SoCal: impressive family of cars and bikes. it sort of looks like you have a bedroom for them instead of a garage and as nice as they are i don't blame you for not having any tools hanging around them.

so you were in the auto business when you were 14? I was graduating from high school then wondering if i should play professional golf in 1974 and ended up taking a different path. would like to own a few of my past cars still like my 70 Mach 1 with a 428 cobra jet, but driving Hondas now.

it appears that you have done well for yourself and again happy to have another new member with some wisdom to share.

ask questions is you have any about the forum or enjoy the reading and share your wisdom and ask questions there. we have a good group of guys and gals from all over the world here.

cheers

Actually earlier then that, 14 is when I got a job at a Toyota Dealership my neighbor owned. I do lots of silly stuff now as I been semi retired for a few years. Mostly One off fabrication stuff. I try to make as many parts as possible in lue of buying them including car bodies, frames etc

Yeah I looked back at the cars I had and said, nahh glad I got rid of them or I would never evolved. My favorite was a Black Motion Camaro with a L88

Just bought the wife a new Black RS over the weekend

Heres what were doing in the shop right now, old alum body race car
:)

SoCal: do you have any pictures of what that aluminum car would look like all put back together? it looks like you are working in your bedroom, but with the cars you own i know better. cool stuff.

BTW i'm guessing you are welding aluminum and what equipment are you using? Tig?? will that also work well on stainless because i'm just learning how to weld. i could probably have you hitting 300 yard drives before i learn to weld if you play or wanted to play golf, but i'm still trying to learn even at my old age.

cheers and post up as many pictures of your shop or cool stuff as you like because it is your intro thread.

Yes bedroom your correct LOL Its the loft in the shop in the staging area until we gather more parts
I don't like to post many pictures of the shop as its closed to the public, we only do referral work.

Welding
Tig is easiest for alum. Just take your time and practice. We have several ways including an old set of WWII torches used to build fighter planes. Have not mastered that yet most likely never will LOL
We hand form the alum panels also the old school way with wood stumps, bean bags and hammers. We have a wheel but that's only for new stuff

It will look something like this when done, its a Ferrari 250 SWB

SoCal: good idea not to show too much online especially with what you must have. it's nice to have some space up out of the way to put a new project and one day maybe i'll have that if and when the kids move out.

stumps and stuff sounds terrific and puts a smile to my face.

I picked up a pair of these old Welders from a client that was closing his 100 year old steel fab business and i'm pretty sure one works and the other one might need a new home. is this the kind of welder you were talking about because it looks like a bomb or torpedo.

also the two guys at the shop that used these welders said they were there favorites and i bet there were 10 huge millers and lincolns they had access to.

cheers

SoCal: if i can find a guy with 3 phase power near me to power these up i heard they work great. of course you are not the first person to say they look cool and would be great to sit out in the entrance of a nice shop.

have fun with your projects and if you need any information on vises or help with your golf swing just PM me.

How many vises do you own and what size and brand? i really like the old swivel jaw vises and the huge ones but the Wilton's baby bullet might be my favorite on it's power arm with a clamp.

Yes I need a good large vise
I like them with an anvil end and also a machinists style

BTW
You can make a rotary phase converter with a old electric motor to get 3 phase

SoCal: thanks for the rotary tip and I'll have to look more into that when i get closer to knowing how to weld. as far as a big anvil on the back of a vise that isn't what they were made for and anvils actually are made for hot steel and that's why so many are chipped from being hit with cold steel.

if you want a big vise just PM (private message) me with your email and i'll send you a few choices that i can put on a Fastenal pallet and have one or two shipped to you. or just say you'd like my email and i'll PM you with it if you don't quite know how to use it yet. i also could include a 6 inch square 2 inch piece of steel to hammer on or a chunk of RR tie and both work great and you won't have to take a chance on damaging your vises.

here's a picture of a few of my big vises and a couple are waiting for me to finish my steel benches to mount them on. the smallest vises on the shelf is 150 pounds and i wonder if you would consider that a big vise.

of course if you want to find a vise on your own that works too. I've helped many members put an old vise on their bench that they might not have found with years of searching. i probably could make more on Ebay but i certainly like seeing the members smile and tell me how cool it is to have one. the one on the left went to a young member in Canada that restored it better than new and now he has a 150 pound vise on his bench to work on.

cheers
