Hello all. Newer member with a question. Im looking to build a 30 by 40 shop early next year. I am wanting to put the shop door on the long side. Question is is there any advantage to having one 18 foot door verses two 10 foot doors? The shop will be my play ground with a two post lift and small break/rest room. I work on/maintain my rides and my familys cars. I also do some wood and metal work. Any insite on the doors would be great.

Thanks,

Jason

I personally like having a door per bay. It just makes it easier for everything in my opinion. If you had some stuff stacked in front of the door in one bay while working on a car, it won't get in the way/look weird because it's behind it's respective door. Whereas if you had the 18 foot wide, stuff could get in the way of things coming in or out, and it will look a little cluttered with the door open. Plus if you did the 2 doors on opposite ends it could be a flow through if you ever needed to store more cars, larger items, etc.

Also, with wood working, you'll most likely want to have a walled off separate area for this. Sawdust is not so great going all over your shop

I have a double and a single instead of three doors. If I want to pull a vehicle into the center of two bays, I can. I also have a side door in the back, for side access to that area.

Don't ask.
I went with 2 10' doors (were supposed to be 12'). Now I'm thinking of replacing them with one approximately 22' door.
The reason I wanted the 12' wide doors is being is that I often back trailers in or back the truck half way in to load or unload stuff. 10' doesn't allow much room to walk next to the truck.
