A shallow 6 point 3/8" drive metric socket set! I own a deep 6 and a shallow 12point so I have a $100 or so budget who do y'all recommend? Is gear wrench still doing that bogo deal on the socket sets?

I'd look at Gearwrench. If you have Advance Auto Parts near you, they do lots of great deals on tools.

I like my gearwrench sockets. Very good value for the quality.

Lots of good choices imo. Snap On would be my first choice. Or step down to Williams if you don't care about the fit and finish.

If you don't plan to use them on a regular basis I'd probably step down to something like a US made Craftsman.

There is also Gearwrench which is decent as well. I do prefer my US made Craftsman sockets to them, but I don't have any real complaints about the Gearwrench's either.

Save your money 6pt are a pain sometimes specially if you are using a breaker bar a good 12pt is all you need they grip just fine. Check the hot deals thread they are still there if you want the gear wrench look for link.

The world got by for decades with 12 pt being the norm, why the need for them now; especially when you never needed them in the past? Spend the hundred bucks on ratchets or extensions or a swivel set or a couple good bottles of sour mash.

In the old days, bolts were tightened until they were tight. Now we have TTY and a bunch of other ******* fasteners that require 10 times the breakaway torque that a normal fastener should. 6 point has the best chance of removing a fastener.

Snap On is good. But if you want to go cheaper. Maybe Wright. But I'd really suggest SK as well. I've always been very satisfied with SK. I personally do not own a whole lot of Williams sockets but I've been satisfied with them as well.

Cripe was selling Williams made Kobalt USA socket sets in both 6 and 12pt in metric. I got a few sets as extras as I have Williams USA in my main box. That would be my first go to for best value, after that look to the usual suspects Williams SK etc.

12 points are more likely to round the corners of a bolt. Especially if the corners have started to round. So 6 pt. sockets do have their place.

If he has a modern 12 point sockets (Bonney Loc-Rite, Wright Drive, Snapp's Flank Drive, etc), rounding a fastener is very low. Put a 25 year old Bonney on a fastener and see how far in from the corner it is biting the flat....far enough in that it isn't going to round the fastener.

Furthermore, if he wants the 6 pt because I wants to match his deep set's 6 pt and waste money, fine, buy a Snap On or Wright or SK and be done with it. However, it seems to me by reading the first post, he just "noticed" by looking, that his set don't match each other in how many points they have (maybe he should get the same brand as the 6point set so they match each other :D)....so why waste your money on something not really needed when he could use it to upgrade something else?

Those Williams sockets looked reasonably priced for Made in USA. Good deal! Thanks for sharing the link.

Just the opposite ! I got rid of all of my 12 point sockets years ago ! I even bought a second set of combination wrenches that have 6 point box ends.

For larger bolts (> 3/4 ?) 12 point is fine.

You should be able to get a set of older Craftsman 3/8" sockets for <$20. Enjoy the left overs on something else.

if you are interested in something new:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/322296395078

a dewalt set. dont know who makes it for them, but it is a set of fractional and metric 3/8" shallow sockets with a ratchet. they are asking 38$, OBO. offering 20% or 25% less will likely be accepted. i have dealt with this seller before, the do a great job, and ship quickly.

seems like a reasonable set . . . .

Impact guns put a different load on the socket and fastener.

But there are 12 point impact sockets because 12 point bolts have become more common in the past couple of decades. I'm only guessing that they haven't become more common because you must use a 12 point socket on them, whereas a hex fastener can take either a 6 or 12.

But it bears repeating, the contact points on 12 point sockets above a certain size are probably about (or are) the same as a 6 point socket. If the fit is poor or the fastener is rusted a 6 point will be less likely to round off, but on a clean fastener I don't notice a difference.

My 3/8 metric sockets are 12pt shallow and 6 pt. deep as well. This had never been an issue for me but recently I had been looking to add a 6pt shallow set. After thinking it over though I have decided to buy the Snap On semi deep set in 6pt instead. It seems like a lot of guys swear by these. So I figure I will have "shallower" 6 pt sockets and add a new length option at the same time. Primary reason for this decision for me was also that I found they can be had regularly on Ebay for not much more $100.

I'm happy for you that don't own any 12 point sockets (actually, I don't really care, sorry). And you probably don't own any 12 point wrenches or use them either..........

And why do the typical 3/4" & 1" drive chrome sockets comes as 12 point? There isn't that many 12 point 1.5" fasteners out there....so I guess your reasoning isn't that good after-all. Try again some other time......:D

Yes , you find a better way to spend $100 - you let us know.

Here, pics on page 2 -

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=321931

I am gonna order this I have mostly hf and cheapie sockets so gear wrench is a step up for me lol

I noticed when I was doing rod bearings I usually use deep sockets for whatever reason and wanted to just be a little closer to what I was working on and grabbed the 12pt ones.....I have in the past used 12pt but from reading on this site it seemed that they were more likely to round out fasteners plus I'm a check the box kind of guy and have just recently gotten into tools again after a 6 year stretch after I had my tools stolen where I had like a 11/16" socket two screw drivers and an adjustable wrench because I wouldn't let myself "waste" money on tools

Here is what the socket drawer looks like now
