I have in my posession a Charles Parker Co. Meriden Ct. No23x 8inch jaw 60 pound vise that I can't seem to find anywhere. Does anybody know how much this vise is worth and possibly the year it came out?

Jaw is measured in width, not opening. That doesn't look like an 8-inch jaw, but I suppose the camera angle could be deceiving.

Picky: i have to disagree with Mercury cause nobody prices by the pound anymore. it always depends on size, condition and how rare or in demand it might be.

i don't think your Parker is rare and i'm pretty sure it doesn't weigh 300 pounds so it's not an 8 inch either.

since you are a new member i'll give you a break and not razz you about how to measure a vise. the measurement we use for jaws is width of them closed and not how far they open. I'm not a Parker expert but guessing it's maybe a 4 inch wide jaw. or how wide are your jaws? how much does it weigh maybe 60 pounds?

also if you want to stick around GJ for more than one price opinion you might want to put in your area in your GJ profile cause in some parts of the country that vise might be worth $50 cause plentiful and other parts it might be worth $150 so maybe that will help you if you can figure out how easy it would be to buy somebody else's.

if it's welded or cracked under that grey paint job then a LOT LESS VALUE.

Welcome to the forum!!

So often some one joins to ask how much can I get for my xyz and then never comes back to be an active member of the group.
I had to laugh because when I saw this thread I thought "let's go see who has a post count of 1 or 2 today..." You'd think at least one of them would just be forthright and say "who wants to buy it?"

It also seems that a lot of the time these people don't even attempt to try and find any info on their own, like its quicker to do a google search than join an online forum :headscrat

I believe this website is 100-percent responsible for driving up the prices of vintage, US-made vises.

Someone goes online to see about their "old vise," they find this place, they look or they post, then BAM! Off to Craigslist or Ebay with a huge number!

Thank goodness I'm done buying vises. A big Wilton, a huge Wilton, a big Parker, and a hydraulic Studebaker, and I'm covered.

Thank you all for the responses. I am a new member to this forum and have researched this for countless hours throughout the last couple years and just haven't been able to find the exact vise. It is a 4" Jaw with a weight of 60 pounds. There are no defects in this vise. Been hauling it around for years. Thank you T45, I keep coming across that particular vise on EBay and it's not the dMe one. I am relocated to Henderson (Las Vegas) Nevada from Key Largo. Again thank you all for te feedback.

As mentioned above, the ebay vise is BROKEN...hence the lead screw is visible where it should be covered by a slide. Other than tat, they look identical, both marked "c parker, meriden ct" on one side, and "No 23X" on the other:dunno:.

The vise in the OP is over-painted silver but it should have classic parker jaws under that paint. If would be of note if the jaws were not there; its hard to see them in your image/s for some reason.

How hard did you search, this one is on this site...

The days of selling vises by the pound went out with Disco...

I'm guessing the fact that they don't make American made quality vises has more to do with driving up prices than some website...

For example, please run down to the hardware store and buy me a 2017 Charles Parker?

Oh, no luck...? Hmmmm...

While you are at it, grab me a Hay Budden anvil for $1.00 a pound...
Oh, no luck...? Hmmmm...

It's called "supply and demand", our economic system is built on this premise...

People crack me up!

Take care!
Mike

Oh you'll buy again.---You just haven't spotted the one that screams to you, ("you're going to need me for that special project you've been planning").---And then you convince yourself, it speaks the truth.---Boom, number 5.

I don't need a vise.
I would absolutely pass it up at fifty bucks, probably even twenty bucks.
They aren't the good trading material I had hoped they would be.
I did buy an odd vise the other day for 85ish bucks. I bought it simply as a favor to GJ members(plural) who might have needed an odd part from it or the whole vise. It was based on a TRUSTED member here saying he would pay that for it. It wasn't based on my needing to sell it, it was based on him saying he would pay that much for one if he found one... I used his expert opinion to ball park. As usual on GJ, he didn't show any interest in the least once it was available to him.
But also as usual, many came to my rescue and told me exactly what that odd vise is.
85 bucks to the initial responder and to me, was worth the speculation. Don't think for a moment I have nothing but a hearty thanks for the guy who responded with a value. I'm just telling a noob that some of us play on different financial fields and some of us are medicated differently.
Hoarders hoard.
Users use.
Value is indeterminate.

