How to refurb some Proto adjustable wrenches?

I recently found a couple of Proto adjustable wrenches in my spare tool bin...I can only guess that I put them in there based purely on looks...I don't know.

Anyways...they both have some flaking of the chrome on the jaws, as well as some light engraving (initials), and some knicks/mushrooming on the jaw faces. I feel like the handles are more satin than chrome, and I believe the models are 712, and 708.

So what say you GJ? How would you restore them? Strip all of the chrome...leave 'em "loved on" looking? Re-coat with something?

I gotta admit...I do not like having someone else's initials (poorly) scratched onto my tools.

Yeah...I had considered tossing them on the "Pay it Forward" thread.

I have found that my tolerance for initials is directly tied to how much I paid for said tools. I have 4 Proto black chrome reversable ratcheting combination wrenches that I paid $20 for all 4 (they're $35.00ea new); and I find I don't mind the initials that are engraved on them.

That's a fair point

Stabilize the chrom loss first and foremost.

there is very little economic or utility upside to trashed adjustables, so maybe don't overthink it. there is not much you can really do to "refinish them" AFIK you can just stabilize them and use them in a non-critical application...

Just my $0.02
