Just picked up this big *** anvil off CL and do not see any marks, anyone have any idea who made it? It's 32" long and 12" high, weighs more than I can lift so once I get a hand, I'll throw it on a scale. :dunno:

take a wire brush or similar tool to the sides, right about in the middle. There is a name under there somewhere.

Hay Budden
Brooklyn, NY

TRENTON in a diamond shape logo are 2 that come to mind...

Excellent anvil. The "mouse holes" on the sides are good to have. That indicates forged and not cast.

Outlaw is right, it looks to be in the 120-150lb range, perfect size for a farriers anvil

If you keep cleaning you should be able to find the weight stamped below the hay Budden mark

Almost forgot: you ****!

That's the crappy model that's prone to breaking. To save you the grief, I'll pick it up next time I get down there.

That's a you **** if there ever was one. Nice!

Thanks FordGuy!

Did you pay the asking price or did you OBO him? Either way it's some definite suckage.

This was a first for me...I stopped at the ATM and got $180 out, put $20 in one pocket and my "offer" of $160 in the other. When I got there, I looked it over and made my $160 offer and he immediately said "no, $175 I had two calls while you were on the way over and they both said they would take it if you didn't"...Okay, no problem right? Well, I only had another $20 and no change, he had no change either so I handed him $180 and just told him to keep the change... OBO went the other way this time :lol_hitti He did let me look around for anything worth $5-10 dollars, I got the queen size bed frame for my girl's daughter's bed. All in all, I paid more than asking but still drove away like I stole it :willy_nil

It also almost became a Final Destination scene. The guy helped me load the anvil from his truck to mine and my girl and I headed home. The anvil was in the center of the bed, against the tailgate. We got on the interstate and took off, topped an overpass and all lanes were stopped up with a wreck. I jammed the brakes just a tad and we thought we got hit by another vehicle, the anvil slid like skates on ice and slammed into my back wall, that bed liner is great for loading but ***** for unstrapped freight... Be sure to strap your anvil down guys!

Thanks BC! There is a 6 below the Hay Budden mark, I can not make out the rest but will take another look once I get a chance.

Nice score! I'm trying to stay away from anvils as I've got enough vises to hunt down that I don't need another 'vice' lol

Nine:Nice find on the big anvil. i'm guessing over 150 pounds when you finally get it on a scale and a quality made one and brand too. did you try to bounce a steel ball off the face to check the rebound?

funny story about the anvil slamming into your truck when you hit the brakes. i usually let them ride on the passenger's floor board if i can to prevent that or maybe on it's side if i can't tie it down.

it looks like a great piece of gym equipment until you find something hot to hammer on it while you are deciding on whether to keep it or flip it.

Nice find. I am going to guess weight is 240 to 260 lbs.

No, way too small to weigh that much. I'd say in the 125-140 lb. range.
Nice find nine4gmc. It's in great shape & at a great price for sure. I was pretty confident you'd find Hay Budden on it with that narrow top & waist.

Don't give out your address. I might be in the neighborhood. :D

I didn't have a vise - vice, until I joined here and it took a while to calm it down. I'm trying to spread my vices out now so it includes blacksmithing tools, wood working tools, etc :spit:

Sat sideways all the way home :D

I have not bounced a ball off it yet, at this size/price I was not going to pass on it even if it. Even if it fails the test, I could use it for cold forming without feeling bad about beating a good anvil. I will test it later though to determine whether I will use it as intended(hot steel) or just a banger. Hopefully it'll pass and I can look for a cheap overseas anvil to cold form **** on.
I would have loved to put this on the passenger floorboard but it's 32" long!! Read below, I thought I could just grab it and put it in my truck until I saw it in person. Took both of us to move it from the bed of his truck, to the bed of my truck and the tailgates were the same level. I thought about making my girl ride in back with the anvil seat belted up front...but.... :lol_hitti

I noticed the guy put that it was 22" long in the ad. Oops!

Yes, I had to look at the ad a couple times, thought it was a spammer ad fishing for peoples info with a photoshopped over sized anvil in the pic. Luckily I called on it and happened to be first, even though it was listed 4hrs earlier.
Nice find.

I wish!!! It's heavy no doubt but with the "6" stamped in it, I'm thinking it may be a 160#

Thanks Canoe, now to find a stump big enough to strap it to. :willy_nil

Thanks for the offer BC, I have a few small sections of rr track and my scrap guy has a full length but has been taking his time getting it to me to chop up.

I thought it would be fun to guess at the weight. Along with guessing, I tried to reference Richard Postman's Anvils in America and at 32-1/2" long it fits the overall length for 250 lb as listed in the Hay-Budden section. A popular sized 150 lb Hay-Budden is listed as having a 4 x 16-1/2" face plate and 10-1/2" horn for an overall length of 27" I will be very humbled when/if it is finally weighed it is under 200 lbs.

I have included pictures of 85 lb and 200 lb Trenton manufactured Acme anvils as reference to change in scale as Anvil weight increases.

Thanks for posting rennebew and Dave! I just wrestled this thing out of the truck and into my garden cart to bring it to the scale. This baby weighs 254# on the medical scale

Nine: i thought it was a BIG UN. now to see how good your purchase really was put a straight edge on the top from end to end and side to side to see how straight the top is. also if you have a steel ball to bounce off the top to see if it bounces back into your hand for a great rebound.

if those are great then you get a Father's Day YOU **** award and if not some anvils that don't pass the test have either been in a fire, abused or poorly made in the first place.

also my other suggestion as a nice piece of gym equipment is even better now that you have a 250 pounder. better buy an inversion table to use if you are planning on moving it around much.:D

Now that is a steal and a half I'd say! I'd attempt a one up with my recent freebie anvil from China Freight but, well, there's no real comparison is there! Send the next gloriously underpriced anvil my way, would ya?!

Well I'm shocked: That thing is only about 4" longer than my anvil ("Mc's" with a Bell cast on the side) and its 2-1/2 X the weight! Mine is an even 100 lbs (unless my memory is gone)

Wow, I definitely would have lost a bet on that one. Going by the first picture, I would have laid $ down it was 150lb tops. But I should know by now pictures can be deceiving after the 205 lb. Athol vise (926) I bought a while ago. My jaw dropped when I saw it in person, as the picture the seller posted did it no justice.
Certainly not the 1st time I've been wrong. That makes it a really GREAT score.....congrats!

Good find Nine, the one I found was a Hay Budden with 260 stamped on the side. Look on the left leg below the horn and there should be a number stamped , that is a serial # and someone can tell you when it was made. Mine was made in 1902 from what I was told. like I said good find.

I was just as shocked Outlaw, first at my ability to carry half that weight to my truck and secondly at the weight being over 200#. This will be a keeper for sure...that is unless I find a larger one
