The wife finally got the back child support that her ex owed. She gave me the go ahead to spend a little bit of it. I have most of the hand tools a guy could ever want. I also have a 120v MIG. I have a 5hp, single stage, 60 gal. compressor (the tank does leak). I'm thinking a new 2 stage compressor, or a used lathe, or an Eastwood bead roller, shrinker/stretcher, english wheel and planishing hammer. What do you guys think? Any other ideas?

You will get a great variety of answers from people who do many things and have varying needs/wants.

But the real answer is what do YOU need/want for the things that YOU do.

How about doing something novel like using it on the kid as it was intended?

He probably has spent many times over $1,000 on the kid out of his own pocket on household expenses and outings, etc., and now the bio dad has just started to pay, so the $1,000 might actually be his?

I used to date a woman with an 8 year old daughter (deadbeat dad). I spent lots of money on her. Didn't do it for brownie points either. I just loved the kid and wanted to give her a good childhood.

If you're depending on child support for someone's kid, maybe you should save it and spend it on the kid when HE needs something.....:dunno:

Start some sort of savings account for the child whether or not you have spent your own money on the child. Probably not what you want to hear I'm sure but that's my feelings/opinion.

The problem with a lathe is that you shortly need a mill right after :)

I might go with a belt or disc sander. If you already have one, go with a bigger or smaller one, depending on where you are. A 1" wide belt can be handy as can a 20" disc depending on the situation.

College fund for the kid. That may pay for one class at a community college nowadays, depending on the area you live in.

And hope he doesn't major in English Literature with a minor in Underwater Basketweaving whereby he'll become an assistant manager at a Dunkin Donuts.

Need more details. Was the settlement like 20k so you guys just splurging a little ? Or did you get 2k? Kinda plays a big part in how to spend. If you only got a couple grand.. It should go towards the kid. If you got a nice chunk and just want to treat yourself then I vote towards a lift!!

I thought if you get remarried child support ends.

People can be held liable for arrears. I know of several, and their kids are well over 18... never paid a dime, but are now getting garnished for the full amount owed. One person will be paying till he dies.

Ask me how I know... my fiance's ex hasn't paid support for the last 6 years. He left when their daughter was 4.

How about using it to open a savings account for him. Ad a little bit to it whenever you can. Don't tell him about it until he graduates high school or college. Be a good little nest egg for him to start out life with. That's what we did when my son was born.

XT: I bet you are happy you asked this group? you gave a little information on what you own, but not what you needed to use the new tools for. also not much information about how much money actually received which really isn't much of our business hence all the opinions.

if your new step son or daughter has been your responsibility for years and you've been paying the bills then i agree you deserve to spend some to upgrade your tools.

if i had a spare grand today to spend i'd buy a miller 211 grinder with their specials and rebate deals so i'd have a welder for life. then sell or keep the used one.

I'm sure xtremek didn't start this thread to talk about child support.
I think he wanted to talk about toys! :D

xtremek, what do you like to do in your shop?
restore/work on cars? weld? metalwork?

if it was me, I'd spend the money on something I could make money with. :)

I work on cars, trucks, and kids wagons or bicycles. And of course what ever the family needs.

But for the other folks, I guess a little more info is required. We did get a huge chunk, plus $20k (he was over 3 years behind). The wife is a professor (I married her for more than her good looks:drool:), so free college tuition. In the past 4 years neither the wife nor I have spent much money on ourselves. Any improvements I've made to the barn were either garage sale finds from my M&D (Mom's a shopaholic), or pop bottle returns ($200-300 a year). The plan is to pay off a couple credit cards (paid off the wife's last night), pay the girls back tuition (catholic elementary school), spend some directly on the girls:thumbup:, do some repairs to the house (and my arch nemesis, the driveway:)), throw some in the saving, and donate some to the church and charities. The money is coming from Soc.Sec., as he's claiming he's disabled:headscrat, so the money will always be there until the girls turn 18. If I get a tool, I want it to be something that won't collect dust, but get used. I like the life we've carved out for ourselves, the lack of extra money has made us become resourceful and creative, so I want tools that will help us do more with less, or do it more efficiently.

Drives, yes I am. It made me chuckle. These are our girls (no matter were the sperm came from), and I will do whatever I can to support them in order for them to become good, responsible, happy adults. That means not spoiling them, trying to treat them fairly, and splurging on them every now and then.

My last cheap MIG lasted almost 20 years, so I think I'm set with this one (that puts me around 80).

You sir, are a saint to take over the empty reins.

My ex knows someone who's ex retired and the kid is in his 30's (I think that how she said he was). When Deadbeat Dad got SS, she finally got her money, every last penny.

Preach it LOUD and LONG. You become attached to them, and it doesn't matter who donated the sperm, you love them, even when they hate you.

Focus people, the OP only ask one question. If you had a $1,000 what kind of tools would you spend it on. Why, how or the background of the money is irrelevant. If you want to start a thread about should you spend this kind of money, do so but be kind, don't derail his thread about it. Personally I would put the money in an account and just wait for a great deal on something I needed. Pay attention to what would make your shop better.

HoosierM, Guilty as the rest. But thanks for the great advice. That's giving me something to chew on.

PS. I kind of did start a thread, on step parents specifically.

Chop saw or used horizontal band saw? I've been cutting up angle iron and strap steel a lot lately, but I see some square tubing in my near future (custom frame for a truck we need).

You need to ask yourself what you would get the most use out of. How about a nice sandblast cabinet with a dust collector and a two stage compressor to run it? I bought mine used on CL and find it very useful.

Spend it on ME. My wife tells my I'm a child and I could use some "support"...

Tommy

LOL, aren't all guys that way?

I don't think I'd use a blast cabinet much, but a used 2 stage compressor would be a nice up grade. And maybe a pressure pot blaster?
