i found a top box on CL. it was cheap and it looked like a S-O. i hit the road at 6:15 this morning. it was an hour & 1/2 away.
i got there and it was in a LOT worse shape than described or the pix showed.
but **** it. it was only 25 bucks and i wasnt goin' home empty handed at that point.
got home and looked and it was a '76 S-O. but by now i had buyers remorse:lol:
it was pretty ******, but the drawers slid OK. i thought why not just use it for a bolt/part/junk bin?
i could put it on the shelf w/ my other bolt bins, but the lid wouldnt open....
so why not just cut it off?
i tried to punch out the pin for the piano hinge, no luck. i just cut it out.
it aint pretty, but it'll work.

I cant believe someone would drive 3 hours for that.. im not judging - cause if its worth it for you, then that's all that matters.. but a $20 organizer would have made me more happy

honestly I shouldn't even say anything.. I've driven to Connecticut for a set of $100 rims for a truck I had once.. Pennsylvania for a snow thrower (I REFUSE to call them snow blowers, its so ****** stupid). if somebody has something you've decided you really want - its worth it.. Ive been sitting around all weekend doing nothing, so at least you got out and did something..

I LOVE it when a CL buyer tells me they drove a long way. It means I don't have to negotiate my price, because I know they're not going home empty handed.

$25 seems like an ok deal on that box too. I'd have taken it for that.

No reason to feel bad. I went looking for a box today that entailed a 100 mi round trip. Seller decided to sell it to someone else. Got nothing out of it but a 1/4 tank of wasted fuel and frustration. Leaky

I'm trying really hard to figure out why the hinge had to be cut off...
Cleaned up, painted and restored it would have been a really nice little box.

As it is, I would probably send it to an auction and hope to get $5 for it....

If you really have a use for it, and don't mind how it looks... Just fill it up and try not to worry about it...

I've spent more money on dumber **** than that for sure. At least you got a good nut and bolt tray out of it and got out and about nice and early. Hell, that's worth something.

I've had my share of WTF did I buy that for. But I've learned to walk away.

I've surprised sellers when I've refused to bite just because of the distance I drove. I've even had THEM ask ME to give them an offer. Had one guy say he couldn't believe I was going home without his tractor. I told him I already wasted enough time and money...no need to waste any more.

When I read a thread like this, I wonder: Why the f*** did the original owner beat the sh*t out of that box? How can a human capable of feeding him/herself destroy something like a toolbox unless they drive over it with a bulldozer.

It's just amazing what some people do. I don't understand.

Good find and even better save. Good for you.

What are you even talking about?

It looks like with a little bit of straitening/teasing and some paint (if that's your thing - it's generally not mine) it would have been as good as the day it was new.

I'd jump at the chance to drive a few hours, and even have an excuse for doing it, and literally get a better box than any I own for cheap, at the same time.... what I personally don't understand is OP going to all that trouble and then royally screwing up a perfectly good old toolbox. For all that work, why not fix it, and then....... put tools in it? Crazy idea, ehh...

Of course, at this point, I'd affix new hinges to it, but that's still probably just me being crazy.

I'm sure OP realizes this at this point, but I don't see how anyone else can really put that deal or distance down - sounds like a deal and a cruise, good in my book.

I guess you've never walked out upon a production or assembly floor with 150+ workers. Men and women. Welders. Tear down folks. Assembly folks. Maintenance. Paint shop with 3 down draft booths. Plastics shop with vac forming and wood shopr for making wood bucks. ALL with tools and tool boxes.

And so many floor tools, shears, presses, breaks, Do-Alls , Millermatics and goodies it'll make you head spin.

Most folks respect tools but many do not. Mod and make it work if need-be is the creedo here.

Think Hunger Games but with tools. Hahahahahaha.
NOTHING surprised me any more./ It's got that bad and me so jaded.

To the OP, good find. And gas/petrol is under $2 a gallon.
Have at it.

Electro tank i think would have gotten it to open, keep it!!

People on this form and their love for electrolysis. It's a fad I say. Submerging that box in water would be the dumbest thing he could have done.

A new hinge and a welder could get the box going again.

My point was actually that beatcad got a great deal on a fine looking box, and promptly ruined it for no reason that I can discern.

Don't see how the dude's a ****, sold him what looks like it was a nice snap-on top box for 25 bucks, I'd kill for that deal.
