Okay guys, I only use wrenches as a hobby, so I had never taken a close look at a Snap-On tool rolling tool chest. They had one at my favorite pawn shop yesterday. I don't know the model, but it was just a bottom box, quite wide, with 4 big casters that have the suspension built into them. I opened every drawer, and MAN, THAT THING IS NICE! The owner's manual was inside and it came in a nice nylon case and the entire box had a camouflage pattern on it.
DAYUM, it sure puts my Craftsman ball bearing Griplatch to shame.
The pawn shop paid $500 for it, and they are asking $3,000. 600% markup, ouch.

Was the whole box camo, or just the drawer faces? I know awhile back they did a Ted Nugent edition that was black with camo drawers.

Don't know how old your Craftsman box is but they use to be better. They aren't what they once were

SO boxes are much nicer. Once I saw one in person I realized how bad the craftsman boxes are.

When you open a KRL drawer there's a feeling that get's transmitted from your finger tips straight to your brain.

It's hard to explain. You just need to experience it and it sounds like you have.

P.S. The feeling get's even better when the drawer is heavily loaded with tools.

So that any debt owed via that serial # can't be tracked down? Pretty shameless.

PS.. if they had $500 in it why not offer em $1000. Something like that takes up a big chunk of real estate and most pawn shops I know don't have a lot of room to begin with.

Cash is King, make an offer with a thick stack of 10's and 20's, they might go for it. Pawn shops are they only sellers that i have met that aren't easily distracted by giant wads of cash. However pawn shops will take lower amounts for cash sales than they will for CC or check.

if its a kr or krl box the model of the box the the first part of the part# stamped in the drawer if it has drawer liners just take one of the liners out and the first few #s stamped on the inside of the drawer is the modle of the box

I am not interested in buying it, I was just impressed as hell at the sheer quality and wonderful smoothness of the thing. You had to slide a little dealie to one side to open the drawers, but I quickly got used to that.
I know what they paid because I decoded the tag. This was a Cash America pawn shop, one of the largest ones I have been to. Floor space isn't an issue, and they don't deal unless the thing has been there for a good while.
I'm pretty sure that the camo pattern was all over, but I don't trust my memory. I do remember that it had the most beautiful and substantial side handle. Wow.

I've got a 54" KRL upper and lower at home. Also used a 26" Griplatch heavily working as a machinist.

The KRL box is fine or whatever, but not at retail (which I didn't pay).

Snappy boxes are nice, but only at used prices. If I had to do it over I wouldn't go out of my way to source a Snap-On box, but would go w one of the more affordable alternatives.

For some sheetmetal and drawer slides Snap-On should be embarrassed to ask what they do.

but if you pull out some of the bottom drawers, there is the same label with serial number on it. I like that aspect. nt all of them have it though.

If I crashed a KRL @ 70mph would I be protected by crumple zones, seat belts, and air bags? Would the doors automatically unlock, hazzards activate, and a sattelite link notify emergency services of the crash and it's location, severity, and # of passengers? Would I be able to sleep warm and dry in it if the wife tossed me out?

why would youdrive a box at 70? LOL sorry I had to.
I have seen a pic where a 7022 got hit by a mortar round in iraq a few years ago and saved the whole tent that it was in. the mortar exploded in the box and the blast was contained in the box and it slid the box about 50 feet to the other end of the tent. no casualties. So they are a little more than sheet metal same for a car. they are engineered and not just slapped together. same as a car. time and effort by americans at that

an item is only worth what people are willing to pay. so all the cars, tools, or boxes are worth exactly what they are worth.

I hear all the time on this site about guys thinking that the retail price is based on the cost to produce the product. Apparently, these guys have never worked in marketing or manufacturing. Prices are set based on maximizing profit. They use calculus to determine the best profit margin versus number of goods they will sell. In other words, the lower the price, the more they will sell, but they make less on each; the higher the price, the less they sell, but the more they make on each one. They determine a happy medium and go with it.

Lista prices aren't too bad in comparison to SO retail.

Less than $3000 for a 56" in wide, 7 full width drawer box. They are an inch or so shallower than the KRL, but close enough...

I have to build a garage before I can even consider any tool box larger than I can carry in the trunk of my car. And as far as SO box prices, yes, they are expensive, but you also have to figure into the equation how long you intend to own it. A $5000 tool chest looks expensive on the bill, but in reality it's dang cheap after 20 years of reliable service.

I've got two business degrees, and I never used calculus for that. Simple algebra for the most part. :pimpflash

Don't forget resale value. It's obvious here that a used SO box tends to hold it's value really well. That's worth spending a little extra on the front end.

This coming from a Husky box owner...:thumbup:
