How would you flash this?

I'm looking for some ideas.

Recent heavy rains exposed a leak on my roof. When I looked more closely it appears that there isn't step flashing on the wall-roof joint.

So I'm going to have to do some work.

But this spot is going to be interesting. I was thinking that the window flashing would effectively become the counter flashing over the step flashing. Ensuring there is a channel for water to go down the siding J. I could put in a kickout just above the window to divert water away from that spot too. It is likely the leak is from the J channel not draining properly. I dunno, need to take stuff apart and see.

I took off a window shutter - hence the wall discoloration. Silly place to put one as that window can only be seen from the woods behind the house. The outlet is a head scratcher. If I replace the siding, I'll nut off the wires and cap the electrical box. No need to have an outlet there.

Thoughts?

Maybe Clark W. Griswald installed the outlet for Christmas lights. Any chance there is a switch somewhere in the house that doesn't seem to work for anything?

Strip back some of the roof shingles and the siding and run Ice & Water Shield from the roof deck right up on to the side wall.

I would be inclined to remove the window and replace it with a shorter one and raise it up about 4 inches. Then redo the siding and flashing properly. It's really too close to the roof like it is.

This house was build in 1962. I'm 95% sure the roof in question was an addition at some point. The foundation is build with block and not form poured walls like the rest of the house.

The vinyl siding was added on at some point over wood clapboard.

That window is an old single sash, single pane window, so it needs to be replaced anyway.

Raise the window, raise the bottom of the siding, install a 1x4, step shingles against the 1x4, counterflash over the step shingles and under the siding.
By adding the 1x4 the roof can be redone at a later date and not disturb the siding plus it moves the turn out at the bottom out past the siding.
Even if you blank the outlet don't bury it. Major code violation.

When I tore down the old house garage and replaced it, I replaced one of the windows with a shorter one. It wasn't bad on the interior, couple of short 2x4s and a piece of drywall, some sanding and paint.

If you're not handy at doing this stuff, call a replacement window place and have them come out and measure. Ask how much of the work they will do, I'm sure they will wrap the window so you won't have to worry about doing that or renting a brake for one window. Is there any left over siding stuffed above in the garage rafters ?

Doing it isn't the problem. Convincing my wife we need a new window is. :)

There are 5 other windows to the left of that one that need to be replaced as well. Might as well have them all done at once.

readhead - Good point on the outlet.

After a winter like we had this past year and rising energy costs, replacing those windows would be a smart move. Tell her it's an investment in your house and they will pay for themselves in the next few years.

Add me to the new window group. Also, I don't think this is what you were suggesting, but unless you disconnect the other end of that outlet wiring you'll still need a box there. You can't just bury the wire in the wall.

Yeah - we've already done 2/3rds the windows. We where ready to do the other 1/3rd, but my dog blew out her knee. gah. A free rescue dog just became a $4k dog. She is 8, so she has some more years left in her.

The other joy of a house built in '62 is the attic only has ~r25 insulation in it. So too much to do and not enough time/money. Typical.

I'll see if I can find where the wire goes. There is an outlet on the interior wall just below it. Hopefully, the outside one is the end of the run and I can pull out the wires (probably not though). We'll see. If not, I'll flash that one in properly and put an access cover over it. There where a few other outside outlets that were not done very well. A few came apart due to age when I plugged in a tester. joy. None of the outside outlets had GFCIs on them. They do now, but for this one.
