Hey all. So I'm working on getting the garage set up in the new house. I just installed a 100 amp sub panel just to run the garage. As I understand it the sub panel requires the neutral and ground to be separate and isolated which I did.

Now I'm wiring up the 3 prong outlets for my welder and plasma cutter. So I have 4 wires to work with. Obviously the black and red hot wires go to the side prongs. My question is the center prong. Should that be the white neutral wire or the bare ground wire? And then where do I attach the other wire?

That's the wrong kind of receptacle for a welder. That is an old non-grounding type dryer receptacle. You should have gotten a 6-30R receptacle.

You use the bare ground for the ground. The white should be capped at both ends or at least capped at the outlet end. I've done this same thing many times since I have lots of 6/3 laying around.

These are the same receptacles I had wired in my old garage. I just moved them to the new house. Been running my welder and plasma off these for years.

That doesn't make it the right outlet. But, wire it as Highbeam stated. I suggest you mark/label the outlet for welder use only. If you move and leave it for the next owner they may try to plug in a stove or dryer.

The issue with that plug is that its non grounding meaning the chassis isbt grounded and its meant for a 120/240v appliance NOT a strictly 240v appliance. Yes, it will work, but its not right nor upto code, if u care about that!

You don't need the white. You only use the Red,Black and bare for ground. The white is used with appliances that also need 120V. The plug and receptacle typically used for welders and plasma cutters is a 6-30 or 6-50 250V. The outlet and plug you have is a 10-50 125V/250V.

ok so if my Welder and Plasma have three prong plugs on them, how am I supposed to add the 4th to the machines?
