I was trying to be polite. Wood is measured for hardness on the Jankra scale. Rubberwood is 950 and so is cherry. Eastern cedar is 900, while birch is 910. Would you make a bench of birch or cedar? Not me. I couldn't afford cherry ;-(

Maybe this will help, white oak is 1290.

Rubberwood is soft, if you use rubberwood for a bench and you drop heavy things on it, it will dent, it will scratch. This is why rubberwood is not used for floors. If you use your bench for very light use it will work, but if that is the case use plywood or MDO, its a even better deal. Point is we can discuss the various points of tools all day but the durability of wood is as set in stone as the hardness of diamonds.

I'm familiar with the hardness scale, and I understand where rubberwood is soft and less durable than a hardwood, you're not the only one with this information. The internet is a beautiful thing...

What you're failing to understand is that workbenchs are used for different things for different people. Not everyone needs, or even wants the hardest wood for their bench. If hardness were the only desireable attribute, then everyone would simply use stainless steel for their bench.

Softer wood is excellent for working with metal parts that are easy to scrach/scuff.

Rubberwood's attributes are that it sands easily, is easy to work with, and it's CHEAP. IE, if you stain it, drop something on it, crack it, it's easy/cheap to repair/replace, and you won't feel bad that you're tossing a hardwood piece.

Plywood and pressboards are great, but the minute you get them wet, they're not only ruined, they're warped and can flake apart leaving contaminants on your workpiece.

Craftsman 299 pc. Easy Read Socket Set.
$299.99

Use Realjoy code for free shipping

Oh ****! All the other deals were pretty easy to hide from the wife. How am I going to hide 51 lbs of sockets? She is a stay at home mom so knows when UPS drops stuff off. I can see it now. She goes to pick it up from outside and can't lift it. That will be a nice WTF when I get home. Oh well, in for a set. I hate you guys! How I need to find a deal on Hanson trays or something similar.

Anyone happen to have purchased more than one of the SK Flex ratchets that wants to sell their extra?

I just found this forum a few days ago and already caught the bug. I spent $190 on Wiha's webiste yesterday...

I'm looking for a nice set of sockets/rachets to go in my box. I have my toss around set from Craftsman, but want a nicer set that stays at home. Any suggestions or deals going on?

Sears Update: Buy right angle driver, get 12v drill free.

I got my deal on the right angle driver plus free drill honored last night. But it took 2 associates and 3 managers to make it all work - and in the end I had to re-order online from the store kiosk. This was not a website problem but an issue with the "boots on the ground" who say they didn't know the driver was in stock (There was a pile of 80 of them 15ft from the tool/garden entrance marked $99).

So, summary I got my deal but not without some persistence.

Accutire Digital Tire Gauge with LCD Display, showing as $8.49, http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02823001000P
Those are pretty nice, I have some of the older style with the red readout, still going strong after about 4 years.

Nice deal on the Craftsman deep offset wrench set, I almost paid full price for that last week, it's going to be hard to resist now!

The 299pc Craftsman socket set is tempting too. I've been wanting a complete set of the laser etched sockets. I would think the people who like to buy sets and them break them up to sell on eBay would like this set. Nooo....muusttt..rressiistttt...

Steve check out UPS My Choice! If it works you can reroute the package to somewhere more convenient, like a friend's house or work.

franken-box = two craftsman cabs and boxes welded into one unit.

Happy Holidays ...thought I'd post a quick special we created for the members here. We are just submitting paperwork to Ryan this morning to sponsor the GJ site starting in January, and offer specials through the Alliance Program as well. We thought we'd share the love a bit (get it "bit") before the holidays and offer up a few Wera promotions - first one in this post.

We are a Wera authorized distributor, including warranty, and will have three other related lines to be announced in early 2012. For now you can purchase Wera tools from our current site, www.bdent.com, which is directed at electronic manufacturing and repair. As a FYI, we have two new sites that are launching in January. The current site works fine, but the look and feel does not work in today's e-commerce world and we wanted a separate entity to promote tools and automotive specialty products. You'll see something new in the posts come 2012. For now though, we put together a package here:

Special Wera 1/4" Ratchet Set & #2 Laser Tip Bundle

This includes a 1/4" Micro Bit Holding Ratchet with 28 Bits & Case and a FREE Kraftform 350 PH#2 4" Lasertip Screwdriver and FREE USPS Priority shipping for under $59. Retail would be almost $105.00.

