How dirty do you get?

Went into work today to fix some stuff while production wasn't running and do some PM's.

Tore apart a metal part handling conveyor to tighten it up as it was rubbing on an electric conduit below. Dropped a quarter inch bolt, chased it down it ended up 15 feet away thanks to kicking it as it fell. Bent down to pick it up and didn't realize I had moved under the robot tooling to get it and when I stood up smacked my head. Scratched it up more from an abrasion but didn't cut or crack it open. Wife said it looks like a cat scratch, bled about as much as one but there was a tiny bit. Nice goose egg though. That'll teach me to be aware of where I am.

Then changed out a faulty resistance welding coolant chiller. Nothing like a nice bath of dowtherm.

Then the best was cleaning smoke eater ductwork!

See here how the robotic weld cells have hoods that funnel up the smoke. There are spark arrestors in the hoods to keep any errant spark from catching the paper filters in the smoke eater on fire. The smoke eater is the large blue box on the left. 3 cells all funnel into that unit. Cleaning the spark arrestors isn't bad as you just slide them out, throw them on the floor and knock them around a few times to get the collected dust out, then clean up the mess.

The bad part is sweeping out all that 14 inch duct work from inside the weld cells with a chimney sweep.

Here is how I looked after the first one, I had 3 sets to do today.

Different units are scheduled at different times and every unit in the plant gets done every 6 months. I only do this on Saturdays so time and a half is worth getting that filthy! LOL

So how dirty do you get on your job?

I work on a fair amount of kitchen equipment. I don't let it in the shop until my guy sterilizes it.
I gave up getting dirty(greasy) about 15 years ago.

When I told everyone I was going to work at the foundry as a mechanic, first thing they said how dirty I would get. Honestly it isn't any worse then my old jobs. At least here I don't have to wade threw cow **** to work on a busted machine in the middle of a barn yard any more. If I wanted to, I could come home sparkling clean everyday since we have showers here. I'm the weird one here thou because I don't want to take a communal shower with everybody eles.

Been known to wear the white suits with the hoods as well. I get into some pretty toxic stuff now and then, and I wear the appropriate equipment. Don't want it in my truck, don't want to breathe it or eat it.

Think about it.

I had one on, but you knock **** down on your face as you are under it and it ends up everywhere. Then you take it off and even more ends up on your face.

And one of these, if you are hitting your head and seeing stars. That's called a concussion, brotha'

I used to say "Safety First!" facetiously as stupid teenager me did some "Here, hold my beer" stupid stunt. Now that I work in manufacturing, "Safety First!" is life and death serious.

The bump and blood could possibly be a reportable injury. The lack of respritory protection will probably get osha's attention. Sometimes the innerwebs aint your friend. You gotta be careful what you post nowdays. The pics of the floor can be used to find out where this occurred and they can come see you!!
our State parks and wildlife folks have been ticketing the hell out of guys postin illegal catches on websites. pictures are evidence.

The real question is: How do you guys stay so clean?

I seem to be able to turn any job into a dirty job.

I said I was wearing a mask... And the bleed a little was a scratch, and a bump, let's not be overly dramatic. Not even close to reportable. There is no concussion and seeing stars was just an expression. What I did was akin to bending over to pick a spoon up off the floor and hitting my head on the table when I got done. It was nothing anyone here would wear a hard hat for.

The dirt all over me is not from air borne dust, it is from **** falling on me in one shot. Took a face full as I started as I was dumb and standing directly under my brush. I would not look that bad if that hadn't happened. Big difference there. I am not breathing anything in even if I wasn't wearing a mask. I also have a full beard so the area around my mouth isn't as dirty as it looks. I sweat under the mast too and when I pulled it off then put my hat back on and all the junk fell off it and stuck to the sweat.

But hey, thanks holier than though crew for ruining a fun thread. I used LOTO today which is the number one safety thing anywhere, surprised you didn't rake me over the coals for not saying I did before hand...

As for OSHA... this is the largest employer in the county. OSHA makes monthly unannounced stops regardless. We have not been wrote up for anything in my 15 years there.

My stupid self got brake dust on my jacket sleeve, dark blue jacket so I didn't see it. Then my eye itched, I try not to wipe my face with my hands so I used the cuff of my jacket and this was the result.
Not every day is this bad; in fact one this bad is rare.

:willy_nil Maybe you should quit while your ahead.

Really you need more training if you think your using PPE correctly and still have all that on your face. Falling debris and airborne contaminats are one in the same . Welding dust has some really nasty contaminats in it...Its your lungs, breath deep and take it all in. Lung cancer is fun, I know, my mother died from it in 07.

Its your life. I'm out.

I smoke a pack a day, rant about that too.

I have worked in a weld shop my entire adult life. It isn't like it's going to make a difference when I take a face full of dirt.

i'll get filthy from a damned oil change...and don't get me started on trans services...

chrysler hasn't used real gaskets in over a decade...so, getting the silicon to let loose on the pans can be a ***** most of the time...and i usually wind up with trans fluid all over me when i pop the pan off a bit and it splashes on me...**** that ****...

the only thing i do that i get dirty during and like is injector jobs...i don't know why either...i swear my hands are permanently stained black...i can do nothing all day and have black come out of my hands somehow

I get dirtier at home than I do at work... At work I sit behind a desk and stare at a computer screen all day. Sometimes I get to go out to a project site... Then I may get a little mud on my boots...

I work on databases. I spilled coffee on my self once. Was just a small amount so it really did not stain.

Unless spaghetti at lunch counts, then I usually get something on my tie.

dudes taking selfies hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahaha.

I'm with ya!

But seriously, I do know the selfie is the best way to show it....it's just that when I get like that, getting clean is bigger priority than grabbing a camera (which I don't keep handy in dirty jobs and I don't own a phone).

Working on equipment, I have 2 mechanics working with / for me in the shop -- "Pig-Pen 1" and "Pig Pen 2" I sometimes call them -- they can come out of a 10 minute job looking like they rolled in a dumpster full of grease / oil / mud. I don't stay perfectly clean, but rarely get much of the black-face-mechanic look in full day of pushing hard to get stuff done. Usually just that one itchy eye smudge kinda thing. Usually get dirtier on welding and fab jobs where I get the overall coating in grinding dust and "welders tan" when I'm in too much of hurry to put leathers on.

I rarely get dirty and almost never get grease on myself. I could reman a diesel engine for a week in a white suit and still look ok.

Not that dirty unless I'm doing a lot of rotates and hugging tires. Get way more dirty working at Indy shops.

There's a chrome plating guy I use who has a single bay enclosed tiny shop with about 5 guys constantly polishing metal. It's clearly not OSHA approved due to no ventilation and the lack of PPE. I feel sorry for these poor guys, they look like they've been thrown down a mile-long chimney. There's no way they ever get that compound/metal out of their pores.
