So HF has a coupon right now that says 15% (20% for ITC members) off any decorative or work lighting products. In the exclusions section of the coupon, it says it excludes Roadshock lights. That's it.

Anyway, I went in last night and picked up one of these Icon lights and tried to use the coupon. For some reason I had a feeling this icon light wouldn't ring up with the discount. I was correct and the cashier said "something's wrong..." The manager came over and immediately she said oh that's because it's Icon. But she opened the coupon binder and studied the coupon. Sure enough, Icon lights were not listed in the exclusions.

Anyway, she manually punched in the 20% discount and I walked out with the light (and a couple other things I needed).

Fortunately, all of this transpired without me saying a word. It's not like I had to argue with her (and I wouldn't have). So I say all this because the light is actually really cool and I think it's going to be very useful but it's pretty new so it's not likely to go on sale any time soon. Exploiting this "loophole" that is really not a loophole may be your best bet if you are interested in one but don't want to pay full price.

yeah. I tried to use that coupon on the new Icon light with different results. The dude in charge showed me on his phone that If you click on the coupon on Harbor Freight's website, it will show a bunch of different lights that the coupon works on. Unfortunately, the new Icon light isn't one of them. The store said no to the coupon so, I said no thanks to the light. I'll wait for a different coupon. It looks like a decent light though.

Weird.

Here's the coupon. I wouldn't even know how to begin to produce that result.

2 Things that ***** with the light.

1. This one is so ******** annoying. It bends the wrong way, when you are using it under the car, you can't get the light pointed at what you need, its reversed vs their old style lights. They need to sell another version for people that actually use it for working on cars. It's so bad I will still use the old ones.

2. It gets really hot at max setting.

The Icon can fold to a smaller overall profile for storage, but I would buy the Astro 52SL over the Icon. In fact, I've got 2 of them already.

The Astro is around the same price and far more versatile, also has the option for wireless charging if you want it.

Pretty much exactly what happened with me.

If there's an exclusion, it will be listed on the coupon. Icon lights were not listed, but the coupon scanned as "invalid". The clerk called a manager, and he was able to override and give me the 15% discount for $6 off. ("Inside Track Club" members got 20% off.)

It's true that Icon stuff (and other HF "brands") is almost always excluded from discounts, but it was not excluded on this coupon. I don't really GAF if it was supposed to be excluded or someone at corporate screwed up or whatever. Not my problem. But they handled it correctly in the store.

For the record, if anyone at HF is watching, I would never have bought it at full price. I have lots of lights... I know discounts on Icon stuff are rare, so I jumped on this one.

I also note that some stores in Indy were out of these; the brand-new store near my house had several on the shelf. It would seem they're selling well.

Anyway, the light is pretty great so far. Very sturdy, much sturdier than the "Braun" light -- I've had three of the Braun stick lights, and one is completely dead due to fluid damage, and currently the other two are only sort of working.

Yes, the geometry of the Icon light is different, so you use it a little differently; I don't see the problem here.

Upsides compared to the Braun stick lights are that it should be a LOT more durable, it's fluid-resistant (antifreeze killed one of my Brauns) and has a charge indicator. The quantity and quality of the light is a lot better, you can choose light levels, and it folds down more compactly. The button and charge port covers are far more durable and useful.

The Brauns are just plain inconvenient and awkward to store or transport, and the button was far too easy to accidentally activate and run down the battery if anything slightly brushed against it. The charge port covers lasted about five minutes, and the charge ports on all mine stopped working after a while.

I think the biggest downside is that you can't just unscrew the end and pop in a charged or higher capacity 18650 battery.

Most "stick" lights do not fold completely, so they share that awkwardness and are more subject to damage and wear on the hinge. The Icon's design should prove more durable, and it's certainly a lot more compact (but still usable and useful) when folded.

This is my biggest complaint. I like that it folds into a pocket sized shape and like the power indicator. The big light is on the wrong side for me and I have a hard time getting it where I want compared to the Braun lights.
Speaking of Braun lights are they discontinuing the single joint for the double joint? I really do not like the double joint, more parts to wear out and fail. The single joint ones get floppy with use as it is.

I have the new Braun version. I swapped out the battery with a 3500 mah battery. This video is pretty good for some comparison Braun & Icon video. The newer Braun does every thing I need it to do.

Lights = ASTRO End of story.

Lights that don't include batteries that can be easily swapped out = end of story for me. Do any of the current Astro offerings allow the batteries to be easily swapped?
I have one of the early Astro lights and almost never use it because it's sealed. So, when it dies, stop working? Buy 6 of them to always have spares ready to go? I bought a couple of the original Brauns and while they are definitely nowhere near as durable looking as the Astro I have, at least I can change the Braun's batteries in a few seconds. I realize that the sealed cases have advantages, but for me this doesn't win out over actually being able to have a few lights and change batteries as needed. I haven't actually timed it, but with 18650s, it seems like if you get 4 hours of light, it takes 6+ hours to fully recharge one.

