Hydronic heat is running!

Not sure if anyone is following the build of my barn, that thread never took off, but, I finally have the hydronic heat running. It got a lot colder, a lot faster than I expected this year, so I did have to hire some of the work out just to get things moving faster. A few details, 28 x 71 x 14 with two zones. The east room has 3 loops, the west room has 4 loops. I used the Menards Hydro-Smart system for the boiler and integration panels, and BlueRidge for the tubing and manifolds. I did use Foumular 250 under the slab, and buried 2 foot deep outside. Unfortunately I am starting from a pretty cold slab, it was 3degrees when I finally had the heat running. Here is a video from right after I filled the system, and Here is one from this morning after it had run for 12 hours.

I know that it will be expensive for a few weeks since I have not finished insulating the east bay, and have no ceiling installed yet, but it is just too cold to work otherwise. If I can get the metal that is on the floor warm enough to work with, we can get the rest knocked out much faster.

For a rough break down of cost on the whole heating system:

Foam $2K
Pex and manifolds $1.1K
Misc Install $300
Boiler $1.2K
Integrator Panel $1.4K
Dual pump panel $1.1K
Thermostats and antifreeze $500
Having gas line run $1.4K
Plumber to get intake exhaust and run nice plumbing $2K

Add a few misc things like a transfer pump and it cost almost $12K to do this radiant system. Hopefully it provides years and years of quiet, reliable, comfortable heat.

One thing of note, I intend to keep the west room (the one with three doors) around 40deg over the winter, but the main shop (large door on the east) around 50degrees. I will eventually add a gas heater in the shop side in order to quickly replenish heat loss when the door is opened, but the budget this year is beyond depleted!

I just got done with your video's, looks good. Speaking from experience - if your budget is depleted now - trying to keep that shop at 40 over the winter is going to break your bank (although we don't know where you are at). Better hurry and get that lid insulated. Also, you may want to only send about 85 degrees tops to your floor for comfort level. Your feet will thank you for it.

Nice looking place/shop.

"Boy this has been one expensive project, it got out of hand quick!" LMAO

I am in MN!!!!! I know that the gas bill will be high, but there just isn't a better solution for working the tin. It has gotten so ****** cold in there. I naively thought I would build a pole barn out back for less than $50K, boy was I wrong!

I will play with the temperatures of the hydronics once I can finish the ceiling. Hoping to get that up by Turkey day.

Honestly you shouldn't need one. That's one of the benefits of this style system. Open you door pull out, close door, temp will be back to what ever you had it set at in under a minute. That's how my buddies shop has been. It's so nice not dealing with the cold!

Curious why it all wasn't done on an exterior wall to save some space and length on exhaust? Nice collection

Where in Minnesota are you, roughly?

I keep our 40X48 garage at 60° and don't need a furnace to bring it back up after we back out of the garage.

Looks like the same thing the contractor put in our house, one zone for the house, one zone for the garage.

Found and followed on YouTube. Building looks great! In the same boat, 50k doesn’t go far when you start finishing a good size building!

I am 30 miles north of the Twin Cities, and slightly more rural. It has been ****** cold. I used the common wall for the heating stuff because it made running th etwo zones much more ideal. Once it is built up, I intend to use that wall on the storage side for things like engine hoists, tall ****** jack and muffler stands and otehr akward shaped items, so i offset another 3 feet to accommodate. The extra PVC cost about $10, so not a big concern. Turns out every other thing is expensive though!

Thanks for the subscription, I will try to keep posting updates, and if you want me to video anything or explain what I am trying to do, let me know, just remember I am literally making this all up as I go!

Gearhead, we hope to have the ceiling up this next weekend, and that will have R-38 above it. If that doesn't help, nothing will! You are going to love it the first time you put your hand on the floor and it is warm!

RC Guy, That is almost EXACTLY the same setup! Must have got it through Menards since you are in Princeton. I am the other end of 95 just south of North Branch.

These guys are right on, Also in chilly MN a bit further north and no need for a 2nd heat source. I have been known to shut the system down when i need to have the door open for longer periods and once the door is shut the temp is right back up in a matter of minutes. I keep my shop at 60 to 65.

Peculiar, Subscribed.

I'm in Lino and just purchased the same set up from Menards. Hopefully I will get it up and running Thanksgiving weekend.
Please post any issues if they come up.

Thx,
Mike

MNMike, when you are ready to fill your system, I have a transfer pump and hoses so don't spend money on them! I am just north of Stacy.

So far the only issue I have had is some odd noises the first few times one zone shut down, and I think it may have been air working through the boiler, not sure, it has not happened often enough to note a pattern. It sure is nice to have a warm floor!

Nice setup, im just 5 miles down co road 5, and just north of jumpin jacks bar.

How is the system doing so far this winter? This week should give it a good work out. -30 will burn some propane.
