I don't think I have EVER seen SPAM on here, and to ward off the smart asses like myself I don't mean the kind you eat.:bounce:

Well ya but the REPORT button and then you he blank Response box appears and you are conditioned to type...something...... If that's wrong then ya shouldn't get the empty response box. How about something that says....?...oh let me get crazy here...."That you for reporting spam"! I know this sounds totally crazy, but just an idea.....maybe it's me......

I guess I'm an idiot too then. I am up in the wee hours of the morning and I quietly respond with the word spam in a post so that the moderators can spot it. Is this the wrong way?

I suppose rather than calling someone an idiot, a sticky or some form of letting people know would be great, HEY!

I do not respond IN THE THREAD... I respond in the REPORT comment. When you hit the "REPORT" button... a comment box comes up... that is where you say what's up.

That is not the issue being talked about here...

What you should never do... is add a response IN the thread...

The reason is two fold...

1. it makes it stay on top of active threads
2. the mods don't see it... unless they open the thread

They are however notified behind the scenes when you select that "Report" button.

As discussed by PelicanPines, it's not wrong, it's ok to use the "report message" box... as per lg's provided link:

The golden rules here on the GJ.

1, Report all spammers. If the spammer has multiple posts just report the one post and state multiple spam posts by this spammer in your report message. (otherwise you will be forever sending reports).

What do you think the mods do about a member with two user names?
not much, probably the same allowances for paid members having politics interjections. haha
But in other forums the 'sockpuppets' accounts usually get deleted the other insta-banned.

Regular member and Alliance members have to follow the same rules with one exception and that's the 100 post rule for Classified/Wanted Ads.

So, yes, even Alliance members can get banned.

For a nation that harps on more than anyone else about freedom, you sure get your knickers in a twist over some pretty trivial insignignificant little "rules".

Re-read what you have written... it makes perfect sense to question trivial insignificant rules if freedom is a priority.

However, freedom doesn't mean squat on an internet forum.. especially for members that are not even paying customers. It's Ryan's playground... he makes the rules.

YOU SHOULD NOT:
1. Reply to the post in any way. Don't reply with a cute comment. Don't reply with "reported." Etc... Just don't reply to spam posts. That's what they want you to do.
Fine. Forum rules are what they are.

I think this policy is a mistake. A single response, "Reported" saves everyone else from having to do anything--they know it's already handled. If that post is done while the spam is still fresh, it doesn't bump the spam very far up the forum. A single "Reported" post is not merely harmless, it's actually useful.

But I don't run this place.

Thanks for this topic. I am getting tired of warning members the links are not safe and some even contain Trojans sent to attack your computer. Remember YOU are the target of SPAMMERS.

Dealt with today.

Plenty of room.

The report button also allows you to report other posts that may break the rules and not just SPAM.

A reply keeps the SPAM post at the top of the page. Just what the spammer wants as the links will be looked at and perhaps if you look at any of the links you will find you have a trojan on your computer.

A report is instant and notifies a suspect post that needs to be dealt with.

The policy is not a mistake when you know how the system works.

Very well stated Pelican .

If the post is reported and has no replies then more often we see it and it is dealt with much faster.

The report button works well, being in an opposing time zone to most members here I can see some spam come up that users in the U.S. may not see. Hit 'report' simply type in "looks like spam" and check back later. The offending post is usually dealt with by the mods quick smart with a banned "user" as the result and sometimes a complete deletion and disappearance of their user name and account. Same applies to aggressive or abusive members.
The system works well, I don't understand why experienced members try to challenge it. :eyecrazy: :headscrat

Thanks Rocketgpw. When you see it like I do you can often not see a spam post due to the replies. Some of the Mods can pick a spammer by the weird name or the IP location. Also another reason why we now have two moderators in Australia due to the time zones and this being such a global forum.

Just remember the Mods on this forum are just here as we enjoy this place like the other members and all we want is to see this place run safely. If you see SPAM report it as per the rules as you are not only helping yourself and the Mods but you are also helping the Admin of the forum keep track as to what is required so this forum runs smoothly.

Maybe they think it's part of the gang initiation to gain admittance to the Dark Web...:dunno:

I had a week recently when a Trojan slowed my work almost to a stop. Sadly I must have mistakenly  clicked on a spam link here when dealing with a spammer.

Respond to spam: one week ban. Simple.
Simple...also silly.

If that post is done while the spam is still fresh, it doesn't bump the spam very far up the forum.
A reply keeps the SPAM post at the top of the page.
If it's fresh enough to already be at or near the top of the page, what harm was done?

The policy is not a mistake when you know how the system works.
Clearly, I do not know how the system works.

I look at forum rules this way...

Don't bother second guessing why something is the way it is... considering the rule makers have been doing this a lot longer than "we" have been thinking about why the rule shouldn't exist.

When rules are overridden with a complex "if then else" statement of acceptable responses ... its just freaking easier to say... DON"T DO THAT... DO THIS.

All that said... we only live here... someone else owns the space and I consider the mods... kinda like "house keeping"... with the report button... kinda like putting the "Make Up This ROOM" tag on the door.

A temp ban on some one that replies to spam would not be fair. In some cases you do not know it is SPAM but in the recent posts the SPAM is obvious.

The harm done is it takes on the look that the topic has no issues but if it slips down a little with an odd subject name and no replies it makes it easier to find and by that time hopefully many of you have hit report and tagged it as spam.

Clearly, I do not know how the system works.

Well hopefully this topic will teach many of you. :)

Good lord. Some of you are a little over the top. Responding to SPAM posts shouldn't be done - but it's not the end of the world. Certainly not something to get upset about or start banning people over.

Didn't I read some time in the past that responses to a spam post had to be deleted before the spam could causing more work for the moderator to get things straight?

Why don't we just have a policy that a new member can't post a thread containing a link? Maybe like a 10-post / 1 week wait before you can post links? It's obviously still able to be thwarted, but it would cut down on the "drive by" spam blasts.
