I've lurked on here for a few years and have dreamed of building a shop.

My wife and I moved to her home state of MN last year and purchased a foreclosure on 4 acres and are finally getting started on remodel and shop build.

We got our building permit on Monday and the crew started digging on Tuesday.

Elevation

Floorplan

After cutting a few trees to clear the spot.

They had to bring in about 100 yds of fill.

Formed up to pour the monolithic slab.

So I am curious if that's a "frost protected shallow foundation" that's going to be perimeter insulated to prevent heave?

Other than that, good to elevate as you did on what I think is a pretty flat site.

My recommendation is for a vapor barrier, 6 mil minimum, which I don't see in the pics.

Welcome to the Northland, I'm sure you'll get used to the sub zero weather soon enough!

I am surprised that they didn't put any vapor barrier and then insulation in top of that.

I just got done building my house in northern Wisconsin, they did the same type of foundation (perimeter footing... Not a technical term) I guess it's found to be just as structurally sound and cheaper than traditional footings.

Looking forward to watch your shop go up!

Thanks guys.

I know the vapor barrier isn't required by code, but I asked my builder about his thoughts on using one.

I have no intention of using a epoxy floor coating in the shop so I didn't think anything of it when they didn't put one down. I have a few days before that slab is poured so I have time to get one in though.

Dave, as you're in MN, I'd strongly consider insulating the slab, even if there is no radiant going in. It will make a big difference if you plan on heating the shop! You'll also see less condensation on the surface on those humid summer days...

A 32 x 38 is pretty much my dream shop :)

Slow progress on the shed, since they are also doing a big remodel on the house.

but the shed floor was poured this morning. Should start framing sometime next week.

The house started like this

and now we are here (Back of house with the new foundation for the addition.

Hope to be moved in sometime in July.

Been a couple of weeks without an update.

The builder has been going pretty strong on the house.

Getting shingles tomorrow and as long as the plumbing and electrical inspection go well tomorrow. Insulation Friday and they will be hanging sheet rock next week.

Yesterday they got the walls framed up on the shop also. This morning they were getting ready to place the trusses.

Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it all come together. What are your plans for heating the garage? I see you've just insulated the office right now, are you only planning on heating that area?

Thanks, Yeah I work from home so I needed the office done right away. Its getting baseboard heat and a window unit for now. The garage is getting plumbed for a gas line, and will get a hanging gas heater. I hope to get it insulated by the end of the year. The ceiling tin is going up next week with a vapor barrier and baffles so it will be ready for blown in insulation in the attic.

Had to make a few concessions to keep the home remodel on track.

The Sheetrock was delivered today for the shop and the house. The builders also started prepping the front for the stone facade.

Nice build! Show us the house as well as it moves along. Are you running electrical and cat 5 from the house? Be a great time while the walls are open.

A few people have asked about the house. It was a complete wreck when we bought it, full of trash and had been neglected for a while. The price was right so actullay planned on tearing it down and starting over but once the trash was gone and we had it down to the studs the "bones" were in good shape.

So we added 20x26 addition and a a 3/4 bath for the master.

The walls and rim joist areas have been insulated with spray foam

and the house is wrapped ready for the siding to go on as soon as the last couple of windows arrive.

Really amazing to salvage the house and have it be a gem when done. Huge congrats on the whole project. I concur with the others, keep the house updates included.

Thanks it's taken us a while to get to this point.

Met with the electrician this morning and walked through the outlets and switches and lights for the shop.

They are running a 100 amp service from the house, and will be burying a 1 inch poly pipe so I can run data and cable when I choose.

They did get the service door installed and started the stone work. We had rain and storms moving through the area today.

Nice build BD. I really dig the Mopars.

I really wanted to build a 40 x 50 but my wife wasn't going for a shop that was bigger than the house.

Dave, we ran with the 2 to 1 theory. House 1500 square feet, shop 3000 square feet. Although if I had not showed the wife "HER" storage room, I would have had to downsize to 40 x 50. Great project, keep the pictures coming.

Thanks, I plan on getting the gravel in as soon as the work and final grading are done. Should have machinery coming in the next couple of weeks to cleanout and replace the well pump and put in the new septic system.

That is really nice.
Really like the way the two match so well. Good that you were able to get roofing, siding and brick laid all at once to match so well.
House is coming along nicely and the shop looks better every post you make.
