Depending on how you define socket sets, I have 1-5.

The other sets are not as extensive as my main 2 drawers.

This is an old pic of my main drawer.

Yeah, shipping is brutal. Everyone's conditioned to expect free shipping via Amazon and the individual shipper rates continue to go up. I shipped around ten 1/2 deep sockets recently and it was over $20.

You aren't kidding. I shipped an aluminum intake Friday and it was $30.75 to the next state over. I've shipped a ton of car parts but nothing in the last two years.

There comes a time when sockets and ratchets just get added. Are they sets ? Well they weren't bought as a set.

If they are drive type like Allen or internal torx do they count?
I have more than thirty groups of similar type sockets in different sizes in one drawer is this one set or more?

The problem with sockets and filling out sets in an exchange is that it costs minimum of about $4 to ship any socket, and $5 if it's a heavier one.
Amazon sells Craftsman "open stock". If you have PRIME it is free shipping.

My stuff is old (the oldest is over 50 yo) so in all cases I have both SAE and Metric.

1/4" SAE and Metric standard depth
3/8" SAE and Metric standard depth and deep
3/8" SAE and Metric deep impact
1/2" SAE and Metric standard depth and deep
1/2" SAE and Metric deep impact
I forgot, I have 1/4" SAE and Metric standard depth AND 3/8" SAE and Metric standard depth and deep in my travel box.

I also forgot to include my Torx and Allen.

Re: How many socket sets (multiples of same drive size) do you own?

I'll play.

Granted, I'm a hobbyist and I'm not one to pay for truck brands as a result, I have largely made up my collection from the Crappy Tire flyer over the years.

and that allows me to contribute here, the following:
1 limited edition Mastercraft Maximum 3/8" drive socket set
1 1/2, 3/8, 1/4" drive Mastercraft set. Originally in a case that ultimately exploded after falling off a stool, because I swear they rig those stupid plastic blow mold cases to do just that.
1 Mastercraft spline drive socket set 1/4 and 3/8" drive.
1 1/2, 3/8, 1/4" drive Craftsman set
1 3/8, 1/4" Mastercraft set
Misc sockets, ratchets and extensions picked up at garage sales or hand-me-downs.

All in all I think I'm at about 20 ratchets in total.

Screwdrivers and wrenches are another story all together, you all know how it goes.

The options in the poll are far FAR too low. I wouldn't blink at someone that had 10 sets of sockets. 1/4" deep and shallow sets in SAE & metric brings you to 4 right off the bat, triple that for 3/8" and 1/2" sets and you've got your basic chrome sockets covered not even counting impact sockets which could easily be another 3-6 sets (double that for SAE/metric), and then you have universal joint sockets (chrome and impact), hex sockets, torx, external torx, stubby & extended reach hex and/or torx sockets. In all honesty I'd be more shocked if someone (mechanically inclined) over 20 only had one or two sets of sockets.

Ultimately I plan on having shallow and deep 12 and 6 point sets in SAE and metric in 1/4-1/2 drive in the garage and having a complete 12 point set in the basement.

I have alot of sets off hand I would say I have
at least 6 1/4 drive sets. 10ish 3/8 dr and 3 more sets to come in the next few months. (I am building my dream master 3/8 drive set)
1/2 drive I have about 8 probably that I know of off hand.
That isn't counting the torx, hex or specialty sockets. I am a sucker for socket sets I like having back up sets.

Meanwhile, they can ship container loads of **** from China for pennies..

You can buy items on eBay for $5 with free shipping from China 7000 miles away, but if I want to mail something to my friend in the same state, its $10+ at least

To the point, so far I have no duplicates, other than the same sizes in different drives. Hoping to get a nice tool box soon and organize them properly. I made a spreadsheet listing all of them

Would agree it depends on how you define set. Like many I got a Craftsman set (about 40 years ago) and that started it all. I have about 3 quarter inch sets two SAE, one Metric, same with 3/8", but lots of spares to almost make a fourth set of metric. One SAE half inch drive set, One 3/8" deep sockets set, various metric deep sockets, various impact sockets, various metric half inch, and a Torch set and I am sure some I am forgetting. Two of the most used is plenty for me, one stays in the tool drawer one (cheaper set) goes in a small traveling bag for road trips in my old cars.

A 'set' to me, is complete 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive sockets/ratchets/extensions. All in 12pt and 6pt. Plus specialty sockets. I have sets in three different locations: Main house Garage, Basement, and at my lake house garage. By far, the most complete set resides in my main house garage, where I also have 3/8 and 1/2 impact socket sets. No 3/4 drive (or larger). Yet...

