I was at my local Lowes for some items and I alway walk through the hardware section. An employee was wheeling some rolling tool chests in and I asked him why they were on clearance. He said a big boss had come in and asked the manger why these chests were up on top stock still in the boxes and the mangers reply was no one had interest in them. Of course the big boss said how could they if they can't see it.

Anyway the employee brings it down and its last years model so they build it and discount it. Had a small ding in the rear corner so they took another 10% and with my veteran discount I am out the door for a song. Did I need it well..... you can never have enough storage space. The thing is it has a foam insert for the top. well I have a solid core door I had cut for an old workbench top that I took apart.

My question is do I just drill and screw it on the Kobalt box and if so what would be the best type of screw to use.

I would bolt it on, I wouldn't trust a screw to keep it secure through relatively thin metal. Pre drill the holes the size of the shaft of the bolts, then countersink it to the size of the washer and deep enough to have the bolt head be flush, then pull out the top drawers and bolt it up.
When I got my craftsman box from the previous owner, I put a piece of MDF on top and did just that.
I would put a thin sheet of plywood or something in the middle to have it even with those raised sides and bolt the door on top so you get the most space.

Are you mounting a vise? Yes? Bolt with recessed flat heads and a plate underneath also. No? Any way you like including glue, pop rivets, inserts, or rivnuts.

Another option is to run a router around the top the same depth as the recess so that the top fits down into the recess.
