparison:

44" 13 Drawer Cabinet
Drawer Qty Lbs Total
Drawer A 5 88 440
Drawer B 1 110 110
Drawer C 5 88 440
Drawer D 1 110 110
Drawer E 1 121 121
Total weight for all drawers - 1221 pounds

56" 11 Drawer Cabinet
Drawer Qty Lbs Total
Drawer A 1 220 220
Drawer B 2 154 308
Drawer C 1 154 154
Drawer D 1 220 220
Drawer E 1 220 220
Drawer F 1 154 154
Drawer G 2 154 308
Drawer H 1 154 154
Drawer I 1 220 220
Total weight for all drawers - 1958 pounds

What this says is that not only is the 56" cabinet capable of holding more weight, if you compare the two box sizes (44" to 56") the 56" cabinet is proportionally MUCH stronger. So much for that myth...

Obviously, weight will likely not be the ONLY consideration for most potential purchasers. Cabinet width, number of drawers, available accessories, and type of finish all come to mind. But if this comparison has helped you, I'd really appreciate if you'd please post a note here!

^ I did the same thing today actually lol

only thing I can think of is the smaller unit is rated higher because you can add the top box and the side boxes. So it must be accepting of the extra weight, idk maybe has better casters or something.

Gauge of the steel looks the same but I did not go out there with my micrometer so it just by eying it.
Paint job is better on the larger unit and the ball bearing sliders seem the same.

Im torn too in my discussion on what to get. If you buy the side adder with extra drawers its the same length as the larger unit I think and its 50 bux cheaper.

I know I know there is a whole thread on this box :)

I posted this in a separate thread, but...

Yost 204 vise for $130
Yost 205 vise for $170
Yost 206 vise for $300

http://www.waltcotoolsinc.com/closeouts.aspx?page=2

These are fantastic prices for these 60,000 PSI ductile iron US-made vises. Get 'em while you can. Watch out for the shipping, it defaults to overnight which is VERY expensive. Select UPS Ground, which is very reasonable.

I called Yost to get some info on this series and the guy was speechless when he heard the prices. I was tempted by the 8" but ended up with a 6" which I probably don't need but couldn't pass it up. Thanks for the lead.

Yeah, but you can buy two of the smaller cabinets for the same money as one larger cabinet. Then the math becomes 2442 lbs. > 1958 lbs.

Yep - and I'm seriously considering doing exactly that. Decisions, decisions...

Given that Yost wants $520 for the 204, $712 for the 205 and $1035 for the 206 on their Amazon store... he was probably as speechless as I was when I saw them. I can only assume that Waltco really needed to get rid of them to make room for something else. I was even more speechless when they were still listed a week later.

If you don't need the 206, you could always sell it to someone here. Hmm, it'd make a heck of a Secret Santa gift! :)

Glad you and others got one before they all disappeared.

Agreed - decisions, decisions

First and foremost - get what you really want. Don't let statistics alone drive your decision. For that matter don't let price alone drive your decision. A large nice tool cabinet is a luxury not a necessity for most of us homeowners.

I think the bottom line for you might be - if you really like the shinny red finish and the longer initial size of the 56" - and that offers as much or more storage capacity than you need - then buy that one. I'm sure it is more than strong enough for any hobbyist / homeowner.

If you want the best bang for the bucks - then one fully equpped 44 - or two basic 44's offer far more bang for the bucks.

FWIW,
Carl B.

Sears is having 10% off all tools this weekend, in store and online. 20% off all garage storage, which includes tool boxes. They have a lot of good stuff on sale, too (check local ad) and the 10% is added to that.

For anyone looking for current Advanced Auto coupon codes, they keep an updated thread over at Fat Wallet:

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1023879/

Also, if you use Fat Wallet's Cash Back Shopping (free), you will receive an additional 6% cash back off of your order.

http://www.fatwallet.com/cash-back-shopping/

Advanced Auto carries SK tools online.

I believe any order over $75.00 receives free shipping as well.

So, for example: BIG30 coupon code ($30 off $75) will save you 40%. Add the Fat Wallet cash back for a total of 46% off. On top of that you get free shipping. Not too bad...

Sears has a $5 off $25 and $15 off $100 coupon in their ad this week... much sweeter than the usual $5/$50 coupon.

BTC5 and BTC15 respectively for online code.

I guess I missed the big discount at Sears, kind of on the fence for the C3 impact which I don't need, but would have batteries so I would feel better about getting the inflator.

I don't mind missing it, good to have stuff I am still on the hunt for.

Thanks SQ. I just pulled the trigger on the box. I also got a Carhart jacket for $25 since it did not add to the shipping cost. The shipping was $85 for me. FWIW another site that had more details about this box stated the country of origin as the United States and also stated it had roller bearing guides. Mine is on back-order so I have my fingers crossed.

Just got off the phone with AW Direct and the toolbox is no longer available.

From Dealnews:

Green Earth Technologies offers its G-OIL 5W-30 Bio-Based Synthetic "Green" Motor Oil 5-Quart Bottle for $0 after this mail-in rebate. (This rebate will credit up to $26 of your purchase.) That's $26 off and tied with our mention from June as the best deal we've seen for this "green" oil, which features the highest biodegradability rating available. Note that G-OIL is frequently carried by Walmart. Rebate expires September 9.

FWIW, When I printed the rebate form it gave 9/17/11 as the deadline for purchases.

Sunday 5 til midnight I think it hit close to 30% all stacked.

I think what kept me from pulling the trigger on a C3 impact kit was that the web page would not show what items were in the kit, how many batteries, which charger, etc. Plus its something I have no fear of buying used or as a refurb.

I bought that C3 Impact wrench after a poster (was it you, grease monkey?) praised it in another topic. Needed one for one thing on my car, but as always, I'll probably use it more than whatever tools I have now :)