Oh, and I also carry a $29 HF tool kit in my pickup truck. Does that count? If it does, then the small tool 'kit' I assembled for my 1993 Harley FLHS, has to count. I carry that when touring.

Come to think of it, I also have a pontoon boat and a center console boat. Probably need to assemble small 'kits' to keep on them too.

At some point I begin to think a drug addiction would have been cheaper than a tool addiction....

I don't have many real duplicates. I'm like many on here and have Metric and SAE deep and shallow in 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" plus the same for impacts in 1/2". I have some shallow 3/8" impacts in Metric and some universal 3/8" impacts and chrome 1/4" universals. Then there are the hex sockets, long hex, and torx sockets. Those all live in my main drawer of my toolbox. I also have some 12 point sockets in 1/2" impact and 3/8" chrome that mostly stay in their blow molded cases on a shelf but are needed often enough that I am glad I have them.

But none of those are what I consider duplicates. I do have a fairly complete set of metric and sae in all three drive sizes in my car trailer that I take to the track. I suppose those are my duplicates.

Re: How many socket sets (multiples of same drive size) do you own?

I have at least 8-10 sets. I buy sockets at the pawn shops individually and piece together a set most of which the brands match like I put together a whole set of Kobalt all the same generation for $10 same with the many Craftsman and Popular Mechanics tool sets I have put together. That is one brand I wish I still could buy new is Popular Mechanics they were great tools. But the 8-10 is just the complete sets I have bought not the ones I piece together if you count those I’d estimate 15-20 and that’s between work, home and the vehicles.

Re: How many socket sets (multiples of same drive size) do you own?

I have a lot, with many duplications. Inherited both my father's and grandfather's tools. GF had a mechanic's garage back in 50s, then became an orange farmer. So lots of cool old tools and socket sets from GF. My father was just home mechanical stuff, but had decent amount of tools. Likely more than most any neighbors unless they were professional mechanic type job. Then all the docket sets I already owned purchased when I was younger.

I have 1/4 through 3/4 drive. SAE and metric, std and deep, 6, 8 and 12 points, most are chrome plated. Old S-K, majority are Craftsman, some Snap-On, some can't remember. Most are well used, a few are near new.

In total probably like 18 sets or more, probably more, I haven't ever counted them all. But as previously mentioned, depends on exact definition of a set.

My duplicates are all 1/4 drive. I started with Craftsman USA. Then TOPTUL. Then Carlyle. Then OEM. Now Koken. Nepros is next and then I'm done. All just wants not needs. I still have them all.

Luckily I use 1/4 99% of the time, so my cost and storage needs are minimized.

I have 3/8 and 1/2 sets in shallow and deep, all TOPTUL. I have 1/2 deep and 3/8 deep in impact sockets, TEKTON. So I don't really have a huge amount of money invested.

I do have torx and hex, in a standard bit driver set as well VIM micro bit sets.

Screwdrivers, that's my weakness. Luckily screwdrivers are inexpensive, for the most part. I just need some PB Swiss and I'm done.

I have a Sunex kit that has SAE and Metric in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" - I call that my travel/car show set, but it's turned out to be the "home" set as I don't like the ratchets and find the case overlarge to travel with. I think that's the only SAE sockets I have.

In my cart I have Sunex impact metric sets in 1/2" and 1/4" - probably could have skipped the 1/4" set.

I have Tekton chrome metric sets in 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" that live in my cart and an Icon 3/8" metric chrome set that is my actual travel set. It also provides dupes when I'm running multiple ratchets and two wind up with the same size (e.g. a roto and a regular).

I have an orphan 10mm socket from when I thought I lost my 10mm in my old Husky set, then found it again (it rode around in the engine bay of my old BMW for a year or so, went to a variety of places and somehow managed to never fall out). When I went tool-crazy...I mean when I decided to upgrade my tools, the Husky set was among the first things to go - donated to a local charity. But I kept the unreplacement 10mm and it's come in very handy.

If I start counting impact sets and everything separately then I have a lot of sets. However I assume you mean main sets. I have one big set in my box, one set on the road, and one extra set that was my first ever set I got, which is now been semi retired.

So I count 3 sets.

I'm retired now. One night working on a conveyor over the river I thought if I drop the ratchet and socket I won't be able to retrieve it and the company won't replace it as I was part time. It was a set of Wrights I bought a young man. So I picked up a another 1/2" set from Canadian Tire, they were closing out Made In Canada Maple Leaf Grays. So I had a set at home and and a work set. With too much time on my hands now and looking on line, I saw SK sockets from 1958-63. They were neat, four dimples, instead of a single hole, and tapered noses. At the fleamarket I found a set, so for $20 it came home with me. Now that's three sets of 1/2" drive inch. I'm on look out for another tool box bottom.

