Greetings!

I am new to this forum and enjoy the camaraderie and helpful advice. I'm a DIY'er and perform basic maintenance on my cars.

I haven't purchased a new ratchet in over 20 years until I joined this forum and recently purchased 10 new ratchets in the past month. I haven't had a chance to use any of them yet, but I'm ready for my next oil change!!!

The "Hot Deals" thread has been a bad influence on my wallet. LOL.

Cheers!

I've got a decent amount but not nearly as many as some others. I'll break it down between what I have at work and at home.

WORK
• GearWrench fixed head 24" 120XP ½" drive
• GearWrench fixed head standard length 90T in ¼" ⅜" and ½" drive
• Westward fixed head standard length ½" drive
• Craftsman fixed head standard length ⅜" drive
• Snap-On fixed head long handle ¼" and ½" drive
• Snap-On flex head long handle ⅜" drive
- Need to buy the SO ⅜" fixed head and ¼" and ½" flex heads still to complete both sets
(all ratchets are chrome handle)
• Also an IR ⅜" drive air ratchet if that counts too

HOME
• Stanley black chrome fixed head standard length ¼" ⅜" and ½" drive
• Craftsman fixed head standard length ¼" and ½" drive
• Mastercraft fixed head standard length ¼" ⅜" and ½" drive

Too many I am afraid.

Lets see....1/4, 3/8. 3/8 extended, 1/2 all Milwaukee Fuel.

Many 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2", various brands including Gearwrench, Proto, Pittsburgh, Craftsman, etc......

My favorites have to be the milwaukees, followed by the rotating head Pittsburgh, strangely enough...

Fifteen, but only two of them get used. Snap-on 3/8 flex and 1/4 flex. The rest account for about two percent of the use.

I am 66 years and at the end of it all so not buying many ratchets or sockets these day. I just went through my stuff recently to have the right mix of ratchets, sockets, extension bars and wrenches in the basement and out in the garage boxes. 3, 1/4", 8 or 10 3/8" 6 or 8 1/2" split equally between the 2 boxes. Mostly Craftsman, Kal and SK. No specialty ratchets except a long handled 1/2" Proto.

If we're talking square drive ratchets then somewhere around 40. Got them scattered about and I don't like switching sockets mid-job so I use several at a time.

I went down the "ratchet hole" a couple years ago and have wound up with twenty or so (I'm not going to count for the purposes of plausible deniability...).

If I had to get down to a "minimum" I'd keep:

1/4" Icon roto-head
3/8" Icon roto-head
3/8" Snap On F80
3/8" Snap On FL80
1/2" Carlyle

3/8" Milwaukee Fuel

On a budget I'd happily exchange the SnapOns for a Tekton or Icon equivalent. The Milwaukee gets a lot of work.

(this is only what's in the cart...)

Not as many as a bunch of people apparently.

In my shop:
1/4 Bahco
1/4 Snap On flex
3/8 Snap On fixed
3/8 Snap On flex (old course tooth)
3/8 Tekton fixed
3/8 Snap On stubby
3/8 Old Craftsman round head
1/2 Snap On flex head

In my enclosed trailer
1/4 fixed
3/8 fixed
1/2 fixed
All cheap of unremembered makes because they go to the track with me and are prone to getting loaned out.

and a single 1/2" Pittsburg in the trailer box on my open trailer to work the lashing winches I use to tie down vehicles.

So I think that works out to 12 total. Damn I need to step up my game.

edit to add powered

1/4" Mac pneumatic
3/8" Astro pneumatic

And if you count impacts

3/8" Astro Nano pneumatic
1/2" Aircat 1150

3/8" Dewalt mid torque
1/2" Dewalt mid torque
1/2" Dewalt high torque

Yup. Think thats about the sweet spot. I've got 13 in my box, 2 electric (no air)

Got a few more misc in kits and odds and ends, but 13 see regular use.

Too many thanks to this Forum, but no regrets, it opened up lots of opportunities to learn and use various ones.

I've got more in my overflow box and a few more in my travel/carry box. The ones pictured are the ones I work with.

Also have a 1/4" flex head on the way. 20210318_193438.jpeg

Those quantities ain't nuttin; wait until the big boys stop by this thread.

I have about 100 1/4" drive ratchets nearly all are Made in the USA. Not too many duplicates. But I am getting older and have slowed way down. Thinking about how to get the proper return on them rather than having the family sell them for a nickle on the dollar after I am dead. Probably, a lot of young people like those on this forum will come across some hella deals on vintage USA tools as we baby boomers age out. Just the truth mamm, nuttin but the truth.

Not counting the ones in socket sets:
2x 1/4”
5x 3/8”
5x 1/2”

The only duplicates are a pair of Chinese 1/2” long handle soft grips that is my go to 1/2” ratchet, one lives in each shop. There is a bit of duplication in the 3/8, there’s a f80, a bluepoint quick release that’s the same size and the sealey equivalent, which is quite handy having redundancy, although it’s always the f80 I pick up first if it’s there.

I’ve also got a no7 and a 100th anniversary s72 that live on my desk to play with when I’m bored on the phone

Some of you have very extensive ratchet collections. Nice!

I like the idea of having one on my desk as a stress reliever.

Thanks for sharing!

I have like 6 ratchets I normally use and probably 20-30 floating around in tool sets and as specialty ratchets.

Other than maybe a long 1/2" ratchet and if I want to spend money milwaukee battery ratchets I just don't see buying any new ratchets.

I counted 24 right off but probably have more. I need more lol it never feels like I have enough. I only have one cordless ratchet and one air ratchet so if you count those it’s 26 in total. Probably have way more that I’m forgetting. Majority of them are at work some at home too. Only one of those is a tool truck ratchet and that’s my Matco locking flex head. The rest are a mix of brands like Craftsman, Capri, Icon, Pittsburgh, Stanley, PowerBuilt, Proto, Challenger, etc

I refuse to sell, because I do, very rarely, use nearly all of them.

I have a Bonney 1/2 drive round head I like for setting tightness on taped wheel bearings. Big 'ol direction knob, perfect for greasy hands, last guy used it like a hammer regularly. I have a 3/8 GW roto-ratchet, which I use for GM transverse V6 rear spark plugs on the pushrod engines, the HF pittsburgh pro with the grippy rubber all over can be perfect inside doors due to the slight offset.....

Mostly all the duplicates became my home set when I bought a house and had a garage.

If we count thumbwheels and the 5 in my basement, two in the truck, one in a kitchen drawer and one in the car...thirty something. Seems like about the right amount to me, but I suppose I should add a few more just to be safe. I am slow enough without having to swap sockets and extensions once I start a project so it's just a convenience and because I can thing.

More than I really need. I could go count most of them, but just thinking through it, 30-40.

Haha, blows my mind how many some of you guys have. Never seen the need for that many, and I've been turning wrenches as a career all my life.

In the shop I think I have:
Standard and long 1/4"
Stubby, standard, long, long flex, long roto head in 3/8
Standard length and long flex in 1/2
Standard length and a 3ft. in 3/4.

Two electrics and an air in 3/8

Road box has a standard length 1/2, standard length and long flex 3/8, and standard length 1/4.

Covers everything I've ever needed to do. Why have multiples of basically the same ratchet? Seems like a waste of money to me.
