Hi all,
Wondering if any HVAC or mold experts can help. My parents house recently started smelling slightly musty and they discovered black mold around the registers and on nearby furniture.
Their HVAC is one where everything is in one unit and a large trunk line goes under the house and branches off to the registers. No separate air handler.
So I went under the house in the crawlspace and it was dry except for 2-3 small puddles under the trunk line at the low spots. The round trunk line is about 2 feet in diameter and is metal ductwork wrapped in about 1" of yellow fiberglass with the silver backing - all taped up. Turns out the yellow insulation on the bottom of the trunk line is soaked. Apparently dripping to those low spots. The main water lines are right above this trunk line also.
Unfortunately about 1-2 weeks ago I was under there looking at the dryer duct and when I went under trunk line to get to the other section, my back brushed up against it and got wet. I think I remember looking up and saw the water line sweating pretty good but I cannot be positive.
Figures when I was under there this past weekend the water lines were dry. Even ran the cold water for a while and saw no condensation.
So is this an HVAC issue or a mold remedation issue? I talked to a mold guy and he stated that he is not HVAC certified and would have to defer there for the root cause, but he could, once everything is right, come in and fog the duct work with a product called mediclean that would kill all the mold spores.
My dad got a guy to come out that encapsulates crawlspaces and that is what he recommends (shocker for $4800), but in 20 years everything has been fine. We even had a ton of rain recently and the crawlspace is dry.
Anyone deal with anything like this?