Could I get by with one set? Maybe, but it sure is nice to not have to hunt down a tool every time I need it. I’ve got sets in the garage, house, shed, car, and I put together a ‘traveling’ tool kit that has most tools I’d need for general automotive/household work since I’ve been traveling to help out family a lot more. And I’ve got a couple extras. I bought a set on clearance to give to the grandson when he gets a bit older. And I’ve got some of my grandfather’s old tools too that don’t really get used.

Answering this question may incriminate me. For 3/8 drive I have at least 4 sets in normal short sockets, 3 sets of deep, a set of mid length and a set of shallow. Then 2 sets of 1/2 drive and 2 sets of 1/4. And that's just my main box in the shop. Another set of all the normal stuff in the barn and a 100 pc set in each of my 10 Mustangs. (If you're going to drive old cars they're going to break so I might as well be prepared. And I don't want to have to search and make sure I have a set in the car before I drive it.)

Depends on what you consider a set. Is a set an assortment of sockets in a like drive size? Is a set a boxed assortment that were all bought together? Is a set the contents of a
socket drawer?

In my shop I have chrome sockets in 4 drive sizes starting at 4mm and going all the way to 36mm plus similiar sockets in SAE sizes.

In my truck I have a small boxed set of 1/4" drive. A complete boxed set of 3/8" drive, metric, SAE, shallow and deep. Also an assortment of 1/2" drive shallow mainly to cover field repairs on farm equipment a few 1/2" drive seep sockets for common applications and a couple 3/4" drive for sizes that correspond to bolts on my equipment. Also have all the corresponding wrenches plus a few large adjustables. Sounds like alot but it all fits in a single compartment of my work truck and has saved me LOTS of "windshield" time over the years.

To answer your question more directly by most peoples standards between truck and shop I have about 13 sets of sockets across multiple drive sizes and around 20 single sockets with specific uses. Probably 5 complete sets of wrenches and 100 or so duplicates/triplicates in various locations

Is this a trick question? I've got all I need X 2. Had a set of tools for work and one for home. Then I retired.

I've got 4 or 5 3/8" sets going of various brands spread among daily users, truck box, and spare backup sets in case of fire or theft.
Mostly vintage stuff.

Plus some 1/4" and 1/2" sets that see different amounts of use.

How is 4+ the highest choice, should of been 1, 3, 5, 10, 15+. More than toes and fingers you have could of been a choice also.

My problem with sockets, ratchets, wrenches, screw drivers. I will get another set but never get rid of anything, just stash the extras all over the place

I have two complete 200 socket sets, but probably close to 1000 or maybe even 1200 individual sockets, spread between two houses, a garage, a shop, a shed, and five vehicles.

“Sets” is a nebulous description, as it can describe a seven piece 1/4” rail of metric sockets or a 200 piece set of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2” drive sockets , both shallow and deep.

Even more if you extend the range and add mid depth pieces.

Amen to that, I have one ridiculous large set in my box and a smaller version in my van!!!

I THINK the O.P. was asking about Duplicate sets of the same type/drive size.
"View Poll Results: How many socket sets (multiples of same drive sizes) do you own?"

Well considering only one response in five is not "4+" I stand by my statement. LOL
Really the question "How many socket sets (multiples of same drive sizes) do you own?" I find to be poorly worded. No offense to OP it just doesn't seem to do a very good job of defining what he's looking to find out. Even if he is just wondering how many sets of each drive size we have, the options still seem to be rather low even for those of us that can not really figure out anything more than a rough guesstimate. You still duplicate drive sizes with numerous combinations of shallow, deep & mid in SAE & metric in 6 point, triple square and 12 point. Then you add in "specialty" sockets such as universal, 37 different flavors of bit insert sockets, eTorx etc etc ad nauseum. Even if he is wondering how how many of us have a 1/4 socket set in the garage, another in the car, one in our saddlebags and another set in a toolbox in the house to grab and go, our memberships propensity to go out and grab a set just because they saw someone posted it in the new tool acquisition thread alone would make the choices all being low single digit rather limiting. You guys know who you are. I know I've been one of them before!

At least three full sets in 1/2”, 3/8” and 1/4” including metric and SAE and regular and deep.

Plus impacts, a huge Sunex 3/8”’set and some Snappy SAE impacts, some
stubby impacts and 1/4” impacts.
