I had been watching this thread since it was started. While it was a tragedy that it had happened in the first place, I am amazed to see how outsiders have stepped up to help out. The pics of the "care packages" have restored some of my faith in humanity.:beer::bowdown:

Well, I just lost about 80% of my tools today, they are probably sitting in some distant pawnshop by now:(

I had my tools, along with my bosses tools locked up in his toolbox whilst we went to the shops for lunch + he had to go to the bank. Whilst he was parked literally 20 metres from the bank some crackhead smashed in the lock on the toolbox and took my cordless drill, my stahlwille 1/2" socket and spanner set, my new fluke 28-ii multimeter, my 3 crimpers that I had bought roughly 3 hours prior to them being stolen and all my knipex pliers, multigrips, ratcheting cable cutters and other bits and pieces. Being a first year apprentice, my tools must have looked alot nicer to the thief than the bosses rusty old ones cos all he lost was a fluke 179 multimeter and they left all his other tools.

Because it happened right outside a bank they have surveillance footage of it so maybe the guy will get caught, and luckily my company has a tool insurance policy so I should get new tools again without it costing me anything. My only worry is pretty much everything I had except my drill and crimpers were purchased online out of germany/america and if purchased at retail prices here in Australia, would be around $5000 (if they can even find them in a local shop). It would work out better for the insurance company and myself if I could just show them all my reciepts, rebuy my tools online and be reimbursed but i'm not sure if they will do this

Just start writing down EVERYTHING that you think was in the box. Be exact in your description, model # if you have it. They will find the cheapest fluke multi meter unless you say model # xxxx if anything is no longer available site a new model of better quality.
Ultimately you will be reimbursed however the policy states.

And I do feel your pain, I am glad mine burned as I would not want the hatred for the thief eating me up.

soooo-did the insurance company ever het this settled with you ??:headscrat

Not yet, and unfortunately the bottom line is that I will only get 70-90% of total replacement cost out of them. My only other recourse is to sue the agency that sold the policy, and I have been advised that I will most likely loose.

i hate to here it but ALL insurance companies have their crooked side

Well I received two take it or leave it options today one option was 75% of hand tools and 60% of power tools, and a supplemental policy if I show receipts. OR 75% of everything with NO supplemental adjustments.

What percentage would the supplemental policy pay? Would it be more than an additional 15% on the power tools?

I leave it lay on the table and take the f*&ks to court........

I'm guessing the 75% number puts them up against some imaginary maximum payout number, basically saying they won't pay anymore tha "X" regardless of how much you lost??

is the 75 percent if you just take the offer?
and the supplemental if YOU buy and they pay you the total of the receipts?

IF they pay you

I always wondered how they expect you to show receipts after a fire. You'd think that if you showed them a melted wrench and then showed 10 ended auctions for the same wrench on e-bay, that they could somehow get the value of "replacement".

Good luck! Keep fighting!

biggest question is do you have the money to spend and can afford to spend it and then wait how long for them to repay you?

No I cannot.
I have been unemployed 2 years now. I HAD a great deal of pride in the fact that I HAD enough tools to fix anything I have. The whole process has been very emasculating.

Another packet of joy arrived today! A plethora of adaptors and universal joints. 2 spark plug sockets, 2 nail sets, a small magnetic pick up tool exactly like one that was fried. A nice long ¼ extension along with a flex extension. A nice USA feeler gauge and a ¼” drive screwdriver handle, some cool vintage conversion charts. A set of metric combo ignition wrenches all packaged with two heavy-duty shop rags as the cushioning agent! WOOHOO! Thanks go to a member of the other garage forum for this package. THANK YOU!!!!

Did we ever find out the cause of fire? I know he was holding back but I don't feel like reading.

Once we have received a settlement I will reveal what I know about the cause of the fire.

Once again I am having a bit more **** with my insurance co. I determined yesterday that one of my Milwaukee grinders must have been in the fire. The adjuster is giving me **** about adding it.

I had to go to the post office to sign for this, it would have came Saturday but we were volunteering at the food bank. Once again I am shocked at the generosity of the people in the tool community. Someone on the other forum went nuts at Harry Epstine's and maybe TR tools. 1st up is a 20 pc tool roll of WILDE chisels, punches, long taper centering tools. In the second photo is a WILDE drift set, 3 WRIGHT U-joints, the nicest USA made feeler gauge I have ever seen. A Milton air chuck, magnetic pickup tool and inspection mirror! The hand chisel set is every thing you would ever need. I don’t think you can find a bore indestructible tool than WRIGHT. I am amazed and truly stunned once again.

After a slightly successful morning at garage sales I returned to find this in a package waiting for me. A generous member of the garage journal sent this to me. It will be nice to use a multi meter that actually works! WOOHOO! THANK YOU!

FYI on the settlement we will be hearing from the adjuster boss on Tuesday. I threatened to file a formal grievance and I accused the insurance agency of not acting in good faith.

PM sent. I am down to more specialized tools that I am still missing. I have the basics covered. I received a ton of nice stuff and I did a little bit of damage on the credit card at Sears early on.:shocking:

The lifetime of tools thing really hit hard for about a month. About a week after my fire that Amish family in Pennsylvania lost 7 of 8 kids in a house fire. At that moment I realized I lost nothing compared to that family. It really put it all into perspective. It still took a while to get over it though. The worst of it is the insurance co jacking me around. The first loss statement was obscene; they would put something with “light duty” in the title to replace something I described as “industrial”. The second statement was 33% higher that’s how bad they cheap schooled me.

