Hey guys I am going to build a heavy duty work bench out of wood and would like to hear some recommendations on a good value saw. I have little to no wood working experience so I do not need pro grade equipment. What do you guys think, like etc?

If that's all your doing go rent one.
If you're set on buying, Milwaukees have a five year warranty and are damn nice.

I think that it would be worth buying to have for other things in the future. Where would one rent one from?

Used 12" non sliding would be a great low-mid level DIY saw to start with. If you dont like the idea of used you can find a deal on any major brand 10/12" non sliding for cheap.

I really like www.bigskytool.com, they have several major brands and also sell excellent refurbished equipment.

I have a hitachi12" non sliding compound. I bought it after using a ryobi 10" for years. I only upgraded b/c I was installing taller baseboard. Lowes has a hitachi on Black Friday special for like a 100 bucks or something crazy.

Baja: check Craigslist for an old Makita 10 inch chop saw. I've owned one for 30 years and it still does the job of cutting wood less than 6 inches wide and i can do 2 x 8's if needed. I've loaned it out to friends, accidently left it outside overnight and we have plenty of moisture here in the Pacific NW and it won't die. i bet you can pick one up for $50 or so and with it being a 10 inch you can find blades pretty cheap if you need one.

now if you are going to spend a bit of money i'm not sure which brand to get, but i'd buy a 14 inch compound so i could do some of the more complicated cuts.

if you were closer i'd loan you my Makita for a few days no charge if you agreed not to leave it outside.

Happy Thanksgiving

Sears has a sale for today ( thanksgiving ) fri, sat.. Craftsman 10" compact radial arm saw, meaning rails mounted up front, with the saw sliding on them, and comes with a free stand.. I think it's like $220.. Saw is great - I was really impressed with it. Friend from work just bought it a week ago with a different stand.

Don't buy a craftsman. Stick with the bigger names, Hitachi, Makita, Dewalt. Anything else is just a copy and not as good and likely the same price.

Miter saw. Workbench. Value. Not pro equipment.

I read that as: functional, gets me through this project, and cheap.

I'd look at a Ryobi 10" or a Hitachi 10".

I've had good luck with my 10" Ryobi. I think it was $100 or so. Survived being submerged in 3 ft of sewer water when our basement flooded. Hosed it off, shot WD40 all over the thing and it's got some surface rust but works fine. Used it to finish our basement (after fixing the sewer) and a bunch of stuff at the new place. Can't really complain about that and if it died tomorrow it would owe me nothing!

I'm assuming you meant miter saw...chop saws are for metal.

I really like my 12" DeWalt, the basic one.

You're sure about that? I bought a Rockwell 10" chop saw in the mid 70's when that was the only make and model out.

The black button on the handle is a brake. Everyone I know since then has called the original a 'chop saw'.

Now I've never heard anyone say, "compound sliding chop saw," but a single action miter saw is a chop saw.
