Can anyone tell me about this milling machine?

Pros and cons?

It's 110v so that's appealing to me

The company is still in buisness and even has some spare parts for it. Nice compact home milling machine. My friend who owns one likes it a lot. Tend to sell quickly. I used their later larger mills (bigger than a Bridgeport) and they also work great.

Index mills are well regarded machines, I second the "they sell quickly" comment.

Great company. Been in a few different locations here in Michigan. Yours was probably made at their old Jackson, Michigan facility. Give them a call. Hopefully you can read the old serial plate. They are pretty good about supporting their older tools.

The Model 40 was an early smaller mill. It is great for doing light work in a home shop use if you have limited space, and can’t fit a full size Index or Bridgeport. This one bridges the gap between the full size machines and the import mill/drills. Not as ridged as a large machine and more prone to chatter, but it is still a HUGE step up from the mill/drills!

Nice find!

I've had one for years, they are a perty stout machine. There are a couple of different versions and some options on them. Ifyou want some details on mine you can review this thread, https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/index-40-mill-dro-install.273996/#post-6497867 Where I detail the installation of a DRO on mine. Also if you do a search on index and my user name you can find a few more posts here that I have chimed in on. One thing that is lacking on them is a drop spindle that makes power tapping imposible with the tap chucked in the spindle.

I did send my spindle into Wells-Index to have it reground to R-8 from the B&S taper that was factory.
