HVAC Escaping Air Question

I have a question concerning my HVAC, and I thought someone here might have answer.

The attached photos (at arrow) show where 2 copper pipes are exiting the main body. When the AC is on, generous amount of air blows out the open spaces around each pipe.
Is this normal? Or should air be prevented from flowing through the open gaps.

(I am aware that the black pipe insulation needs repair/replacement. Even in a fixed-state it does not appear to serve the purpose of blocking any air)

Thank you
-Tim

if it can wait for down time, use chaulking.
or use duct seal putty compound.

I wouldn't bother with foil or mastic tape. Get some duct seal compound to seal it. Home Depot and Menards carry it.

Those are your liquid (small) and vapor (large) lines attached to your evaporator coil.

I would stuff the holes with duct seal as stated above, and grab some armaflex tape to tape up your torn insulation. Just a horizontal strip straight along the tear would do.

Just about every system leaks air around those lines. In HVAC world that’s normal, nothing to worry about. But if you want to seal around lines use some spray foam. Just let spray foam cure then your good go

Thank you all for your responses.
It was nice to get some confirmation from people who know more about these things.

I used some window putty (normally for winterizing windows) around the openings and it works very well.
