Lol.....as the title says I think I love ratchets! I bought another one on Thursday, a chrome Cornwell 3/8 fine tooth ratchet. I counted the other day at work, I have 18 ratchets.......so far ;)

Do any of you have a favorite tool that you may have too many of?

I guess it would be ratchets for me too. Idk how many I have at work, but I'm 99% I have more than the other guys (because they don't have a problem. lol) and I'm about to buy two more.

I am with you on the ratchets. I have been collecting them for a few years now. I am not ready to admit it as a problem yet..

As far as having a problem you are a long ways off with only 18 ratchets.

I probably have 60 or 70. I don't use them enough to use every one of them in a year.

For some people it's - shoes, jewelry/watches, clothes, hats, cars, motorcycles, stamps, coins, music/albums/cds/movies, toy trains....

So you (and probably me) have a problem with ratchets (and probably tools also). No big deal in the scheme of things.

I don't think it is a problem to be prepared. There should be nothing wrong with having a hobby or a collection of some sort to pass time. You can always say if a ratchet breaks you will likely have plenty to back it up and not have a lot of down time going to fix it or buy another.

I have a lot of tools that are somewhat the same stuff. A lot of them are used in different applications **** as with an SAE or metric set. Some are combo sets. What can I say? It seems like you can never have enough tools!

Eighteen ratchets doesn't seem like a lot. I have nearly that many. Surely I don't have a problem.

One of the serious collectors on this forum is Powderkeg. This is what he posted a year ago.

Did someone mention my name? A few quick 'n dirty crappy cellphone pics of the 3/8" and 1/4" drawers:

3/8" Action to Mac

3/8" Master Mechanic to Wright
3-8ratchetsMasterMech-Wright12-2014Gal1200_zpsd3203c85.jpg

1/4" and some non-standard lengths
1-4ratchets12-2014Gal1200_zpsdc3f8b6b.jpg

Didn't include pics of any of the standard 1/2" (5 more drawers) or the ones in the roll cab (@ 40 or so).

300 ratchets? I haven't been at 300 ratchets since like 2009 or so :lol_hitti
Current list count across the three drive sizes is 575, with at least 15 or more soaking or needing lube and re-assembly before getting added to the list. That puts me just short of 600, covering around 120 different brands :willy_nil

And without getting too deep in the weeds, those are all USA sourced/stamped ratchets - no overseas or questionable pedigree ratchets need apply. They're also all individual/unique ratchets, not identical multiples of the same exact same brand/model/size/design. And the Big 4 truck brands only account for 7% of the total, with Snappy far ahead at a count of 18 (most picked up over the years as users).

Been saying for a few years now that someday I'm going to work up a post with some good pics and numbers, statistics, etc, but there are always too many ratchets to finish cleaning up first :eyecrazy:

And to the OP - relax, you don't have a problem, you're not even close to starting to have a problem. Once you have to take pics and make lists to remember what ratchets you have, then you're hitting "problem" territory. Until then continue buying ratchets at what rate and need you have - one can (almost) never have too many ratchets!

OP has a nice complete set of ratchets though it's barely a starter set for a lot of members on this site. I have about the same amount or more in my cart and most if not all of Snap On's current offering of comfort handled dual 80's and a few others from different brands (no duplicates) in my toolbox. Why? I dunno. I just like things that ratchet I guess.

The only tool I have multiple duplicates of are hard handled ratcheting screwdrivers and even though they're the "same" tool, none of them are exactly alike. A lot of different colours, editions, etc. last count was over 70 and that's only the regular length ones. I still have a dozen or more I'm still searching for. No different than any other collection I guess. I did catch myself acquiring multiple sets of Snap On screwdrivers but they take up too much room and there's not as many variations as ratcheting screwdrivers so I sold/traded a lot off.

I have a thing for ratchets. I only have 2 I use on a regular basis but somehow some seem to follow me to the toolbox. I think I'm in the 25-30 range not near as bad as some here but a lot for most people.

I don't think you have a ratchet problem.... around here that's what we call "a good start". I'm in the process of paring down my tools right now and it's not easy. Can't say I have one huge over-stocked problem, just several slightly overstocked problems; sockets, hammers, re-threading tools & body tools come to mind.

Congratch-ulations! Welcome to the Intl Brotherhood of Ratchet Collectors!

You're off to a good start. I started with a few and thanks to this group, knew what to buy more of and what to pass up.

Heck, I saw a custom built ratchet that someone else built, he told me how to build one for my own and presto, one new ratchet in the box.

I see one in your picture that I want. So thanks for that. Hahaha..

I agree, wholeheartedly. Thank you for articulating what I'd wanted to share, but probably wouldn't have been able to as eloquently as you did.

I'm curious about the Proto with the obvious label, looks like more than one flex point. Please tell me a little more about it! Thanks

there is only one problem that can arise from collecting ratchets; having more ratchets than sockets. there is only one solution for that, by more sockets :D

i dont have any problems at this point but once i get back to building my shop i'll probably have an issue with storage. i find storage containers and organizers oddly fascinating. in all likelihood, i'll be searching for something to put into a new divided box rather than mixing nuts and bolts together to make more room:lol_hitti

That red (orange?) handles Proto ratchet with the rotating head on it... is that ratchet any good?

I ask because I found one, but idk if it's something I want to buy or not. Or how much I'd be willing to pay for it. But if it's a good quality ratchet, I might as well add it to the lot.

It's a Proto 5257FL, indexing flex head. Indexing is locking but the flex is ball and detent. Was a NOS flea market find. When I first saw it I thought it was a little gimmicky, but I trust the Proto name so I bought it. Don't use it often but it has come in handy a time or two, enough that I'll keep it in the line up

KM223,

Hey that Super Lube tube in the corner- is that what you use in the Snap-on Dual 80? I'm just wondering because on new Dual 80s I have had them slip a little until I take them apart and wipe a small amount of that thick clear stuff off the gear the factory puts on.

You only have a problem if someone else points it out. Else, it's perfectly normal.

For the record, I have a problem with all of these, and more. I know this because SWMBO has told me so.
