How do you label your impact sockets?

I don't have a socket rail. I keep my 12mm to 22mm impact deep sockets in a small box. I'd like to paint the numbers on the side. Or get stickers. They aren't used that often, so not worried about numbers wearing off. How do you label your impact sockets?

I used paint marker. Cleaned with some Alcohol first. Surprisingly last... I thought it would start getting rubbed off, but no.

I rely on my socket rails to keep my impact sockets organized. I don't see the labels lasting a long time if they get wet or covered in oil. If I were to label them, I would try some sort of etching if there aren't already any easy to see marks on it.

Are the sockets stamped, or etched with the markings? If they're deeply stamped, you could simply fill the stampings with paint to make them more visible.

Socket rail or blow molded case. (I have both). They make it easy to quickly grab what you need based on feel.i hardly ever have to look at what I'm grabbing as I know where it is on the rail, or in the case for the longer ones. This comes in handy if you're under a car trying to get another socket.

On a socket rail, or in a tray, some of them came with sizes etched into them. sometimes I ethch the size on the side with an engraver. Have also numbered with a paint stick

The manufacturer did it for me. Mine are all stamped with the size.

That works for me, and I line them up in order on a rail to keep things neat and in order.

in my two boxes at home and the shop, I keep on rails, in ascending order from left to right. Pretty easy to tell the size when they are laid out this way from just an eyeball

On my service truck that I made drawers for, I couldn't keep them in place, so I made a tray for them. I took green paint marker and filled in the letters.

well after about 2 months of normal use, the paint marker was no longer visible. but if you are just a home gamer not using them 10X a day, it might last a bit.

A lot of mine have been highlighted with a paint pen for quick clarity but ya otherwise they are stored on posts or back in their respective cases

I have at least four bottles... black, yellow, red, florescent green, glitter red, white.

I was bored today and finally did something so I could read mine.

Beer and some Brake Kleen, then the paint pen and into the sun to cure a bit. Then I cleaned the excess off with a wire wheel on a bench grinder. I hit the socket with the front side of the wheel so the bristles didn't dig into the paint in the stamping. I'm happy with the results.

I was gonna use my gunsight paint but I think I loaned it out and never got it back. I might try some red fingernail polish on my chrome sockets. I assume red will show up best on chrome.


I just looked on WallyWorld and the cheapest fingernail polish is $4 and not a buck. OK, it's a buck at the dollar stores...Should I buy my lipstick there too?

I get my nail polish in the clearance bin at Walmart or the Dollar store. Chrome... I use black or glitter red.

I don't recommend the lipstick at the dollar store. It puts you on a "list" where you won't be allowed to drive past schools.

The paint from "Uni" oil paint markers or any other "engine marker" holds up on them pretty well. Those markers are great for marking parts, etc. and last a long time if you keep the cap tight on them.

Some of mine have great big numbers stamped in them. Others have little numbers.
They go in separate rails lying on their sides in shallow drawers, size stampings facing up.

I can just tell which size is which by looking at the most worn sockets on the rail, this is just how it is with tools that you use all the time, I have never had size labels on anything in 35 years.
