I had all my tools stolen about 5 years ago and refused for years to buy new ones when the Toyota dealership filled my brake reservoir with coolant and the repair was $2200 (they refused to admit fault) we found used acuator for $100 on eBay she said to spend the rest of what the repair would have cost on a tool set and I have been doing that ever since

Now I have more tools then ever and the wife couldn't be happier with all the money we save

75% of my stuff I had before we got married. In fact, I had bought and remodeled our 1st house 6 months before we got married. I moved all my stuff in at that time, long before the 1st piece of furniture arrived. The big machinery added after marriage (milling machine, surface grinder, etc.) was all paid for within 6 months with side work. She really doesn't care what I do because my tool & machinery flipping supports my hobby.

I'm single. Just spent $450 on a BJP1 balljoint press. Really didn't want to spend the money for years, and it was always a shop tool. Now that I'm no longer an auto mechanic, there are no shop tools to use....gotta buy it myself!

Past girlfriends haven't said a peep about tool costs. They were always very appreciative of how handy I was. My last girlfriend sent me a heartfelt thankyou text out of the blue a few months after we had broken up, thanking me for putting new tires on her car for her after a brutal winter storm had hit.

It's my money, I spend it as I please. Tools she doesn't really seem to get excited about. I get some ribbing for "toys" like the garden tractor or trailer.

I just do as I please, and don't even think about buying anything that I want or need.... I just do it. She keeps asking what am I going to do with all this "****", and I keep telling her, that is her next husbands problem.

My wife is great toward my tool purchases. But, there is a catch in my situation.

She got interested in woodworking a few years ago, and she is buying a LOT more tools than I am now. I'm just buying tools as I need them now since I have been in the automotive field since the 1980's.

So,,,,,,,,,I guess she needs to come in here and answer the question from her perspective about how I support her tool fetish. HA! HA!

My wife likes when I fix something and knows I need tools to do so but now I'm buying more tools than I am fixing things and the tools are piling up and her car is in garage in need of repair. She goes with me to hunt for tools but waits in the car with kiddos and every time I come out she is pissed I was in there so long lol. She sometimes goes in with me and looks at them and picks out something old or useless to me but she has started to collect a few odd and end tools. She just likes odd wrenches and screwdrivers I started her a tool box so she could have her own but it's not needed. She's tired of my tool obsession she says it's all I talk about and is tired of hearing it. She also started budgeting me on tools giving me redicoulsly small spending caps like 10-20 bucks and I make do never payed more than $5 for a tool accept for power tools but She bought a used pink Snap on instinct screwdriver for $20 which probably isn't bad but sheesh. I know our funds aren't that well right now and we have 6 kids and she says I'll waste my last dime on a good deal on a tool but I do make sure my kids have what they need and I let her buy whatever as well. She also says that I got to many of the same tools and keep buying the same things but I can't pass up a steal of deal. I don't have friends or talk to my family and do alit around house and with kids I should at least get some happiness out of my only hobby. I could always double or quadruple my money on what I buy at least I tell her is how I get what I want. I learned happy wife happy life.

I <3 my wife. Tools are in the family budget.
Additionally, she is gifted at finding deals. I tell her what tool I need / want and she finds it usually at a ridiculous price. Sometimes she will find deal with out me asking. She will send me a link every now and then and say " Do you want this ? Do you need this? Is this a good deal ?"

Interesting post, my response is a combination of several others here. I voted “Favorable”.

My "significant other" , together 15+ years, became very happy I had the tools and knowledge of how to use them when I would come get her when her pos car would break down. They’ve all (g/fs) seemed to like that for some reason.

When we started going out she knew I spent a lot of money on cars (7 right now), motorcycles (6 right now) and tools. 30+ years of tool accumulation after nearly EVERYTHING I had was stolen in the 70s (not gonna count them all).

She cooks (very well) and takes care of a number of other things around the house. I fix/improve things around the house, which saves a lot of money but of which she appreciates. She also found the house we are in and knew the garage was very close to perfect for me, and the budget we had.

She bought a toolbox specifically for all my Craftsman stuff she knew I had a lot and I didn’t even mention it – she just got it one Xmas. She also knows how to use a number of my tools and can help with things if a hand is needed.

I help her with her hobbies/side business (including built pieces for her weaving loom), she likes my racecar thing and likes to help, she is really good with a stopwatch and como equipment.

She’s a keeper, me? Sometimes not do much.

I got lucky, my "SO" isn't used to guys like me and thinks it's flat out attractive that I'm so into tools. Hoping that mentality won't wear out.

I have to fill out an approval form, and she has to sign it.

Mine seems to have less of a problem with my actual tool purchases and more of a problem with my GJ time. The other day I brought her home a 6 pack of the locally brewed blueberry vanilla wheat beer she loves and some Milky Way Darks. After she is done with Nursing school next year I plan on starting my 1st classic truck project and I know I will have to find creative ways like this to "pay" for my garage time. Even after 15 years of marriage and 4 girls though she is still the hottest chick I see everyday so I do try to keep her happy.

At the end of the day if a female can't understand that tools fix things then they aren't logical. And if a guy buys more then he can afford he's just like the rest of us! HAHA

Tools I buy to fix things around the house get a big thumbs up.
Tools I buy for my race car, not so much. The reality is my life is better the less I talk about it. If she asks how much I normally divide by 5 and round down.

She buys me tools for Christmas, plus I keep all five cars and trucks running myself. So she understands a man needs tools to do this.

My wife doesn't care much anymore. She just let me order my new tool chest for my upcoming birthday. She knows its my hobby and I thoroughly enjoy being in the garage and messing with cars. She used to have a problem with it. I help around the house and clean up before I do stuff in the garage and she's peachy keen. I also try and keep her happy with random gifts, nothing huge or wild but surprise vacations once in a while and the random showing up with an iced tea or diet coke to her office make her as happy as ever.

Funny. A few years back for Christmas I bought my wife her own toolbox for all her crafting and scrapbooking stuff. Now she dedicates a whole drawer to nail polish so she can lock it up and keep our girls from making our house smell like a nail salon 24/7.

This was a HD black Friday Husky combo. My wife and I dismantled it, primed it and painted it a semi-flat white not long after she got it.cc41cbd27b36fba7364366a109eb0146.jpg

Luckily my wife can care less about my tool/ auto parts addiction, I have literally spent complete pay checks on "toys" without having to deal with **** from her. As long as my share of the responsibilities are paid and taken care of she can care less on where or how my money is spent.

Wife texts me a photo of a bottle carrier with 7 glass quart oil bottles in it from an estate sale while I was at work one Friday morning, saying she knows I like them so she bought them.
Wife texts me months later and tells me she has found lots of my favorite automotive tool brand (Hazet) at another estate sale......she is well trained!
