Good information. Another way to save, as I found out this week, is some Home Depots will take the Harbor Freight 20% off coupons.

Some good info but there is NO way using a credit card is going to save money...biggest gimmick going these days. Just my $.02 is to stay as far away from credit cards as possible.

Sure it can. Use a rewards card of some sort as it stated, then pay it off as soon as you get the bill. Then you've paid no interest and you've reaped the benefits of the rewards points.

Just get it paid off before the balance is due, and it doesn't cost you any extra. I do that all the time with my Canadian Tire card. If I have the cash to buy something outright, I put it on the card, pay it off before the bill comes, and collect Canadian Tire dollars at the same time.

Absolutely! I do this, and clear about $400 each year, maybe more. Never pay interest, don't have to carry cash either. When combined with my BJ's rebate (2%, IIRC) I save double there.

Does anyone know if home depot or lowes offers a price discount for prior military.I just heard of that a few weeks ago from my brother in law he said that the secretary of state is now offering some kind of photo id card for prior military service and thought he said he gets a 10 percent discount on HD purchases.

I thought next time I'm at HD I'd try to show the cashier my VA medical ID card and see if that would work.....

Lowes did offer a discount for retired or active military with ID, but I don't know if they still do.

Yes. they do (HD) give a discount to veterans. I use my ID card every time I go in. Works every time.

I will drive right past Lowes to go to Home Depot because they offer this discount. Lowes will do it on Veteran's Day. Home Depot does it 365 and I really appreciate that.

I just bought a blu-ray player from Amazon with my Amex points. Free shipping too. I have never paid a cent of interest or a late fee to Amex.

I have an Amazon card. Get about 1000 dollars worth of free Amazon stuff a year.

NEVER CARRY A BALANCE.

I know it is second nature on here to be in debt to the tool truck guy so it would come as third nature to be in debt to everyone else but you dont have to be.

I see there are few who dont have credit cards. When there is a Snap On Truck handy, who needs one right.

The Home Depots here make copies of your mil ID, and take your phone number for military discount....no thanks. Lowes is 10% by just showing a mil ID, everyday.

I have been down this road with HD. They will give a "Veteran Discount" but you will need some type of ID card. Either retired, active/guard/reserves or a VA medical ID card.

I problem I ran into was I am a honorably discharged combat veteran with 6 years of active service. If you are actually one of what seems a rare veteran that does not retire or get out with a medical disability, you do not get any type of ID card.

So HD's veteran discount is not all inclusive. I even tried a copy of my DD214 and that will not fly with them either.

My state (Delaware) I recently found out, will issue a separate state issue "Veteran ID" card. So I may look into that but my DMV that issues it is hell on earth.

Who knows?
x2 on above post^^^^^

I used my ID card from the Marine Corps after I got out all the time at Lowes until some jerk cashier caused a scene saying it wasn't valid and didn't count. I left and haven't been back. I went off on the lady because apparently being a Veteran doesn't count for Sh*t, but because I am also a DISABLED Vet, oh that changes EVERYTHING, they'll break their back for me then. Ticked me off because all I kept thinking about were my buddies who went through the same stuff, but they don't count? Screw that and Screw Lowes.

What does work for them apparently is a card showing you are either active, retired (20 years) or a VA ID card that shows you are disabled.

I know even if you are not disabled you can get a ID card from the VA, it just won't say disabled on it. Nothing wrong with doing that as all it means is you are in their system. I do not think that one qualifies you for any discounts though.

My local Lowes offer military discounts everyday. Stop in and check again...

My wife went in a year or so ago and had a coupon with a sale price for the large stainless steel toolbox (upper and lower cabinet), then asked for another "discount" (she told them she found a cheaper price somewhere else and would go there), and then when we got to checkout I whipped out my military ID and they added another 10%... after it was all said and done we ended up with about 30% off!

A friend of mine redone his kitchen two years ago. He started looking on Graig list in our area and found a few people wanting to sell the gift cards that they had got for a gift, some he got for half the money, he said he saved over $1500 just by buying the gift cards. HE was always leery of people selling bad cards or stolen cards, so he had them meet him at the home depot and go in a make sure the card was good before he gave them the money. It worked out good for him.

It depends on how hard they look at it I think. I've been told the discount is only for people with a VA Card that is labeled with Service connected on it like mine is. If you just have the standard VA card, then it may not apply. That could be complete bunk also but I know that Lowe's will look the card over very carefully while Home Depot just glances at it. I was told at my local Lowe's that they were having a huge problem with people giving/getting the discount and now require a manager to approve each transaction like that.

I use credit cards as plastic cash, never carry a balance. With that I have the consumer protection, warranty extensions and fraud insurance that CCs offer, a cashback refund at the end of the year, and the safety of not carrying large wads of cash everywhere. Since so much of my shopping has moved online, it's the preferred method of payment. Make sure you have a no annual fee card and you pay off your balance each month. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Cool bonus? The companies hate it.

