At work many of the hydraulic filters have debris magnets in them. About 3.5 in by .25 in. I'll either put them in the drawer on top of the drawer liner or stick the magnet on the underside of the drawer. I don't have a pic, but magnets keep 'em from rolling around and getting lost.

I have a drawer with 3 socket rails. 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2. Easy access and they dont move. Boxed socket sets have their own extensions that go with the set if I have to work on site

I keep most of mine in one of these organizers (the one with the wrenches in this pic). My longer extensions hang out in my ratchet drawer. The 3/4" drive extensions are in their own box with the rest of the 3/4" drive set as they are rarely used. I have a fairly complete set, but I don't have multiples of the same drive and length, so they are easy to organize.

I'm almost ashamed to post this...:(

Some of these extension collections are...

So...:)

Much...:bounce:

Bigger...:lol_hitti

Just bought the Tekton Wobble Extension Set, so there will have to be some rearranging in the future...

However, I can't see me needing any more after those...

Is this "organized chaos"

Don't lie now, how many of those extensions do you actually use? Don't you have a go to extension in each drawer that you subconsciously reach for?

Very nice collection though. I might be a bit jealous...

I have a 3 section plastic ERNST organizer that I put 1/4 , 3/8 and 1/2 stencils on and put them all in there.

I have 2 or 3 other extensions that are longer than the organizer. I just lay them in the drawer between things

what do you guys think about using magnetic drawer liners to keep things from rolling?

if you could get a strong enough magnet.

The problem is I try to get nice quality.... Most of those in that drawer are toptul, koken and a bunch mixed matched sk/craftsman/proto/plomb/wera and other stuff. I always joke about selling all my name brand stuff and buying just toptul or something like that and I could get a lot more bang for my buck, but I like quality over quantity.

When I first saw the pictures, I thought that those guys were crazy, but then I started thinking about things and I am not so sure they are crazy. If you were to have a "complete" set you would need sizes in 1/4", 3/8". 1/2" and in my case 3/4" and 1". Then you have to decide what lengths are important so you have up to 12" so that would be like 6 sizes, then the longer ones 18", 24", and 36" now we are up to 9 sizes. Then you have wobble and regular, so that is 18 per drive size, then locking, and any other type of specialty ones. It would be easy to get carried away.

Someone could put all those together and work on a car in the garage, from their living room.

I guess that's how they justify the cost of a tool-box that takes up a lot of valuable real estate in a shop. In all honesty, looks like a lot of wasted space, when three or four of each size drive, would handle most tasks. To each their own.

It helped that my drawers are 28" deep. My old tool box was a mess.
If they are loose in the drawer, you need more.
I have that many more at home. This is my box at work.

I forgot about this thread but I was doing some work in the garage and snapped a picture. These are the HF trays I mentioned before:

I have them loosely organized by length and drive size.

I can understand a chrome set +1 spare set and an impact set + a spare set, but that is crazy  :D

Granted, I'm just a DIY guy so I'm not running into as many odd needs as a pro, but I have basically 3 sets total and I haven't ever wanted or needed more. If I do wind up with more, it'll likely be another set for impacts with a wobble head design, but I sincerely doubt I'll ever need that. I do the vast majority of my work with basic chromed stuff and I'm usually not concerned with the increased time it takes me to spin a nut off by hand.
  1. I have pretty wide variety of standard squared drive head lengths in all drive sizes including a couple extra long ones for each drive size.
  2. I have a pretty wide variety of wobble heads in all drive sizes with the more common lengths.
  3. And I have a small set of only the most common sizes for my impacts with the stronger, standard squared drive heads.

I have mine on one of those cheap socket rails laid on its side. My 3 longest are too long for front to back placement so they live at the back of the drawer.

I've been meaning to get a current picture, but I never seem to remember when I'm near my tool box. This is one from a couple of years ago

If the roll around I think you need to get a few more. I just have them in a drawer. Beside the ones in sets or on toolboards. Basically the excess for filling sets if need be

I just use some old proto and Blackhawk tool boards for my extras so I know I can grab one fast if my regulars disappear in front of my face. Each board has a different. drive size. I bought some of those snap on pakty trays the tools come in new for each drive size that I keep in my utility cart, and I keep the 18"+ extensions in my top compartment in the kr1000. If I can fill a drawer full of lifetime warranty extensions that's money I could spend on other tools and they go on eBay, unless if it's older proto 1/4 extensions, I hoard those as I can't replace them and the long lengths are awesome

Me too. If I bought a box big enough to lay my tools out side by side it would take up my whole garage. Mechanics have worked for decades with less space than you have.

Often you have already extensions or you realize for a particular job you need a particular one, length, wobble etc.... So when you go to purchase it you find a deal for a set vs just the one you need so you go for the great buy $$. Other-times you want a particular tool set and guess what it comes with some extensions, so you really don't need it but the price is right as you really need the set but could care less about the extensions so again guess what you have now accumulated more extension. Don't criticize this guy he is showing what was asked and if you have been using tools for repairs for any length of time you will end up with a collection. You guys are just jealous! :) :)

I think you misunderstood my comment. I was in agreement with 48548 about the way he stores his extensions. I store mine the same way. Not jealous of anyone here.
