HVAC and mold

Hi all,

Wondering if any HVAC or mold experts can help. My parents house recently started smelling slightly musty and they discovered black mold around the registers and on nearby furniture.
Their HVAC is one where everything is in one unit and a large trunk line goes under the house and branches off to the registers. No separate air handler.
So I went under the house in the crawlspace and it was dry except for 2-3 small puddles under the trunk line at the low spots. The round trunk line is about 2 feet in diameter and is metal ductwork wrapped in about 1" of yellow fiberglass with the silver backing - all taped up. Turns out the yellow insulation on the bottom of the trunk line is soaked. Apparently dripping to those low spots. The main water lines are right above this trunk line also.
Unfortunately about 1-2 weeks ago I was under there looking at the dryer duct and when I went under trunk line to get to the other section, my back brushed up against it and got wet. I think I remember looking up and saw the water line sweating pretty good but I cannot be positive.
Figures when I was under there this past weekend the water lines were dry. Even ran the cold water for a while and saw no condensation.
So is this an HVAC issue or a mold remedation issue? I talked to a mold guy and he stated that he is not HVAC certified and would have to defer there for the root cause, but he could, once everything is right, come in and fog the duct work with a product called mediclean that would kill all the mold spores.

My dad got a guy to come out that encapsulates crawlspaces and that is what he recommends (shocker for $4800), but in 20 years everything has been fine. We even had a ton of rain recently and the crawlspace is dry.

Anyone deal with anything like this?

Probably lots of humidity down there. Poor vapor barrier.

Duct joints likely not sealed.

The crawlspace needs to be brought into the conditioned space envelope, or work done to make it part of the outdoors. It can't be in both places.

The issue has existed since installation, and has probably just reached a tipping point due to outdoor conditions.

The wet spots you were describing are between the metal ductwork and the insulation and does not explain the mold inside the metal duct. Get a camera that you can put inside the ductwork thru the register and evaluate how far inside the mold issue is. You can even remove the register and look inside with a falshlight. It could be just on the registers. Then also you can drill holes in the ductwork in the crawlspace and insert the camera and see if there is mold inside the metal ductwork.
The AC unit should be able to remove most of the moisture in the return air coming from the house if it is operating properly.