My Dad and father in law go to Lowes. They get there VA discount and tell me if you need any thing lets go shopping. On the otherhand if HD takes the Harbor Freight 20% off coupons that would better yet.

I've been saving money on my shop materials from Homer's. I was suprised to find them lower than anyone else around on osb and steel supply's. I spent over $2500 and they sent my purchase request to the "bid room" and they save me another 9%. They didn't discount everything and I can continue to add to the original invoice for 7 days from the date of purchase. I will be needing another unit of osb for my project so I am going to add that on also just to get the discount. Geesh I sound like a homer salesman. Never thought I would say that. LOL.. They should give me the 5k gift card. Never heard of the harbor freight price match. Great find !!

Lowes and Home Depot will price match each other's advertised sales, and then take an additional 10% off. The router combo I bought was on sale for $179 at HD, Lowes gave it to me for $162.

Also, you can buy gift cards discounted at PlasticJungle.com. Or if you get gift cards to Walmart/Grocery Stores, you can buy gift cards from other places with that giftcard. I did that when I received Best Buy cards (hate that store) and bought Amazon cards with it.

HD just changed their military discount in my area- still 10%, but you have to register at special services and then get e-mail coupons all the time. Seems fair enough. I just show my last current ID card from 4 years ago when I got out, and that has always worked. My dad has used his DD214 with no problems.

I do find it odd that people get pissed about not getting it or getting hassled about it. HD and Lowes are private businesses that have absolutely no obligation whatsoever to give that discount. I've saved thousands using it and just feel fortunate that it is offered. Ever try getting a military discount at other stores? Not going to happen in most cases.

Yes. I would have to agree 100%. That's how so many people get in a financial bind. Pay cash whenever possible. Some retailers will even give a discount for that.

To tell the truth I don't really see the reason to only pay cash, unless you just can't seem to stick to a schedule of buying what you need and then paying it off on a regular basis. In effect you are still paying cash, but have the added benefit of some protection in case of a problem and building on your credit score. I admit that many get in a bind with a credit card but they also overdraw at the bank or take out loans they can't pay on. I've heard of people keeping their credit card in a safe deposit box or even puting it in a bag and freezing it.

To: Brian Zeringue (Public Information Manager, Georgia Department of Veterans Service)

Subject: Home Depot's Veteran/Military Discount Policy

Here is “The Home Depot’s” veteran/military discount policy, along with the type of IDs needed to verify eligibility.

All military personnel and veterans are eligible for a 10% discount at all The Home Depot store locations during national holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day.

Additionally, the 10% discount is available to active and reserve military personnel, retired or disabled veterans and their spouses or dependent children, every day, upon request.

To receive the everyday discount, we ask customers to present one of the following IDs to verify eligibility:

· Common Access Card (CAC is a standard identification card issued to active duty and reserve personnel)

· United States Uniformed Services Privilege and Identification Card:

o Tan - Dependent of active duty member or retiree

o Red - Retired reservist and reservist dependent

o Blue - Retiree

· A VA Medical Center “Veteran Identification Card” (it MUST state “Service Connected”)

The maximum for both 10% discounts is $500 on a single-receipt purchase at The Home Depot U.S. stores only and cannot be applied to installation products or services, Gift Cards, special buy appliances or in addition to any other offers. The discount is not available for online purchases.

Lowe's established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and VA Recipients.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients.

To qualify for the Everyday 10% Military Discount, you must:

Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card.

Or:

Be a veteran who receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC).

We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, we extend the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe’s Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only.

The Military Discount must be used on personal purchases only and cannot be used for Lowes.com purchases, previous sales, or the purchase of gift cards or services including product installations. It cannot be combined with the Lowe’s Price Guarantee, or promotions such as "Spend and Get," "New Mover," "Project Starter," "Your Choice," or discounts such as Quote Support Program (QSP) quotes.

1 Armed Services — US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, or the National Guard and who are in active, reserve, or retired status.
2 Retired Veterans and VA Recipients — Veterans who have retired after 20 years of service and/or those who receive VA Benefits
3 Immediate Family — Spouses and/or dependent children (up to 18 years old.)

Always be wary of "no interest until" deals--especially at places like furniture stores, electronics stores, etc. They are often short term loans funded through finance companies not related to the store where you buy the stuff. In addition to the terrible terms if you don't pay the balance off on time (they often intentionally hide the exact payoff date and then hit you with usurious interest rates when you miss it), the finance company loans lower your Beacon score when they hit your credit bureau because the computer considers them lenders of last resort.

I'm not saying that Home Depot does this, but it's VERY common for stores to do it and everyone should be wary of this type of credit.

That is plain stupid.

One can't really be an active member of the world without a credit card. Self control is the issue. Make sure you can pay what you owe, and make sure you don't use credit cards to increase your standard of living. It is not rocket science.

Bad, or no, credit severely limits a person's options in life. If you never had a credit card, life get's much more complicated than it needs to be.
