Off the top of my head I think there's 7 or 8 in my toolbox, one in my car toolbox, and one more in my toolbag in the car.

There's a few more interesting ratchets I'd like to get, but I can't justify another $30-40 when I already have so many.

I have 20 ratchets between the toolbox in my garage, the ratchets / sets I keep on my truck and in my work van and the ratchets I have for work.

M12 1/4"

M12 3/8"

a whole bunch of Craftsman going back to 1972

S&K 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 inch from the early 80's

Various Snap-On in 1/4 to 1/2" , including flex head 1/4 and 3/8 drives that are my "go to" favorites.

Probably about 25 all together... long handles, shorts, standard, flex.

there are a couple of fine tooth ones mixed in too

edit: plus a Snap ON 3/8 air ratchet from 1985 and a 1/4 inch MAC from the late 90's..... a drop of oil in them every use and they will run forever

50+ or so. Mix of everything. Only a few duplicates, but lots of 3 pack sets of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2. Craftsman USA and Taiwan, Carlyle, Gearwrench, Kobalt/Husky/Pittsburgh, couple odd parts store ones that showed up over the years, and one lone Snap On. Plus about 8 torque wrenches. Strictly DIY for me, but I have found it is handy to have a selection so I don't need to swap sockets as much, and as cars have gotten less roomy the need for more flex, stubby and thin head ones has gotten greater.

I’ve added 6 since my last post a USA Craftsman 1/2 drive VU code. A cheap flex head 1/4 that was in a bucket of tools from an estate sale. Then two warranty replacement ratchets from Craftsman and I got to keep the old ones and I fixed them too. A Powr-Kraft 1/2 drive and 1/2 drive Proto long. So that makes 34 ratchets.

Prior to joining this forum I had four Craftsman ratchets.

Now, I've probably got close to 20 and that's even after I gave away a few.

I ordered another SK earlier this week..

I have at least 20 ratchets and I would trade all of them for the one 1/4" antique, older than dirt, maybe one of the first ever made that I have either misplaced or it walked away.

I've got 17, these below plus 3 more Craftsman teardrops in 3 sizes I keep in my truck. That's four 1/2" drive, eight 3/8" drive, and five 1/4" drive. I had half this amount before last month when my FIL gave me all his hand tools, I was thinking I was nuts for having this many ratchets but compared to some of you I barely have any.

My SO and Mac 3/8 flex heads get 90% of the use, and then there's a cheap KS 1/4 drive someone left under my hood and Kobalt 1/4 drive flex that gets most of the remaining use. I'll have to see how I like the 1/4" drive Mac I got from my FIL, and I already know the 3/8" SK that I got from him is pretty nice and is going to get used. It was gummed up but after cleaning it out and re-lubing it's really smooth now.

Think I've got 12 or 13 hand ratchets as of this post, something like that. With more incoming I'm sure. Plus my battery tools and torque wrenches if you want to count those too.

The thing is, I try to make sure they are all different. Meaning I've got long, short, flex head, fixed head, etc... The idea being is they all serve a purpose and have their uses. I'm not much of a "one of this tool, whatever the tool may be, does everything" kind of guy.

Experience has shown me that sometimes you need a mini 1/4" ratchet to fit in a tight spot or a super long 24" 1/2" ratchet to break loose a stubborn bolt/nut. Or sometimes you just need something shorter because there is not enough room to work a long handled ratchet, so fourth and so on. You would be surprised how many times I've used my stubby 3/8".

I take the same approach with every "category of tool," rather it be screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, pliers, etc. Different sizes, styles, lengths, etc. They all have a use and serve their purpose. I'm not a tool collector or tool hoarder like much of the GJ population, I buy tools to use them.

Not gonna count!

Notable ratchets include an olde 1960s or 1950s 1/4" Walden (or so the experts tell me) that was given to me when I was young by an adult mechanic. It started me off on fixin' up cars.

A couple of Nepros cause they so pretty.

