I just got one of these (Bosch GLL2) for Christmas:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it's really neat...but the supplied instructions are less detailed than I would have expected. I know how to turn it on and off, and how to lock or unlock the self-leveling feature, but beyond that I'm stumped. :headscrat

For instance, I wanted to hang some pictures on a wall. I mounted the level to a ladder, engaged the self-leveling feature, and aimed it to the height on the wall that I wanted, but it was obvious that the projected line faded from level in each direction. Based on that observation it would appear that I also have to manually level the level front to back, make it perpendicular to the wall, and raise it to precisely the height I need? Almost seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

Seriously, if anyone can provide a link to a website that can guide me to how to actually USE this thing I'd be much obliged.

Yes you do need to have it on the exact level. You want.
Usually if you have an outside drywall corner in the room somewhere in the area there is usually enough metal in the corner bead for the magnetic base to stick to