BTW G00SE, welcome to the forum!

I made that claim against my AGENT, not the adjuster. I called the ADJUSTER slothful to his boss.

I AM HOPING TO GET THERE ATTENTION FROM ALL THIS.:shocking:

I'm not sure how it is in your state, but when my wife was an adjuster, the LAST thing she wanted was a complaint filed against her with the state insurance regulators as it required a written response, etc.

I believe you posted that a wile back. I actually copied what you and others posted into a word document, and went thru them all.
In my Email to the adjuster I put a hyperlink to the PDF complaint form from the state. A lawyer who used to work for the insurance co I am dealing with told me what to do. I am trying to accomplish what he is saying to do. The best I can hope for is 90% of what was lost.

any updates?

We are close to getting a partial settlement, probably next week. I have started ordering tools. We had a small tornado come thru the front yard, and I have several trees down. Given the **** with the insurance co now I am hesitant to see if they will cover it. So I went out and bought two new Stihl chainsaws.
I am thinking of wrighting up a guide to how to cover yourself with an insurance co. I still wont be able to disclose everything till it is over.

Glad to hear that you may be coming up on some closure from the insurance company. My FIL was in insurance & investments for 20+ years so i seem to think that we have good coverage, but my homeowners renewal just came in the mail this week so I have some questions to ask per your situation and might even call around for some new quotes too just to see what else is out there.

Please PM me that list of tools you still require, not sure what I have here that may help you, but I've got 2 brothers (one of which is an asst. fire chief @ a local FD) that have tons more tools than I. Maybe i'll be able to help you out in some way!

I got my tools last week and was very disappointed to say the least. My german-made Stahlwille 1/2" socket set was replaced with a 3/8" Stanley socket set, how does that work!?! Same deal with my screwdrivers, replaced with crappy chinese made ones and they aren't even 1000V VDE insulated. Spanners, again expensive german made stahlwille, and vintage Australian made sidchrome replaced with no-frills Chinese spanners in less comprehensive sizes, from 10mm-24mm instead of 6mm-30mm and no imperial spanners

The only thing I recieved that was half decent were Channel-lock brand pliers, multigrips etc. They are good but I still prefer my old Knipex/NWS pliers and especially multigrips. Channel-locks are cheaper than knipex/nws as well. and my Fluke 28ii multimeter was replaced with a fluke laser-beam thermometre thing:headscrat. My boss also recieved a fluke thermometre instead of a multimeter.

I rang up and complained, as the policy clearly states that my tools will wherever possible be replaced with identical items. In this case, they were unable to find anywhere that would sell any of the stuff i had lost so it had been replaced with "comparable goods". I again pleaded with them to just reimburse me for the amounts paid as per my reciepts but no that would just be to easy and sensible to do. I have to go out, find a business who will sell the tools here in Australia, and send them the bill.

So the owner of a small local independant toolshop now loves me. I had a good chat with Greg, and being a top bloke that he is, he will go out of his way and arrange for all my tools to be special ordered in. He even gave me his card with his email, homephone and everything written on it. He rang me today and said he could get my stahlwille socket/spanners for $1950 and even offered me a discount, but I told Greg not to discount himself, just send me the bill in full and I'll pass it on.

I hope you make out well in the end! I cant believe how much of an ordeal this has been. I have added items 4 times and I still keep remembering stuff lost. I just want it over with.
I will be having long talks with a couple independent agents to make sure my new coverage is expectable.

We had a small tornado come thru the front yard, and I have several trees down.

We just had this conversation this week on our message board at work after some severe thunderstorms in the area blew down a bunch of trees.
I can tell you that most insurance companies will not cover damaged tree removal. IF the tree fell on your house the will cover the removal from your house, and damages to your house but that is all.
The tornado at our house in May of '09 knocked down 30 trees on our property, not a damn one of them hit the house. I sepnt nearly $1000 out of pocket to have a couple of them completely dropped and to chip all of our brush. My wife and I still haven't finished all the clean up.

Yeah I'm confident I will be able to replace everything except a few of the tools from the 70's that were from my dad, which I accept can't be replaced by the insurance company. The stupid thing is they are going to pay about 3 times more than the tools are worth, all because they refuse to have anything bought from overseas/online, everything must come from a local supplier. I have priced up the Knipex/nws pliers and they range from $105 to $310. I paid between $18 and $57 for them + shipping. Then people wonder why insurance premiums go up, ofcourse they will if the insurance company are just stupid with their payouts.

I know someone who had his 6 month old, $60,000 car written off because his front windshield was smashed by a brick. They sold it at auction to some lucky ******* for $20,000 below its value as a repairable writeoff. All due to them not wanting to get sued if he cuts himself on a bit of glass, or if there is glass lodged in the fan/aircon system that could be a safety hazard. Its a complete joke.

Another donation package arrived today. A vintage craftsman breaker bar is awesome, I love vintage craftsman! Metal selector ¼ Cman. I always wanted one of the ratchet attachments for a breaker bar (proto goodness). SK Sparta ratchet, extension and spark plug socket. Proto ½ speeder and 10” adjustable, wow! The miniature Eklind hex keys are cool too! The bronze Herbrand hammerhead is cool as well. 2 bit holder screwdrivers one is ratcheting. And a Case hat for my son.

Sorry for the horrific picture I am going to buy a new camera today or tomorrow.
