My dad has a Husqvarna 316 electric chainsaw he bought 10 years ago and hasn't used much. The chain seems a little loose and when we turn the chain adjustment screw it doesn't appear to make much difference-- the screw turns but the tension doesn't adjust much at all.

Taking off the cover to see the chain and chain guard, it seems the adjustment screw has some threads that...well, they're not really stripped but they're not as deep as the ones further down. Dad and I are wondering if they're stripped just enough to prevent tightening. (The tensioner *does* move if you adjust the screw without the chain or guide bar installed.)

Anyone know anything about Husqvarnas and how difficult it is to replace the chain tension screws?

U have to loosen the plate on the outside of the bar before adjusting the tension screw or it's not gonna do anything YouTube how to properly adjust a chainsaw

Thanks. We went to the local dealer and sure enough, the threads on the chain adjustment screw were worn and couldn't provide enough 'push' to tighten the chain. The screw itself does have what appear to be pretty fine threads, so I'm not shocked about that, though I'm not sure why Husqvarna made it like that.

New screw and adjustment plate, and a new Stihl 16" chain later for good measure and good to go.

Sounds like you may have partially stripped the adjuster pin by not slacking off the bar nuts first. It's not a big deal to replace adjuster screws and pins, take off the bar cover, the bar and chain, and there it is.
The bar adjuster screw, and pin, only aid in holding the correct tension while you are tightening up the bar nuts ( you still need to be holding up the bar and chain while you do this. It's very clearly described in the manual, and if you've lost the manual, they are online at husqvarna.com.
