Let’s revive a poll I started 3 years ago. There seems to be renewed interest now.

All forms of vises count except for little pin vises or vice grip pliers. That means count your drill press vises, mill vises, post, leg, or blacksmith vises, bench mount type mechanic or machinist vises. Table top clamp on ones count too. I consider a workmate collapsible clamping table to be a vise so let’s count them too. Likewise the built in woodworking vises front and tail, that traditional woodworking benches have on them. Include all of your specialty pipe vises and saw sharpening vises as well.
Big or small...we count them all!

Feel free to post below with your comments whether or not you choose to participate.

Let the games begin.

Haha! I see you "upped the ante" for the top numbers!

Will you make a call on B&D Workmate vises this time? In or out?

I just now edited the rules to include workmates. I have only one of them...very handy. But I realize that more than a few of us have several or even whole collections of them.

Thanks for reminding me, Outlaw!

6 of them...a 6", a 4", a 3.5", a 3", a 2.5" and a 2". Nice range.
7 counting a Reed pipe vise.

Re: How many vises do you own?

As of now, about 45% of the respondents own MORE than 10 vises.
Except for my GJ buddies, none of my friends have more than one.
Draw your own conclusions. :)

Re: How many vises do you own?

Shift: it was a fun thread last time and should be interesting and fun again. since i'm moving my shop and downsizing (ORGANIZING) i might be able to actually count mine this time, but for now let's just say I have a few.

ALL: there was a link to Vises (a member here) that showed a YouTube video of his 700 vises and probably 100+ anvils and his cool stuff and it made me dizzy. i'm pretty sure he wants to start a museum, but his little collection might be the largest one i know of.

here's the youtube video link that LARRY G posted on the other thread:

CHEERS!!

I copied and pasted this from the other thread and my total was six.

A small Wilton in the car trailer, A 5" Cman on the work bench, a larger Balco on a stand, a Pony woodworkers vise on the work table and two drill press vises.

Now reading what Shiftless has mentioned about Workmates counting as vises, I have to edit to include two more. although they are not B&D Workmates, they are the same principal and made by Skil.

So that brings me to eight.

As soon as I donate them to the local Restore, I'll be back down to six though.

NUTTS: thanks again for doing what you do to make this the only forum on the internet I spend time on.

another option instead of just dropping off the Skil workmates is to put up an ad on Craigslist in the FREE section and wait for an email from some kid or guy that really wants one and he'll pick it up and hand you a big smile too.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your family!!

ALL: I started to ORGANIZE my vises and pick them out of dark places and buckets, but not sure I want to put many more on this shelving unit even though it can hold a few tons of them because it's next to where my bride parks her car every day. i've got a few and still counting.

cheers

I had to fix some errors in my inventory list, but here's what I have on the inventory. I'm sure I've missed one or more, as I found two just correcting the errors...

Less than $2K invested, average cost of the ones I have is just over $15.

I've bought and sold some, mostly Wilton and Workmates, and gifted some. Paid $155 made $1130. Brings my cost to under $7 average each for the one's I'm keeping, with 2 Wilton's still to be sold....

33 Machinist - Machined Slide
1 Combination
5 Gunsmith
4 Shop/Garage - Inverted "U" channel

11 drill press
3 mill vise
4 technician's vise - Pana-vise
6 woodworkers Vise - Bench vises

Hmmm, now I have to list all mine out. I have more than the 2 I posted in the old thread.

(1) unknown brand of bench vise (4.5")
(1) Craftsman woodworking vise
(1) HF drill press vise
(1) unknown brand of mini bench vise (2" or 3" I think...not sure where it is in the garage right now)
(3) Workmates (an "Original" from 2007, a "200", and a "300")

So, I guess I have 7...

Do saw sharpening vises count?

9 machinist vises
1 combination
1 post vise
2 woodworking vises
2 clamp on vises
4 saw sharpening
1 workmate
2 mill vises
1 drill press vise (only chicom)

23 total. About what some people pick up in a couple weeks of hunting!

edit: and a panavise =24.

I have 3 which suits my needs. Only real reason I have 3 was we broke a 6" Morgan at work and I was able to sign it out and got it repaired. I do take interest when I see a good vise for sale for a really good price, but with no place to put it, I muster the strength to pass.

I voted for five but i wasn't considering drill press vises or rock saw so that gets me up to twelve. I use every one of them. Three different types for the drill press and three for the rock saws. One woodworking, two bench types, one jewelers vise, one saw sharpening vise, and one small swivel type.

Shift: since this is your thread if you have time and want to have this a full time job maybe save a post for just putting the amount of vises each member wants to admit to and as they add or sell some keep a running total.

something like this:

Outlaw: 125 see post # for details
Wrench : 61 see post #

and so on........

I did something like this for a bunch of members on the weight loss GET HEALTHY thread that was sort of interesting and I'd say you shouldn't have to adjust totals unless there is a 5 or 10 vise change in the plus or minus after the poster's first post.

All: another courtesy pic of some of my vises cause i do have a few and this picture shows some that are now on other member's benches and i've added a few to the "little" lyon cabinet since this picture was taken.

cheers

Just one for now. A Yost 880 that I recently picked up for a good price on CL. Since I don't have a shop to put in in yet I am going to stop there. Once my shop gets done we will see.

Thanks guys for all of the input. We’re already up to 62 entries and the poll hasn’t been live for even one day!

Drives: Your idea certainly has merit and would be interesting to a few, but I’m not gonna set it up and manage it! :)
Anybody else that wants to take this on for any reason is welcome to go for it.

Drill press vises?!!! Didn't think about those. Adding those two puts me in a different category!

Are workmates categorized as vises? That'd be another two.

Shiftless, how does one amend their survey results?

Sorry you didn’t get all your vises counted. I can’t edit poll results but I’d say close enough is good. Perfect accuracy for every entry is not required. I hope guys don’t exaggerate on purpose but there’s no way to monitor that. Plus, as the numbers get bigger, I’d bet that most guys have lost track of the exact number they have. Unless they are all lined up neatly in one or two places, it’s too hard to count.

Yes, as described in post #1 of this poll, workmates and drill press vises certainly count!

I’m amazed at the amount of guys that collect vise’s. Everyone has to have their thing, lord knows I have mine.
My vise’s:
Snap On/Wilton on my bench
Drill press
End and small side vise on my woodworking bench
Pans-Vise I use for hobbies.

I have 6 after selling one and gifting another. I say I’m all set for now, but we all know that’s a lie.

I have 16 but I'm not a collector of vises. I have 6 mounted that get regular use. Most were bought because they were already attached to a table/bench I wanted or because they were going to be bought by scrappers and trashed. I buy stuff I don't need to keep it from getting on a boat to China.

That’s the right thing to do
Many of us need parts to complete projects so these vises can be put back into complete and/or serviceable condition.
There is a thread for vise parts if you have damaged and otherwise unuseable vises laying around in the floor. PM me if you want to learn more.

I'm going to claim ~12, 5 of them are Kurt milling vises attached to machines.'

Amongst other bench vises (Starrett, Reed, Wiltons) I also have a Record quick release woodworking vise, and a pipe-chain vise which I think is a Ridgid.

EDIT: I forgot about two, after reading Ganymede's post I recall I have one attached to a Steptoe-Western metal shaper and another larger shaper vise attached to a radial arm drill. They are everywhere lol!

It’s interesting to note that as the responses keep rolling in, the percentage of us who own OVER 10 vises has been pretty constant at about 30%.