We do sell on Amazon and eBay for some items, but would rather see the members here do even better, since you're a more focused audience for tools and we can pass the savings from not paying eBay and Amazon fees over to you. If you ever have an issue with a Wera tool, don't hesitate to contact us, we'll help process your warranty and get you a replacement ASAP - other than bits which are not warrantied.

Glad to be aboard.

Craftsman 18pc Full Polish Wrench set $61.29, use code REALWISH or SEARS5OFF50. Free in-store pickup or free shipping on $99+.

I don't know if these are USA or imports. There's a chance that they're still USA since these module sets are special bundles that don't sell as well as the separate sets.

As someone may have already mentioned, the 12pc offset wrench set is also on sale, for $64.79 before coupon.

REALWISH gives $5 off $50, but upgrades to $10 off $100 and free shipping on $99+. I believe it ends tonight.

It works well, never really considered it to a work address... they allow that?

I've done that in the past with no issues, but depending on where you work it could take an extra day or two to get to you. When I got the delivery email notices I would just go to shipping (huge place - 10 min walk) and pick my stuff up so I didnt have to wait for it to get sorted on site and delivered to my area by the facilities peeps.

Portland, yeah, that one.
Searched the thread and doesn't look like this one was posted yet -- Dickies has 70% off all clearance items. You have to click the items to see the clearance price. Free shipping for orders over $50.00 too.

Link to clearance: http://www.dickies.com/sale.jsp?partner=k111512&link=Primary&creative=Text
Link to Men's clearance directly: http://www.dickies.com/sale/clearance/mens-clothing.jsp

Might also try coupon code "GAN30" for an additional 30% off the entire order. I did that last night and it worked along with the 70% off clearance pricing. Got about $300 retail worth of stuff for $54.00 shipped. Tried the "GAN30" code this morning though to test to see if it was still working and it's not coming up now. 70% off clearance stuff is still pretty dang good on its own too though.

I guess neither one of you are familiar with Wera?

I am not. My top of the line tools are Craftsman at best. This other stuff is not worth the money wanted.

I'll spend the money to get Milwaukee brand power tools .... but I will not "waste" the extra dollars for an "exclusive name brand" hand tool.

It's a work bench. If you're not staining it, denting it, or otherwise abusing it, you're not really working on it.

Lets keep this in perspective. This isn't find furniture here. It's a cheap replaceable surface that lets you get your work done on it.

I have 2 8ft butcher block counters for a work surface in my garage. They're oak and they're not end grain. They've held up excellent so far, but I don't particularly care if they end up dented. If it gets bad enough that I need to replace them, they're $200 a slab from ikea. $100 if I go with the cheapest ones they have (the ones I would have gotten in the first place, but they were out of stock when I was buying).

I respect that. Please consider not trashing any tools in the HOT DEAL thread (unless you are relating negative experiences others might want to know about). Feel free to start new or join existing discussion threads, however - we openly encourage ornery free speech around here - just not in this thread.

Im under the impression they can ship it to store for free for instore pick-up on non stocked items. Usualy takes longer than standard shipping, as its getting routed on tractor trailers.

I have a wera screwdriver. It was my worst investment ever.
Its not worth more than $3 dollars, but it costs me $30. I don't want to spend a penny on wera any more.

1. Welcome!
2. Please note that "Hot Deals" was created as a place for member-found and shared deals, and not as a place where resellers advertise their own deals.
3. $105 retail price? Where? Chadstoolbox sells the same set for $57.30. Plus $6.42 for the driver and $9 shipping is almost $73. Your price of $59 shipped is a bit better, but Chads might price-match if asked.

I would recommend you seek permission to start a separate thread, called BDENT deals, or similar.

