How Powerful is this Grinder??

Saw this ad for a 6-inch bench grinder, and the label says it draws 8 Amps! Is that possible for a utility type grinder? How many horsepower would you suspect this grinder is rated at?

At 8 amps and 115 volts, it's around 1/2hp. Seems reasonable.

Ex: check the block grinder thread because i think a block can be had for that kind of money in your area and they are one of the best grinders for the money i know of. also Tourqueman and a few others might have a restored one to sell you if you ask.

that isn't a bad grinder for $30, but i'm sure it would not be close to what you would like unless you just like the look of it.

That is one of the better grinders of that style I have seen, but unless you need a grinder yesterday I think I would look for a more traditional style grinder. The motor clearance and thus wheel accessibility on those is pretty poor.

Not quite, you are forgetting the efficiency factor which is about %60 at load if not lower. I guess the true solution for the reader lies in completing your incomplete offering.

I already have a bunch of grinders, including a few blocks, but that one caught my eye mainly for being made in my town (Geneva) and the amp rating just seems way out of wack for a cheapo grinder like that. That's nearly twice the amperage of my Baldor 1/2 hp, and close to what my Dayton 10-inch (1 hp) draws.

zkling: Yeah, you're right. exmaxima1 is looking for rated output which is different from peak load.

Normal running I suspect it's only an amp or two which is consistent with 1/4 hp.
