I finally found a GIANT vice! :)

Rock Island 597 - 6" wide jaws and probably 100lbs+

I've been searching pretty religiously on CL and ebay for several months now for a big vice somewhat local. This was actually one of the first ones I found but he was initially asking 300 and he was about an hour away. We've kept in touch and he's steadily lowered his price a little bit each month. Tonight I get a text saying he's driving through my town and could deliver it. We settled on 180 which I think is very fair for a vise this size delivered to my door. No repairs anywhere, operates smoothly and the jaws are in decent shape.

Would I be crazy to mount this thing on my KRL7002? I know it's not really a good idea to be using my tool box as a work bench but it's a pretty sturdy box with a butcher block top and spring loaded casters. Plus after I clean up the vise and give it a new coat of paint it would make for a pretty bitchin set up.

Just the box I'd like to put it on. I have a big workbench with a SS top in the shed I could mount it to but I really want to give it a fresh coat of ultra yellow paint and bolt it to the KRL

Nice Vice, While it does look good on that Snappy Box, If it were me I'd mount that big of a vice to something tied into my wall.

I wouldn't mount it to that box. Not even considering the hole and structural stress issues that it may induce while in use. I think you will have to keep the handle at a fixed position or it is going to block the top drawer. I can just forsee being in a hurry working on something, handle pointing down, grab top drawer and wham. I doubt it the vise will get hurt, the drawer on the other hand Just my 2¢

I'd mount it on one of the ends and not in front of the drawers if I did it.. I probably wont put it on the box at all though because I definitely don't want to put any non factory holes in the box. Just wishful thinking on my part

Awesome buy man. looks like a very solid vice. If you want to mount it to something think of getting a metal stand to mount it on, personally that is what I would do.

I have always wanted a vice but people at the market either sell broken ones or want new prices for them.

zkling.....the stuff I've put my 1931 PURCHASED Athol through would flip that box upside down

and its bolted to a steel 30" X 10' bench with a 3/8" top fully welded to a 3" X 5" I-beam frame with 4 1/2" pipe legs with 1/2" gussets.....

I'm moving it back to the west wall and bolting it to the block wall.....because it moves around too much

I grew up with my Father's Athol, bought at the same time, bolted to a wooden bench with 5/8" X 5" angle iron braces lagged into the concrete floor below and at the wall behind where it goes into the floor again and up to the 2, 2" X 12" top plates....... over kill?

very nice vise. also under that yellow paint you have the electric company's tag they pinned on the Rock Island vises when they took over.

Bench or stand and if stand a pretty heavy one.

Sweet find it will look great with a new coat of paint. I am going to have to agree with a few others here, I would mount it to a workbench instead of the KRL. They are tough but it would make me nervous to do much with a vise mounted to mine.

Alright, I'll mount this beast on the workbench in the shed. Maybe I'll find something smaller to put on the KRL because it would be really handy to have a vise on there. It's a pain to have to walk back and forth from the garage to the shed with tools and whatever it is I'm working on.

Another reason not to lock it down on your box, is that you'll probably do some drilling or filing/grinding in and around that vice and the last thing you want is to get metal shavings and dust in your drawer sliders.

I have one that a client made out of commercial truck's rim that he used for his (mine now) grinder. not as beefy as Racthetman's but it might work for your vise.

Welding anything is out of the question for me. I don't have the equipment or skills. 400lbs without the vice seems like a lot of weight for a "mobile" stand but I guess it's required to keep it planted. I'd be curious to see how the caster and welds hold up. I don't have room for any additional stands or equipment in the garage so I'll just bolt it to the workbench in the shed

it's whatever size huge piece of metal that happened to be laying around at the scrap yard that day is why his stand ended up at 400 pounds. those wheels should hold up and I guess we'll have to ask him later.

one other option I've seen for these big vises is to make a wood platform off a beam that some garages have in their middle or one of the framing beams on the wall. just trying to throw ideas you might not have thought of, but it's not like you live where you have to go outside in -30 like some of the members do.

EDIT: one more idea is to build a bench that your tool box can roll under since it sounds like you have a spot for a box.

For a 6" vise you don't want it mounted as high anyways, it gets too high to work on comfortably.

I think y'all are talking about my stand. I'll clarify on the wheels. They only touch when it is tipped so that it can be moved. When in the normal upright position the wheels are about 3/4" off the ground. They are rated at 600 lbs a piece and only have to move it from inside the garage to the outside or about 10 ft.

The welds...the 20 pound sledge, that I furiously wailed on it with after completion, said they would hold. I got over 7 lbs of wire in that thing. Believe me, the last thing I want is a 70 lb vise falling in my toes because the welds were ****.