Thanks for the welcome Stuey, no worries, I had a few members tell me to post myself..but I can see how this thread is promoted, good idea to move it. We'll work wherever you guys need us to. Regarding retail price, we were going off of today's MSRP for the products and where they are listed on Amazon at the moment. Again no worries, if Chad's or anyone else wants to price match, we are sure to follow suit if we need to for other deals down the line, it was just an opening post to help support the forum - ours does include a #2 4" Phillips as well. For those who've had some issues or are quick to judge manufacturers or suppliers we (I) understand that as well. After working in the automotive industry for 12+ years and building two homes over 30+ years, I'd be lying if I said I didn't buy a brand again that failed once, or even twice...if I did I'd have very few tools in my tool box. Wera is not the end-all-save-all of drivers, but they are by no means the worst either. Glad to be here none the less.

I'll ask to get this moved to a different thread for the time being.

Gotta respond back regarding my high opinion of the Milwaukee brand. Up here in upstate NY we had an eight foot deep flood wash through our valley and village. Several folks I know lost many of their tools. One point worth mentioning is that the Milwaukee brand survived the flood much more often than did other name brands.

Apparently they have sealed bearings and better motors internally both on the corded and uncorded tools.

I'm not the boss, Ryan's the boss. If he gives you the OK to post deals here, then it's all good.

It may even be a good idea to start a separate thread for other reasons, to introduce yourself (again), mention your warranty policy, and perhaps as a place to mention regular deals/sales.

For what it's worth, there are a lot of Wera fans on the forum, myself included. And I bought that bit-ratchet and bit set for maybe $60-65 on Sears a few months ago. I <3 it, but tend to underuse it. $59 plus a free driver and free shipping is a good deal in my book.

As for those that are calling the Wera tools overprices or ****, give them time. GJ has been known to influence and convert a lot of people.

There's a new system where you can "start a return" online. Haven't used it yet.

You can sometimes return items that are purchased online and shipped to your home. I've done it a few times, and usually have to be taken to a back HR office where they can do such things.

You could also try chatting with or emailing customer service to see if they can set you up with a free shipping label.

Craftsman 299 pc. Easy Read Socket Set.
$299.99

Use Realjoy code for free shipping

I bought this set about 10 years ago. I would like to get another, but when I was last at Sears (yesterday) and scrutinized the socket quality, I was not impressed. The insides were rough and unfinished. What do you guys think about the current run of CM sockets? I don't have any of the laser-etched flavor. Would I be better off going with SK (probably the next most reasonable)? Seems like even Armstrong (appear identical) and Wright and Proto are significantly higher. Aside from the money, the only problem is you don't get the nice large set you get with the Craftsman sockets; I'd have to build up the set piecemeal.

Many many threads on here about this.

The basic run down I found here was
• The insides of many sockets from many brands (no specific breakdown of all sockets) are painted.
• Nickel plated. This may or may not be a problem. Personally, I haven't found an issue with my circa 2004 Cman sockets.
• Fastener fit is comparable to better socket brands. Pipsters actually found it was tighter with Cman.
• Quality control is a bit loose, and you'll find some doubles or some missing sockets and some with chipped chrome. This appears to be resolved with a phone call. You'll get replacements.

Overall, my weak assessment seems to be that this represents a good USA made value if you need a big assed socket set. If you use them hard, chances are that you use a small portion of these with a high frequency of use. You could end up replacing those particular sizes, but the wide variety and large number here will offer you that low use socket you need to get a less common job done. In other words, replace the most commonly used ones with a 'better' brand if you like, all the low use sockets will see less wear, but will come in handy when you actually need it. It would be expensive to buy all these low use sizes in a truck tool brand. When you actually need to use that oddball socket, its there for you.

Many items are online exclusive. My local Sear(s)(theres 2 within 4 miles at my house and 2 within 5 miles of work). The Manager of the tool section at my favorite store said he could get just about get anything shipped to his store for free. I brought this up because they no longer have paper tool catalogs. Its switching to online only. He keeps the tool section in order like my old army foot locker from back in basic. He said he could do it for me, but results will vary at minimum wage at your store.

I buy "online only" stuff from "online" by calling the "online" telephone number. I have stuff shipped to different stores all the time. Homedepot gives a 10% military discount over the phone(for online orders) without ever seeing my valid military id.