Nepros is replacing most of my Snappy (yes, even the Dual 80), except a bent handle flex and another one that it seems like only Snappy makes.

A new Hazet 1/2" tho I am mostly a 3'8" kinda guy...

And as a cranky, retired geezer I have been able to avoid the allure of cordless ratchets and impact guns. I got all my impact needs taken care of with access to a commercial garage about 15 years ago. (I hope they're all taken care of...)

I have 13, which is a number that I can't ever seem to get away from. I use the four Craftsman ones about 90% of the time, and I recently put a rebuild kit in the Craftsman flex ratchet. Despite being a 36t ratchet, I just love that crappy little ratchet. I'm just a diy'er these days, so these will likely get me through all I need at this point.

Last count 45 ratchets and all have a purpose including a couple junkers for when someone asks to borrow one. Then 3 air and 1 electric.

I was watching a show that featured an organizer who was looking at one persons belongings. She said the person had 9 hammers and there was no reason to have more than one. Silly girl. I have 17 and each has a purpose. Some like the brass and copper do not get used often but there are times you do not want to create a spark.

This thread isn't about need. :lol_hitti
'Merica (y)

We don't have to justify our wants with needs. Thank God. Life would be pretty boring if so...

As far as my ratchet count goes, I have no idea and I imagine it would take a good chunk of the day to figure it out accurately. Between work and my home shop and what I keep in a mobile set, it's just hard to say. If I were forced to guess, I'd say in the 30s.

Let's just say a shitload. At least 50 but I'm sure it's more. What's really weird is that I've got tons of the new stuff but my main squeeze is still my Williams B52 and B54 from 35 years ago. I'm sort of embarrassed to say that but the truth is the truth.

I’m not at the house right now, so I can’t go out and count, but just thinking about it off the top of my head it’s gotta be around 20-30. But only 12-14 are regular users. But I’m always looking for the next deal I can’t miss.

A lot. Especially for a weekend warrior.

7- 1/4 drive
11- 3/8 drive
6- 1/2 drive
1- 3/4 drive

So, 28 hand ratchets. 1 battery powered 1/2 drive, and 2 pneumatic.

31 total. I use maybe 6 of them regularly.

I also have 5 speeders. Do those count? I dont ever use those. I have an s-k, 1/2, a SO 1/4, and a full set of walden speeders.

"I like Ike." However he does look suspiciously like a 'tool-polisher.' I have a BNIB S-K 1/4" & 3/8" combo socket wrench & ratchets set that probably doesn't look as-good as these!

I'm surprised at 'Looking4'67galaxieconvert's' comment. I took him to be more-of a 'git 'er-done' kinda-guy. Someone who wouldn't care if there were multiple threads on a topic, especially involving tools, rather-than (Ugh!) feet! I'm gonna avoid "WTF pics" until the feet fetishists leave.

Without counting, I guess I have probably 20 in 1/4" - 3/8" - 1/2" - 3/4" sizes, and it might be higher. The oldest I have, since new, is a Wright 'tootsie-roll' handle 3/8" I got in a metric set, almost 55 years ago. It still works fine.

A question: do palm-ratchets count? Er, make that number, 'twenty-four.'

Got them scattered about and I don't like switching sockets mid-job so I use several at a time.

Never crossed my mind to do such a thing, I like it. No idea how many ratchets I have but it's probably a little over 20.

9 currently in my tool box, plus an electric 3/8" M12 and 3 hand ratchets in a road box. So not too many but enough for a weekend warrior.

Plus 4 breaker bars and 2 torque wrenches although the breakers don't ratchet

I don't have duplicates when it comes to ratchets, and I'm not a tool collector. If I own a ratchet, it's because that ratchet does a certain job better than any of the other ratchets I own.

I have
10- 1/4" drive.
10- 3/8" drive.
6- 1/2" drive.
1- 3/4" drive.
1- 1" drive.

I don't need any more, but I'm not going to be selling any of the ratchets I have now either.
