I built a few work benches.

So about 6 months ago I built the first long bench. It's 26" wide and 9' long. I had intentions on building another one to make it into an L shape but just got around to finishing it 6 month later. I probably have 40 hours in building all of them once you include cuting, welding, designing, sanding, painting, etc.

The second bench of the series is the one with the inserted toolbox. Instead of wood shelves like I built the first one I decided to do expanded metal. In my opinion it looks better. The second bench ended up being 29" wide and 7' long.

The comes the fun one! SO initially I was planning on just making the second bench 10' long with a 3' bench table that I could work on stuff while sitting in a stool, that later evolved. I had this thought of why not just put it on wheels so it can roll around the garage? That then evolved into making it a welding table/ work bench. (more about that in a min) Initially I was going to make a small roller cart for my welder then changed my mind to making a floating shelve for the welder. The problem was where in the world would I put the Argon mix? So I came up with the idea of using scuba tank mounts welded on to mount the tank horizontally. Ofcourse I had to make a hook to hold all of the hoses also. The final touch was adding a removable vice mount on one side and then adding a 3' side out that's height adjustable on the other side. This portable work bench has a top that's is 29"x52".

The adjustable feet for these new benches will be in tomorrow and the plan is to replace the OSB top with a custom sized 3/8" thickness FabBlock from CertiFlat tables. Although it's $1000 and I haven't ordered it yet!

What do you think?!

I have found that wooden welding table tops don't work that well.
Doesnt ground very well and catches on fire occasionally.

What you replacing it with?

Welding machine under the weld table is a TERRIBLE idea. BTDT. Gravity is a B! Welding machine fills with grinding dust continuously. Do yourself a favor and build a cart for the welding machine.

Benches look great. Where did you source those butcher block tops? I like them. Will be building myself some new tables soon enough.

As long welder well covered under table top it will keep cleaner than on a cart .
My mig lived under table for 20 years and close to new when pull it out .
multi use welding table looks useful, would get 1/4" plate cut for top .

Well, I learned something new today. I didn't know you could lay that bottle on it's side and use it. It appears to have worked out very well for you.

Liquid CO2 and acetylene are the only ones you have to worry about, everything else should be okay.

Wow I am really digging the welding table on wheels. Once I'm done with my shop remodel I need my first welding table. I know they are heavy and can be pricey even second hand. But making one like this is a great idea and may save me some money. Great job on it and the benches!

LOL the welding table is getting a weldingtables.com top like all the top YouTube people use. It’s a fixture table top that’s 6” thick and made of 3/&” steel. I’m getting one made to a custom size for my welding table. 30”x52”. I wouldn’t weld on OBS. The OSB is just to make the table semi useful until the actual top comes in.

As he other guy said, as long as it’s covered it will stay cleaner than if it was on a cart.

I agree! The top is getting a certiflat fabblock so that I can use fixture mounts and jog stuff up!

At first glance I thought you were re working some surplus work benches mfg by Formaspace. Lots of factory spaces use them. Same shade of blue.

Everybody works differently but I don't see what your shooting for. That 80 cylinder will be a pain to swap. My favorite spot to mount a welder is on an overhead shelf or maybe on a jib. Little red wagons work in a pinch. Two wheel dollies with an added third wheel is ok.

Any 1/4" or thicker piece of steel makes a great welding top. My ultimate would be one with an overhead hoist of some sort. I would add a built in davit crane before I put it on wheels. A jack raised table or scissor would be cool.

I like them. Was confused by the vertical legs that look like they are meant to rest on the floor, and the casters...but then read about the evolution. My only thought is to rotate the multi height bench long the back wall 180 degrees so the taller portion is in the corner. It will look better and function better so stuff laying on the bench in the back corner is easier to reach.

The legs are here now! So the roller casters I’ve been using to move it around will be gone in about a hour!

The racing kart is a project for the kids to play on. Lol

The benches are in and leveled! I’ve got to get some epoxy for the legs on the bench that rolls around. About to make a trip to Lowe’s now!
