Yeah the last time I went into sears to turn in 2 different ratchets, they straight up told me that they don't give out new ones and they now rebuild them. Well I said ok and the guy "rebuilt" them and both of them still skipped teeth just as bad as before, but they still told me they couldnt replace them. That's really ****** Customer service if you ask me. Thats why I didn't bother to buy a new one and went with SO and Mac instead. At least i know if something goes wrong it'll get fixed and if for some reason it doesn't I'll get a new one without having to fight for it.

Should have elevated your complaint to Sears corporate. Sear internal guidance for ratchet warranty is to give a new one to the customer if a repair/refurbished ratchet is not to your satisfaction.

To many of these Sears stores play by their own made up rules and sometimes have to be put in their place by **** rolling down hill from Sears corporate. I have done it more than once and really is not all that difficult to do.

Yea we got a couple of them at my sears If you want you can send them to me and I can switch em out for you. Just gotta pay shipping. If you send them into corporate they are going to send you back whatever is close to the original.

I offer rebuilt all the time in my opinion the rebuilt ones are way better than the new ones. But if they dont want a rebuilt one I will give them a new one no big deal

they have them in store. typically they do not want to sell them to you, but you can talk them into it 9 out of 10 times. find the right associate to talk to, someone who seems knowledgeable.

i have rebuilds put away for all my craftsman ratchets, and put 84t premium kits in my 60t gearwrench ratchets also. ask for them one at a time, and they will usually give em up. penny each :rocker:

You put 84T kits in Gearwrench ratchets? Which models if you don't mind and was it worth the change? Seems like 60 and 84 would feel/work about the same but I'm curious.

EDIT: I have my info, please ignore this message. This was getting off the original topic anyhow.

I have some questions about some of my ratchets. Is here a place you can look online to I'd a age, make model of a tool? And which are the best?

Based on a reply earlier in this thread the answer is no. You can however exchange a ratchet and ask for an older rebuilt model. Maybe even buy a new model and exchange it for an older one though probably not in a single visit. I would like to buy a few of the newer models and take them back later as they get the older models in their bin.

I have a 1/2" drive set (fine tooth ratchet, extensions, sockets) that were made in Taiwan. I believe they tried it in the late 80s/early 90s. Too much opposition so they kept production here. Some wrenches were made in Japan as well.

At my sears if they don't have rebuild kits for that ratchet, you get a new asian-manufactured one. Then they throw the broken ratchet into a box under the counter. I've tried purchasing the box, but they said it's very against the rules there.

Same here....

Good insider info. All of my sears exchange experiences have been positive. I took back 12 screwdrivers 2 ratchets and a couple sockets at one time. Kid seen what I had, told me get the replacements and he would ring up the exchange. Hell he never even counted or matched up what I had to the replacements I brought up. I was very surprised by how hassle free it was

I applaud your work ethic and passion. Just wish my local Sears tool employees had those.
And I think it is a crying shame - as well as financially ignorant - to take vintage old tools and melt them down rather than sell them to collectors. They'd MAKE money selling them, rather than costing money to melt them and maybe make 50 cents a pound for scrap.

Anyone have any stories lately?

Went to my local Sears store (Silverdale, WA) recently to exchange a stripped Phillips screwdriver AND see if their toolboxes really were as bad as everyone here claims. (They were, maybe worse)

Sears didn't have a single 6" #2 Phillips screwdriver in stock! Had to ship me a replacement instead, I turned over one of the old chrome finish red and blue ones and three weeks later rec'd a Chinese POS with a squirmy rubber handle, black oxide finish. Looks like something made for Harbor Freight but branded for Sears. And, now I don't have the one that matches the rest of my Craftsman stuff to exchange!

As for the store visit: the only thing worse than the quality of the tool storage was the customer service. I was in the store for almost an hour, never did encounter an employee while looking at toolboxes, only got help when I stood in line at the register for 15 minutes with the screwdriver in my hand after scouring the store for a replacement on my own.....

No wonder this company is circling the drain.

FWIW, I see ACE is now selling Craftsman tools- anyone want to wager that's who ends up with the brand when Fast Eddie Lampert's Sears Holdings fire sale is over?

The corporate bean counters are pathetic. They nickel and dime everything to the point where the quality goes to hell and then they wonder why people don't want to buy their products anymore? Then when they lose enough customers, they will sell off the once great name.

You can't compete with Wally World on Chinese made tools, so why even try to race towards the bottom of quality and prices? Go the other way -- back to quality. If I had been in charge of Sears Craftsman, I'd have 2 lines of tools by now -- a line for professionals that is as good an Snap-On and Mac and sold on trucks (with weekly payment plans available) stocked at the local Sears stores or available at the stores of course for walk in sales. And a line about half as expensive for the home users. Imagine the profit that a local Sears could make if it had a couple of trucks visiting the hundreds of shops and factories in that territory?

Yeah well Im trying to help a lot of these kids out Im 20 years old and I know a lot about tools some of these kids have never touched a socket to a bolt before I just want to teach as many people the art of tool sales so Its less work on my part and its gets respect they all respect me give up sales to me

Here is an analogy, by a mechanic.....Information is like a tool, when someone asks to borrow either tell them to eat $h1t or give out your rusty wrench. Keep that good stuff to yourself you earned it.

Coach

He wanted to get the tools for essentially nothing. He was trying to get the real craftsman at the evolve price saying that they were the same thing and that we should sell it for that price. I argued with him for 20 mins and finally just laughed it off and walked away

I had an old friend who worked in Sears tool department probably ten years ago. He told me a guy once came in with a whole big Craftsman socket set in the black case. They were all rusted up from sitting in the trunk of his car and he wanted to warranty the whole set all at once. It just sounds too funny.
My friend told him sorry it doesn't work that way. Wish I could have witnessed that interaction.