I have it and use it a lot. Nice and bright, good color temp and strong magnet.

I really wish it had swappable batteries, but other than that, I've been happy with it. It got smacked around a bit during the suspension replacement of the family Mazda and held up fine.

I second these comments. I was excited to try this light until I got it out of the package and realized the head doesn't rotate all the way around. It has lights on both sides, but it's almost certain that you'll have to swap from one light source to another as the bend stops right in the sweet spot of using the light from one side. This involves pressing the button several times as there are different light levels for each side, and a light on the tip. It's annoying to use, which means it doesn't get used. I was also disappointed in the battery life. It was touted as having much more life than the original Braun lights. I found no improvement over the original Braun. I have the new double jointed Braun light, and it's great. So much easier to maneuver around how you need it without fumbling around trying to get the proper light to illuminate based on the limitations of the head.

I agree, having the larger, brighter LEDs on the other side would be better, but the build quality of the Icon over the Braun is what made my decision. The Icon light is a premium product.

So I'm considering one of these at the current $25 price tag.... I've had two of the Braun ones and they developed a connection issue at the folding point that eventually made them useless.

Hoping maybe @2ndGearRubber has an opinion on these...? Since there seems to be a bit of split and I don't believe I've ever really disagreed with the guy.

If I find one I love I'll be buying like 6 or more so that's why it's worth the extra thought here.

Astro 52sl looks very interesting.

I highly recommend the Astro. I have two of them. My only complaint is the swivel joint loosened on one of them, but otherwise they still work like new.

Been watching Eric 'O use them for years. Rainman Ray also. They're popular.

I have the Icon 800-lumen stick light as well as their puck light. I like the Icon puck light I got at the same time far more.

I mean, it puts out good light (both color and brightness), the magnet is nice and strong and it has survived a couple drops I thought would kill it. But the controls aren't great. I don't really see it as 'backwards' since I hadn't used that style before.

For the current $25, I guess it isn't a bad option, and if mine had been lost or stolen I'd at least think about replacing it for that money. For the regular price, or even $30, I'm not sure...

old thread but bought one and trying to find a charger that works with it. Plugging it into a computer USB the charging lights don't come on nor when I use a Google 30 watt charger. I don't want to burn up my computer USB - they really were not meant for charging batteries. The instructions say to plug the included charger into 120V AC then the flashlight but there is no included charger. I am thinking of taking it back.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
To prevent serious injury, FIRE, and EXPLOSION:

1. Keep dry.

2. Only use included charging adaptors. Other adaptors may damage tool or cause fire.

Charging Instructions

NOTE: Before using Light for the first time, fully charge the Battery.

1. Plug Adaptor into Charging Jack

2. Plug Adaptor into a grounded 120VAC outlet.

3. The Charge Indicator on Adaptor will turn Red during charging. When charging is done, it will turn Green. Unplug the Adaptor.

I found a generic 15 year old 1 amp USB adapter that would charge it. The computer USB port and the Google 30 watt charger would not. I sent Harbor Freight an e-mail telling them to either provide the chargers that the instructions mention or update the instructions. The number of threads out there with this same question are plentiful, and many people take them back for that reason.

The ICON light doesnt have Quick-Charge or even charge protocols programmed onto the board, so it's not going to charge from anything that's high power USB-C to USB-C or data ports like a computer. You'll need a USB-A to USB-C cable and wall adapter like most dumb devices.

The fact that their instructions dont know that or even that it doesnt come with an adapter is telling though of the type of individuals in charge of overseeing these products.

I don't have any of these lights, but what are you talking about? I don't understand why you're trying to plug the light into your computer.

Most modern power strips have USB ports built in. You can also buy USB wall adapters literally anywhere including HF.

I always have a handful of USB wall adapters from old cell phones or devices I don't have any more. I literally have a bag of them for all of my lights.

Just plug the USB cable into the adapter and plug the adapter into a wall outlet or power strip.

I haven't tried the Icon one but on a whim, I bought one of these off brand ones from Amazon.

So far I really like it.
Dropped it a couple times and at least for now it's hanging in there.

FWIW, it's the same shade green as Snap-On's green...lol

HF is blowing these out one day only for $19.99. And a cool mod for those that would prefer to change the light and it also shows that you can change the battery if you really want to.

I bought one today but had to go to two different stores to get it. First one was sold out.

I picked one up yesterday. My local HF had at least 40 available in all 4 colors. This unit is significantly better than a smaller but similar type light I bought from Amazon last week for $16.00. So at $20, this was definitely worth it.