The sheer number of people who register here to figure out what their stuff is worth would seem to belie that.

I'd imagine that the number of folks who find this website researching what their old stuff is worth, who DON'T register, is far greater than the number that do.

I saw TONS and TONS of block grinders, vises and anvils sell for reasonable prices before they started getting discussed in great length here - and it was only a short while between the two. I mean, it's not like US-production of this stuff just recently dried-up.

Obviously, correlation != causation, but it's eery how the subject matter and it's discussion here goes hand-in-hand.

I'm sure current eBay pricing also assists in this manner, but quite frankly, this site is in the top results for Google when people are researching iron they want to part with.

You guys blaming GJ as the sole reason for vice prices being through the roof are hilarious. You're the same people that buy a new jeep wrangler and on the first day of driving it say "wow there are a lot of jeep wranglers on the road!"

Not blaming solely GJ, but I certainly believe it has a part in the process.

You can't deny how often GJ comes up in search results related to tools.

Well, "If it's on the internet, it must be true..." I guess.
I prefer to live in the real world, not cyberspace, that way common sense prevails.
It's been working out well, thanks!

Hell, and I'm living proof.

When I was shopping for a bench grinder, I turned up my nose to the Craftsman block grinder that were all over CL for pennies on the dollar (compared to current pricing). I thought they were old, average stuff, and not really worthy of much attention.

When I started seeing the discussion of them here, how stout/sturdy they are, and how awesome a lot of the restorations looked, I couldn't find the things anymore.

Had I been quicker on the draw (i.e. been paying more attention to the discussion here), I would have been all over them, and contributing to their scarcity.

Vises, same story - though, I WAS quicker on the draw in that respect, and snagged a couple of nice pieces that I'm slowly going over.

Picky: again WELCOME to the forum and you'll find out there are a lot of great members here. Duckface posts a lot of negative posts hence him probably dealing with more negative members and WHY WOULD YOU BUY SOMETHING ON EBAY for somebody else without a Paypal from them first.

i know vise prices have raised since i've been a member here and maybe it's part of the THEORY that the public is finding out that OLD VISES AND TOOLS ARE ACTUALLY MADE TO LAST more so than me or anybody else talking them up.

i'm not a huge fan of Parkers, but they did make great vises for almost 100 years so you know they did something right.

how do you like the desert and not a bad place to hang your hat if you ask me and guessing you are not far from Lake Las Vegasl and maybe 80 degree weather today is about perfect instead of 40's and rain like here in the PNW.

Do not let the prices paid by hoarders influence you.

That's as simple as I can make the block grinder, anvil, vise scenario.

Don't let "non-collectors" discourage you either, the 99% of the rest of us on this site, it's what we do.The other 1% just complain because their stuff isn't worth anything, it's just jealousy...

I painted it with a rustoleum car primer then the silver. It was really rusty but yea they definitely look the same and it is classic parker jaws under that paint.

Thanks Drivesitfar, I just moved here two weeks ago from Key Largo. Lost my truck on way here towing it, caught on fire probably the trans caught because The driveshaft wasn't detached. Total loss. My wallet was stolen on Freemont Street Experience and my bike stolen on Sunday. Not to happy about it all but I just got accepted as an intern in Kauai Hawaii to complete the remaining Certifications to be Scuba Diving Instructor and then tech diving along with working towards being a boat captain. Feeling pretty stoked about all this. I'll be departing Vegas in one month to finish what I started and be doing what I love. Now I have to purge my belongings. Be a mindset minimalist and take only what I need, sell what I can and donate the rest especially clothes and blankets to our homeless vets.
