Of course...box is locked. But I want to control it. Means: If someone is touching it I wanna know it and punish him for that. Example: my crappy boss tried to steal a ball hex bit...why not electro shock him while he do it....or camera observation with a built in cam???

I worked with a mechanic who kept a 20" rifle bayonett on his roll cart, he called it his "service advisor tool" lol

SO sells alarms, they made a special maximum security edition box that had keyless entry and such years back. A guy I worked with had one and if your were a little to rough moving it the alarm went nuts.

Most bosses seem to think that they can just dip into tradesmans toolboxes on site also. That's why mines either locked up or in my van if I'm not right there near it.

Its never stealing, just enthusiastic borrowing. Often followed up by not very enthusiastic putting back.

Here it's totally different...people are jealouse because they have never seen so much pro tools like I have.

Same with service adviseurs...those amteur techs thinking they can just take tools to borrow their crappy customers.

Sounds like yo have bigger problems than something a lock or alarm can solve.

I;ve seen guys with bigger boxes buy a sevice cart, then load the cart with tools needed per job and lock the big box while away. It can or can not be the most efficient way of completing a time-based task, but much like a const. jobsite, if you risk loosing tools, a simple deterrant like that can save you both $$$ and the hassle.

Again, if you can't be farther than 20 feet from your box without the threat of theft or unauthorised usage, it sounds like you have a shop and co-worker problem, not a tool or toolbox problem.

Thus, you're only really treating the symptoms and not the disease itself.

Well, in bad economical times like that...you have no other choice...and trust me, with lil' bit more budget I would do my own thing. Small garage with 3 lifts...but without an big amount of money on my account you also get no credit.

Haven't thought that the netherlands having the same elbow mentality like germany. Anyway, normally I can trust the co workers...but the administrativ people are pure shitheads.

solves a lot of problems.

seriously tho, i had an issue with some of my wrenches walking off a few years ago, one of our salesman decided to play mechanic after hours one night.
i found out what was going on and confronted him face to face, explained to him if i ever found a tool misplaced, i was gonna stuff it up his *** sideways.
one thing led to another, president of company showed up the following day, i told him the same thing, didnt care who it was that did it, or if i lost my job, but someone was gonna be in for an *** beating.

salesman was gone 2 days later....

Anything that shocks could get you arrested, however, set up something that squirts something at about crotch level, and that REALLY stinks and stains. also put up a small card that says "this box protected by guard dog", and tell 'em the dog pissed on them...

I had someone steal a (very nice and expensive) 46mm wrench from me, cut it in half and break the ring end by using a 4' scaffold pole on it, then throw it in the trash.

After i broke his nose and cheekbone and knocked him out cold he was fired for theft and no-one in that shop ever had anything stolen again!

Seems like a common problem no matter where ya go. I always wanted to hook up a buzzer to mine. Simple pressure switch that completes the circuit when open and a 9V battery should be a cheap and easy fix.

What you are describing is called man-trapping, its mostly illegal nowadays. Think of a shotgun with a pull string attached to a door.

I put two bars in front of the drawers in my toolbox. they are held with four padlocks. I figured it would discourage most people from messing with it because of the time needed to pull all 4.

I seem to recall a device which was a sort of mace container interlocked to a security system, if someone tripped the alarm it would fill the place with a fog of mace. Without a full face respirator you would have to run out. Perhaps you can rig something like that inside?

I find this thread very strange. If your lock isnt enough to keep your fellow employees out find a new job.

Hook a small battery powered fence charger to your box, it's just a mild shock but enough to make someone think twice the next time. I know it's risky in our litigious society but in the area I work it would fly just fine, no sympathy for thieves in a small town.

Kinda funny I find this, 2 days ago I tell my manager that I'm stepping out for an hour or so.
So I lock up my stuff and leave I come back about 20 mins. later go to my box and open it up again. As I'm walking towards the front desk I see said ******* (I mean manager) walking towards the rear of shop He doesn't notice that I am back. Since he is walking towards the rear I stop to watch him. The guy gets to my box and just starts opening it up looking for something. I creep up behind him and yell "What the f@%k are you doing"
The guy dam near pissed him self. I went off like a bomb. SOB thought I was still gone.
I'm glad I don't trust no one and always lock stuff up. NO RESPECT in this trade anymore.

I have the same problem on polish guy has a 1/2" ratchet set and screwdrivers and doesn't think he needs anymore tools and the rest of my co workers have old out of date sub standard tools aswel. Iv had a 7mm spanner a 12" prybar a magnetic pickup tool and a pair of cutters all go missing all snap on too. Also loads of times iv gone for tools and someone has "borrowed" them without telling me so I go searching everywhere for them, it drives me mad. So for a while I locked my box and took tools as I needed them but its not really practical I wish my box had remote locking lol

Post it notes saying obscene things within the drawers might do something. It stops my little brothers from screwing with my stuff at home....

At work the service writer \ manager made it known that tool box issues are solved by the door or the suits in management. Management fires right away, so it gets taken pretty seriously where I'm at.

What if you were to wire it like an electric fence. They run off a car battery (we all have a spare one of those laying around). You could even put a battery tender on a "bad" battery and leave it hooked up. Then when you come to work, you would know to disconnect everything. Should be able to get them at places like Big R, Fleet Farm, Tractor Supply, Etc....
I would think that a quality box would have a good lock and that would keep a supe out, unless he has a key. The gov't buys my tools, and I still don't let anyone else keep a key to MY box. IMO.
Good luck.

at work it isn't a problem as they are the shops tools and it is only two of us working there. the tools are on a board and show up when missing easily.

at home, i lock my main box, rarely lock the other one. drives my dad nuts, tells me i don't need to. i told him its not to prevent him from using them its to keep thieves out.

he has at least twice what i do in tools if not more for sure. he never locks his up, just the shop.
even my truck's toolbox is locked. i probally keep a at least a few hundred dollars worth of stuff in there. i don't like the idea of losing my hard earned tools and equipment.

Ok. I'm going overboard here... But the OP asked....

It seems like you could hook something up like a wireless home security system, run on batteries. Door-window sensors could be placed on all the drawers and lids. The main control panel could be put in a large bottom drawer, and be run off of a DC battery of some kind. Then you could have a keyfob to arm and disarm the box.

Fake (or real) camera with a wire running inside the box will add enough paranoia to fix most issues.

Shocking will just cause trouble, not fix it. Might make you the "wierdo" at the shop and just encourage you being messed with.

Considering the investment a big box and its contents can represent, I don't think that is overboard...
