That's exactly what I did. Problem is those kits are beat to **** and they charge the full retail price of kits.

They refund the money when you return the tool, or you keep the tool. I also worked at AutoZone too.

I rather have my own kit. Then again it's been 6 months since I touched a car. Not exactly high up on the priority list.

Another reason to buy a kit. As you said, you don't know if you'll get a greasy, beat up, and incomplete kit when you arrive to rent it.

Most of them were exactly in that condition when I worked there and the few times I've had to otherwise handle a kit.
We only got new kits after they were not returned and considered "out of stock".

Sometimes the used kit would be returned later, but I always hung onto the new kit in case the other kit was too far damaged or missing parts and unable to be rented, or when someone came in and wanted to buy a new kit. But we only had a few new kits at any given time.

It has a hex end, not on the screw itself, but should still work

That hex does not turn the rod at all, so it's useless for turning the piston back in. The second tool you listed is not even for the style of calipers, they only do normal push in pistons.
