Hi all
I just aquired a Sharpe HVLP spray gun (model 253434). It was only used once. It comes with a 1.4 tip, and I would like to get a couple of more tips. I would like a 1.5 and or a 1.7 to shoot primer. Anybody know where I can get them? Are the tip sets universal or do you have to buy for the type and manufacturer of gun you have?

Thanks Ed

I haven't done much painting. I did a frame for the car I am currently working on. I am doing a frame off on a '67 GTO. So I am priming and painting the entire car.

Why would you not recommend priming and painting with the same gun?
The link you listed shows different guns when you click related items, not caps and tip sets.

Thanks

And I wouldn't have one paint gun to spray every thing...

Do you have one hammer: to hammer in nails at home, Machinic work, welding and body work? No you have a Claw, a Ball pean, a Chipping hammer, and a body hammer....

Hey Kona
I agree with the PPE stuff. I work on medical and lab equipment, so I know the PPE well.

As far as the gun and hammer analogy, Whuile you are right abou thte hammer I only have one impact gun that I takle tires off with and i used it to screw the lags into my deck and build a lift with.

I understand if you do it for a living 2 or 3 or maybe 4 guns should be had. I am only paying $175 for the gun but it is still a lot for me to spend. Should I buy a Crappy HF gun for the primer? It would make sensse to me that since the primer is the base that all of the rest of the paint is going onto that you would want the primer put on by a better source?

So please if you could explain to me WHY instead of an analogy I would really appreciate it.
I am NEW to this painting and am just trying to get info.

Thanks Kona

Yeah.. If I had a choice between no primer gun and a HF gun I would pick up a HF gun...
...

primer the gun isn't important because you are sanding the surface anyways.. I have a Grisly hvlp primer gun I have used several times (waiting on my Sata KLC RP rebuild kit.) . Most of the Cheap HF guns are good gun knock offs anyhow.

I would also recommend more than one gun and here's why. You can clean a gun til the cows come home but there is always the chance that there is one drop of primer or color left in that gun just waiting to come out when you start to lay on your last coat of clearcoat. What a rotten way to screw up your paint job. This very subject is dealt with in the latest issue of "Super Rod" magazine, the article also has some very good prep info in it.

OH and on the gun issue, I fell that I have more adjustment in the Fan control / atomization of the paint when a gun is designed to spray a thicker materiel. I spray up to a 2.2 on P/Filler if I need to do a good blocking... and just have never had a good experience with a do all tool. (cept for a DoAll band saw but that isnt realley what I ment... :) )

Hey Mike

Very Good
Thanks for your help.
So I will look into a less expensive gun for priming. Is it recommended one gun for Base and one for clear do to the drop or two of color that may be left?

So now the gun I am getting has the 1.4 tip is this sufficient if I am going ot get a different primer gun?

Thanks for all your help.

Look at what ever brand/ system you are going to spray it will tell you the tip size to use.

an drop or two of color in the clear happens often in the real world, nothing really to worry about. Might Make that first cup a lil' cloudy after that you'll be fine. Again, Ideal? no, does it happen? ALL the time.

Not saying I don't have a Clear Gun only, I do (sata RP 2000 digital), Hell I own my own Paint gun washer.. That ONLY my guns go into.. But I Made my living painting for a while...

Thanks again Mike.

Do you have any idea where I can get new/different tips for a Sharpe Razor?
Can't seem to find any online, and I wasn't sure if they are manufacturer specific?

Thanks

No primer through top coat gun. Trust us.

I would suggest using your Sharpe for priming ( if your feeling the need to keep it) and buying a very good base/ clear gun instead. The 1.4 tip will work ok for the small amount you will use it. I don't personally like a 1.4 for either base or clear or primer but that is personal preference.

I will add that if it were me , I would flip out of the Sharpe. Spend no more than 100$ on your primer gun and put the rest into a top notch finish gun. Sata and Iwata are great.

If you are on a budget, you could look to the Devilbis GTi Millennium setup for your base and clear gun. Its ok to use your base gun for clear if you clean it really well. Really, really well if you are using powdered pearls like PPG.

I have a decent primer gun here I could sell if you were looking to pick one up.

So the sharpe isn't a Good gun? The list on it is over $400 and can be found online for mid$300. I was under the impression it was ok. I really don't want to spend $500 on a gun. It doesn't make more sense to buy a new tip for the gun instead of not taking it and spending double or triple?

Thanks again for the help.

If you have 350 to spend on a gun...

I have to say you'd be dumb to buy that over a Sata / iwata off ebay....

not to be rude. and not trying to offend you just trying to keep you from making a mistake.

I would buy a gun with a 1.3 tip. most of you metallics call for a 1.2 or a 1.3. and 1.3 gives you a good clear coat.

No offense and your not being Rude. I appreciate the thought.
The gun was used once by a friend and he paid around $325 for it. I am getting it for $175, so if you can recommend a gun for $175 that is better please do.

As for the SATA I know a number of guys in the business and there advice when I asked earlier was STAY AWAY! Parts are hard to come by and there are a number of quality issues with some of the new ones.

So I am looking for a tip size of 1.3 for doing BC/CC, Thanks.

Since no one can seem to help with the tip and cap queston, I will just wait and ask them.

Thanks all for the help and advice.

I think that you were fed BS on a huge scale. Sata quality is amazing. You need to pick one up and see/feel for yourself. Parts are not hard to order.

You should maybe pick a few pro paint shops and go ask the painters what they are using and why. Sata will be everywhere ( I have 4 Sata's myself ) There are 9 in our paint department right now. I have only seen 2 Sharps being used professionally in my career and they were sitting on a wall ( replaced ) with better units. The ones that I have used were not very good ( have not tried this one you have with a 1.4 ) .

I run 1.3's tips in my NR series Satas for both base and clear. 1.6 in my Sata KLC RP primer gun. I have seen the 1.2 tips used with excellent results in the new Sata RP 3000's

One thing to keep in mind for the first while is that , while some guns lay it out a bit easier than others, as a beginner, the gun will be better than you.

I would dump the 1.4 Sharpe ( cost for a better tip/cap makes this deal sour ) . Grab a deal on something like the DeVilbiss Gti Millennium ( Comes with 3 tips ) or a Sata NR2000 1.3. Both of these can be had for a great deal if you are patient and both are capable of laying out base and clear better than you will for a long long time.

Yeah I read the "sata stay away" yesterday and got really confused. I would say 90% of professional painters use either a SATA or Iwata gun. Then I would say there is a 60/40 split towards SATA of that 90%, from my experience.

I would agree a Gti would be a good compromise for every this he wants to do.

You guys do realise he asked a queston about where to get parts????????

Everyone has an opinion on everything. And hog didn't ask for yours!

So it annoys me when you guys try to HELP when not asked.

HOG, I don't know where you can get parts for your Sharpe gun, but good luck with it and I'm sure it will be a great tool added to your collection.

Thats all I have to say.....

Don't care what annoys you .

Any Sharpe distributor will be able to order in a cap and tip set for that gun. The link I first posted lists all the possible out of the box tip configurations.
