Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy a set of 3/8" impact sockets and use a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter with my 1/2" impact? The 3/8" sockets are cheaper. Thanks.

And also the length you're adding to the set... Usually not a problem, but it might be sometime

I tend to use larger sizes that would not be available in a 3/8" drive set for most impact use like lug nuts, suspension, etc. Also the 3/8" sockets and especially the adapter will likely not hold up to as much torque as just using a 1/2" drive socket.

1/2" drive impact sockets will put up with substantially more torque, for a much longer time than 3/8" drive sockets. Further, you lose torque when using a drive size adapter with an impact wrench. You want to minimize the number of pieces between the socket and the wrench to maximize actual torque applied to the fastener. This is why I typically recommend that folks get deep wall impact sockets first, because they'll reach places where you might otherwise need a short extension with shallow sockets.

What's the point of this question?

Its like saying why don't I buy 3/8 chrome sockets because I alrady have a 1/2 ratchet. All of the same reasons apply: ultimate strength, flex/torque efficiency, compactness. And in extremis, safety...

Also a set of cheap impacts is like $20 at wall mart...how much you plan on saving?

:+1:

On the lost torque statement, it's kind of mind blowing until you experience it first hand. Also, most 3/8 sets only got to 19mm, if you're doing much automotive work, you'll need up to at least 22mm or 24mm.
